UPDATE:
Looks like Venus and Serena are missing the French Open.
Yea she is not going to play FO.

'When asked by a fan on Twitter "is there any hope in seeing your girls at the French Open," Oracene replied: "No hope."'

..

@BritishTennis just tweeted this
AEGON International (Eastbourne): Venus Williams joins 13 top 20 players in the women's main draw at Devonshire Park: http://bit.ly/mbA7ks

http://www.lta.org.uk/NewWebsite/LTA/Images/Photos/People/Players/Players%20-%20Known/Williams,%20Venus/2010-venus-wim-620x300-getty.jpg
Former world number one, Venus Williams, has entered the AEGON International this year.

The five-time Wimbledon women’s singles champion is one of 13 of the world’s top 20 players who have entered the tournament at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.

Williams is joined by French Open champions Francesca Schiavone and Ana Ivanovic. This year’s Australian Open finalist Na Li is also in the Main Draw alongside Victoria Azarenka.

Last year’s French Open finalist, Sam Stosur, has also entered the AEGON International. The Australian competed last year and made the semi-finals before losing to eventual winner Russian Ekaterina Makarova.

She commented: “I am so excited to be returning to Eastbourne to compete at the AEGON International. I had a great run there last year and am hopeful of going even further this year.”

Gavin Fletcher, AEGON International Tournament Director said: “We promised to deliver world class tennis to Eastbourne, so to attract thirteen of the world’s top twenty, and five of the world’s top ten, is a real coup for the tournament. I think it’s fantastic that Venus has entered this year as it promises to be another thrilling week of high class women’s tennis.”

The AEGON International runs from June 11-18 2011 at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne.

I'm tempted to reserve tickets but I'd only really want to go on days 1 or 2 (I'm a student; I'm broke). With doing that, I obviously wouldn't be able to guarantee seeing her because first round is split over two days. I'm thinking that more ladies' singles matches are played on day 2, plus she tends to ask for late starts in tournaments anyway...(?)

Ugh.

The recents champions at Eastbourne have been...weak, to say the least. :x Radwanska, Wozniacki, Makarova, not bad players but the winner's list was much better in the past.

but I would not expect Venus to go very far in Eastbourne with Wimbledon approaching next. Still, good for the tournament. Would Kim play here too?

Probably in her best interest. She's played far too much tennis before Wimby the last two seasons by her standards IMO and jeopardized her chances on the grass.

I doubt she'll ever play RG again. She's finally conceded that she's never going to win it, and now rightly realises that all her energies should be going the only slam she has realistic chances of winning these days.

Still, it's a bit of a shame considering that she's never missed RG throughout her career, unless I'm mistaken.

Uranium

^You're right about not missing Roland Garros. But I have a problem with the only slam with realistic chance comment. She has shown even last year she is more than capable of taking another US Open title. Wimbledon and US Open she still has chances and now that she skipped the first half of the season she'll be nice and fresh for both. Who knows what will happen.

Still, it's a bit of a shame considering that she's never missed RG throughout her career, unless I'm mistaken.

I think the last couple of clay-seasons have been taxing for her, and ultimately have been fruitless at RG. She came into Wimbledon lame in '09, and possibly '10 too, hence the lay-off afterwards. I think the demands of clay are getting far too great for her now. She's almost 31, injury prone at the best of the times and has to strategize now to try and preserve her career as long as possible, starting with a healthy Wimbledon campaign.

I agree, it would be a bit of a shame if she were to miss it permanently, has never missed it and has some legitimate chances to win ('02, '04), but has just never been able to translate her best tennis there.

^You're right about not missing Roland Garros. But I have a problem with the only slam with realistic chance comment. The USO is still attainable, but i don't count her as a heavy favourite there anymore, particularly at this stage in her career. Hardcourts present a very challenging task for the body, and i don't know how well Venus can preserve herself physically for that particular Slam. Game-wise, i don't know well she emphasises her strengths on that surface anymore either. Wimbledon is still the golden-ticket as far as she's concerned IMO.

Direwolf

Hopefully she'll be there?
I dont know what the real "PRESENCE" in this context actually mean.

ROLANDA GARROS is a Grand Slam
she will never miss a SLAM she is 55% injured.

Venus really loves playing clay.
She loves Roland Garros even though the organizers/director/weather/surface doesnt like her as much.

Hardcourts present a very challenging task for the body, and i don't know how well Venus can preserve herself physically for that particular Slam.
Im quite impress that you know more about Venus than herself.
If Venus is not up for the challenge she would have retired already.
Venus always give her all, may it be MM-exho-SLAM.

WOW, I also have a stron feeling she is skipping the clay season. She has never missed RG, what a shame. I miss having her on tour.

On the other hand; playing Eastboune means she wants matches before coming to Wimbledon fresher and having grass court practice. I hope she capitalises on this chance cause realistically speaking, I don't think Serena will be the 100% Wimbledon Championship form, so Venus has a better chance seeing her injury is not as serious.

What the hell is with everyone? I'm just happy to see her back, whenever that may be. She probably won't be ready for RG and since she doesn't want to just go into Wimbledon without any tournaments under her belt, she entered Eastbourne. What's the problem?

Uranium
May 8th, 2011, 02:57 AM
Venus is being smart. Clay is too big of an ask for her fragile body. The long rallies are not good for her fragile body. Especially since she becomes a pusher at Roland Garros. And to only come back for those 2 events? Smart of Venus to just be smart and not risk injury right before her precious Wimbledon. Eastbourne gives her the chance to get some match play and then Wimbledon she can go through the early rounds continuing to find form.

Of course, her coming back for the clay would be nice, she can get better match practice. Long rallies and more hitting to find rhythm. BUT clay is very physical in that same sense. Her body has been fragile and she is being smart to not risk injury before Wimbledon. Her focus is Wimbledon. She is not going to come back for Brussels and Roland Garros, playing on clay for only 2 weeks, just to then have to switch surfaces to grass. It is just wiser to skip it, focus on grass and focus on Wimbledon. Her best chance at a slam, focus everything to there.

justineheninfan

This is insane. She plays Eastbourne instead of RG.

She probably would pick up more points at Eastborne than RG.

I understand the decision. Does anyone seriously think she has a prayer to ever win RG at this point of her career, let alone this year. Why push yourself to get ready to play a slam after a long layoff you will probably lose 3rd round at anyway. I guess the only benefit is maybe hitting alot of shots and getting in some rallies would be good preperation for grass, but that isnt how she will play at Wimbledon anyhow, so warm up grass event is better.

yet sharapova still turns up... anyways...HER decision is more than likely based on what is best for her HEALTH rather than some notion that she can't win...I'm quite sure she never steps on court thinking she can't win unless it's a situation like in austrailia where she's clearly hampered. venus may be a lot of things but she's never a doubter in her own beliefs...

I doubt she really gives a damn about Roland Garros. Sure, she'd like to add that title to her resume, but she's not enthused to adapt or change anything about her game to win the title, since it's her aim to win Wimbledon as many times as she can.

It's whatever will be will be with her at RG, but Wimbledon she wants.

The Dawntreader
May 8th, 2011, 04:33 PM
Wimbledon is the ultimate now. It isn't really surprising to me, given her investment and success in that tournament. Reminds me of Navratilova in 1990, who skipped RG in order to fully prepare physically and game-wise for Wimbledon.

It'd only cause her body harm to play Brussels, RG, Eastbourne, Wimbledon in a row. She's doing everything necessary to prolong her career.
