A hot mess.

Considering Dinara gave Julia FOUR GAMES worth of DFs, and could barely find the court half the time, Julia made that ridiculously difficult. Mind you, is she ill or something??

She aint beating Woz like that.

Julia actually looked a bit tired. Only saw from 3-2 in the third set, some good strokes as usual, I hope she'll be able to play well against Caro, the scheduling is just crazy with her having to play today while Caro had her match yesterday :( anyway good luck.

113 ue's in this match! Nobody wanted to win it at some point. Goerges should have taken it in 2 though.

Why, why, why... Julia... why make a match who was SOOOO easy in the start turn into a 2hrs. shit fest... This could have easily been a 6-1 6-1 affair or something...

Anyways we live another day to see hopefully you improve your game. :cheer: Good win for the confidence though. :yeah:

Julia played horribly in this match until 2-2 final set when she finally fired herself up and up'd the level of her game considerably.
Safina's serve is still a work in progress. 17 double faults

I was not happy the way Julia played today. For a good portion of the match Safina was able to drive Julia past the baseline and forcing her into some tough angles.Safina hitting 16 DF's played a major part in Julia winning the match.

Julia came back twice in games 3 and 4 trailing 0-30 to win both games and take a 4-2 lead in set 3,but then allowed Safina to regain momentum losing the next 2 games in set 3. Julia then showed resiliency by winning the next 2 games to take the set and match.

If Julia is going to win tomorrow against PUSH she has to do a better job of controlling the ematch. In all fairness Safina is so big and strong, she can take some of your power away. When you have 2 players with heavy shots rallies tend to be short and points can be ugly as we saw today.

Right now I am breathing a sigh of relief after Georges just barely beat Safina. Hopefully tomorrow Georges can regain her form. Georges does favor hard courts and Grass over clay as she has previously stated.

Finally someone won this match. Dinara showed some flashes of her old game. Julia is one minute playing awesome, the next minute hitting some awful errors (missing by meters and shanking shots :o). She really made it more difficult for herself to win than it should have been.

Looking forward to her rematch with Caro but she needs to play much better than this. I'm not sure about this but I believe I've heard the ES commentator mention that Julia's ill?

Not an impressive performance from Julia to say the least, I hope she can get her serve back for the next match or she's probably toast.

Big Congrats Julia:worship::kiss::worship: Maybe to win these ugly matches ist most important mentally. And to be honest, both sucked most of the time. Aweful match, brrrrr. But to grind it out is great. Now once again against Woz. Will be different for sure. GO Jule

Good fight from Dinara, but WAYYY too many unforced errors..... but some shots reminded me of 2009 Safina, but they were so sparse...

Dinara deserved to win. She made me like her a lot: she's a funny girl, a good tennis player and a respectful opponent. I cannot say the same of Goerges, who was screaming "c'mon" even if she was seing her opponent had a lot of problems.
Improve your serve, DinDin, and you will be back in Top 20, even higher than this ballbasher.

I think Wozniacki was going to have a tough match no matter who won that.
Julia held every time she served in the Stuttgart final, so Caroline has to break her this time, maybe several times to win
Dinara DF'ed too much, even though she broke Julia a few times.

Saw some glimpses of great backhands like in 2008/2009 from Dinara. Too bad, that serve nullifies just about everything.

Well done Julia. :D Its always nice to come out on top even when you arent playing your best. She looked exhausted out there at times, and it showed in her footwork and lack of patience. She'll need to up it to take out Caroline again but even a loss wouldnt be the worst thing in the world because she looks like she needs some more rest.

Maybe I'm glad I didn't see the match. I thought Dinara had managed to hold the DFs to below ten, but alas no. Come on, Dinara, work on that. She definitely has her fighting spirit back.

Good luck, Julia, but I think Caro will revenge her loss in that final.

Well, unfair comparison, but I'm watching the match...Roger is losing and he has 3 DFs and 20 aces (in the 3rd set now). Also, you are just bleeding confidence and points when you combine the DFs with all the UEs.

At the moment veteran chair umpire Lynn Welch finished her duties with these three important words and Dinara & Julia shacked hands, all the good, the bad & the ugly we saw in these 2h20’ long match is history. Only the facts will survive: Julia won her second consecutive match against Dinara (H2H: 2:1) and advanced to R3 at PM Madrid for the first time in her career.

IMO Dinara would be much more competitive if she lose one or another pound of weight and will improve her movement significantly. Otherwise it will be very tough for her to compete to Top 20 players.

:worship:Well done, Julia, keep it running!:worship:

May 4th, 2011, 09:57 PM
Julia played actually a bad match. Serve made the difference between of them. Looked tired and got frustrated at times but got the job done at the end which is the important thing. I think, she'll lose to Caro but who knows? Julia is very up&down player and we can see her performing as great as in Stuttgart.

Good fight from Dinara, btw. She'll get much better when she find her serve.

Julinha's return game laughably ineffective throughout. Even on clay, which gives her the additional time on the ball she needs due to her wide swings, she couldn't bring her FH to bear often enough. She had no business losing that second set regardless.

Post-injury Safina is clearly a more dangerous player on clay than she is on hardcourts, where she is just a pusher slowpoke and hapless sitting duck who makes her opponents look better than they really are (see her IW match vs Sharapova). Julinha couldn't do a thing with Safina's serve when it did go in, and struggled to deal with Safina's pace and heavy topspin (which again shows that Julinha is in poor form, as she had dominated Stosur from the baseline in Stuttgart). Some of those FH errors from Safina were :tape: though.

Horrendous stats, but then again in the Stosur d. Hantuchova match both players had a positive winner to UE ratio on paper yet the match was even worse.

Smitten
May 5th, 2011, 01:26 PM
Really took a few things out of this match but it was nothing new to me.

Safina's BH is a severely underrated shot especially on clay. Doesn't get enough attention in my opinion while others are praised constantly.

May 5th, 2011, 01:41 PM
Indeed..a tradtion of the Safins. You DON'T want to go into a backhand rally with them.
