ROME -- Kim Clijsters has withdrawn from the Italian Open as she recovers from an injured ankle, putting her readiness for the French Open in doubt.

The Rome tournament starts Sunday and is an important warm-up for the season's second Grand Slam, which begins May 22.

The second-ranked Clijsters hurt herself at a wedding party last month. She hasn't played since losing to Victoria Azarenka in the Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinals in Florida in March.

Third-ranked Vera Zvonareva did not enter the Rome tournament, and No. 16 Venus Williams has also withdrawn with a hip injury that has kept her out since January.

Serena Williams, who has been out since July after two foot operations and then blood clots in her lung, is also expected to withdraw.

Now only 95 more top 100 players have to withdraw, so JJ has a 16% chance to win the Italian Open. :awww:

I don't think it's necessarily news-worthy since no one really epected her to be ready by then anyway,,,?

No one's loss

There are only 2 current GS champions actively playing and one can't be arsed to play. I think it's a real loss for the WTA and tennis fans.

Even if Clijsters was playing she wouldn't put in much effort and you know it.

Even if Clijsters was playing she wouldn't put in much effortThat's still more effort than Venus and Serena put in all of their arranged-result matchups :wavey:

Kim Clijsters had her first practice yesterday. No reaction from the ankle. Still a lot of work to do. Will play no tournament before RG.

well if she has started practicing if confident she will be at RG. i guess she will use her early rounds at the french for shaking the rust and getting her game together. she might be vunerable early at the french, but if she makes the 4th round i would think she is there to win it.

Serves her right for doing that to Ana.

Did you even think before saying that!?

Gosh I can see why other fan bases will single out some of the Ana fans and make generalizations. That has NOTHING to do with Kim getting injured. Ana should have just made sure she didn't choke away a 5-1 (?) lead.

If getting injured was Karma for beating Ana then half the tour would be injured.
