I was watching Maria's match and heard the commentators saying that the only 2 players that have beaten Serena in a GS final are Maria and Venus, is that true?
If so that's really special and makes Maria one of the 2 players ever to beat Serena in one of the most important matches.

According to Wikipedia Serena was in sixteen grand slam singles finals. She won thirteen of them. The three she lost were the 2001 US Open (Venus) Wimbledon, 2004 (Sharapova) and Wimbledon, 2008 (Venus).

It's unfortunate that Maria developed a shoulder problem in 2008. Otherwise, she should have won a lot more than 3 gram slam titles by now.

And Maria is unique that's also not new.

In the 19 slam semifinals that she has played, only 3 players have managed to beat her and in the 43 slam first rounds she has played, no one has beaten her

Maria actually did a better job than Venus, Serena had only 1 Slam back in 2000 she wasn't really a terror in GS finals.

Richard ordered Serena to lose that semi, and Shino'buchi is not a WTA player. So the only real loss in my book is RG '03.

And Heng used the hand trick , so I guess Sarin is undefeated in slam semis too :bounces:

yeah but since Serena had beaten Henin up in the locker room before the match and stolen her lunch money, you have to admit that the hand trick by Christine was a legit move...

Serena tanked. That is honestly the only explanation. She was en fuego the entire tournament and then played like a dog against Venus.

Please that was already her 6th event back and she had stormed through Miami the field like she never left....plus she had just beaten her nemesis Capriati in the Qtrs and had an epic with Ameilie in the Semis....

The same nemesis she had beaten 8 times in a row prior to 2004?
And the same Amelie who had never beaten Serena off of clay before 2004?

And look at her record after Miami btw

She beat Cpariati 1 and 1, that was very impressive considering their previous meetings and Mauresmo is always a tricky opponent on grass.
Anyway we both know Maria took that final from Serena, I don't know what you're trying to diminish Maria's result here.

How do you figure that, when Venus beat Serena twice in GS finals with the last time being '08 to Maria's '04?

Clijsters would only be problematic at the U.S. open, although..Serena pretty much owned Kim throughout their careers.
Henin? Serena actually leads their h2h in finals: 3-1..just the superior big match player.
Ditto for Hingis and Davenport.

First correction is that she has played Hingis in a final, and beat her - naturally.

Secondly your post makes no sense generally because it implies that Serena's record would be worse if she had faced those players more. Well of course they might have gotten a win or two. But the chances are they wouldn't have, thinking logically, because Serena beat many of those players in the slams that she did win - just before the final. Their chances would have been even smaller in the final.
