Interesting fact: Petra had nearly 20 percentage points lower % of first serves in than in the previous two matches and still lost her service game only once. Maybe she was going for more on her first serves?

Stats suggest Vera played awe-inspiring 1/8 BP converted. In the first set Kvitova hit only 45% 1st serves and won 6-1.

Just quit the clay already, make up with your supermodel boyfriend and focus on Wimbledon.

How can you judge without watching the match? When Kvitova is ON, she is very tough and this is very fast clay court which can be perfect for her. The problem of Vera is not really this match as her previous matches against Patty and Lena V. when she struggled more than expected.

vera was lucky to make the 3rd round really (she got braindead vesnina), her game is only going backwards right now.

Well done on notching another top five scalp. Next round should be a little tougher but I still think she should come through. Might even make the final...we'll see. Solid start to the clay season either way.

NID match really. Kvitty GOAT is pretty much a nightmare matchup for Vera on fast clay, so the result is more than expected

Not surprised Kvitova won but wasn't expecting it to be this comfortable...

Well, the second set wasn´t exactly "comfortable": Petra got an early break but then she was broken back at 4:3. However, she was able to break Zvonareva´s serve immediately, so she was serving for the match. But the last game was quite a battle, Zvonareva had a break point.

Yuck Vera, thought she would grind out a tough win...but she was barely competitive till it was too late.

Petra is hopefully over her losing in 25k form.

Yes some are chucking off at Bepa, which is fair enough, but Petra is a bugger to beat when in the zone, sure got the size and power, funny that their scores have been similar one way or the other in their matches so far.

Hm, I've never seen Petra play here (can't believe there wasn't a stream) but I would have thought she might have struggled in the earlier rounds. It's faster clay, but you need so much more control at this altitude. If she worked her way into a rhythm, she might have really gotten into the swing of things now.

And a 3rd round before the 2nd round is even finished? :o

The first 3rd round match of the tournamnet, but no TV coverage even though it's a march between the 2nd seed and 16th seed?

Premier Mandatories like Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid seems to have less TV coverage than a number of regular Premier events.

Players and expert commentators always mention the thinner air in Madrid due to the altitude (650 m above sea level) as a reason why balls travel faster than at sea level.

But clay courts in Southern Europe are generally faster than in e.g. Scandinavia because they use finer grain clay in Southern Europe.

5 months ago when it looked like 2011 would be a 3 way race for #1 people were saying Vera's chances was good because she had little to defend until Wimbledon. Except a Doha win and a couple of SF she's done nothing to add to her total.

I guess people are not saying so anymore.

I'm just lost for words with this loss. Super pathetic performance from Bepa, she just couldn't feel the ball at all and her movement was disasterous. She had no fight or grit out there and looked like she wanted to get off the court as fast as possible. Kvitova was absolutely doing nothing special and played like a top 100 player at best but Vera still had to find a way to get thrashed. Losing to a brainless player like Kvitova on clay is just so disgraceful that I feel embarrassed being her fan.

Her current level is just miles away from her form which brought her to the Wimby and USO finals last year. I hope this is not because of Sergey leaving her and causing a negative impact on her game. She needs to overcome this hurdle soon or else shes gonna plunge down the rankings in a few months...

I'm not. This lead-up is basically only useful for the players for litarelly finding their feet on the clay. You can use this tournament to improve your movement on the dirt but the courts here play SO much faster than at RG while those courts can play like a sandy swamp mess with the right conditions. Rome is miles better as a build-up, Madrid = heaven for ballbashers.
