Her ground game was off today but it will be better with each match.

Really good serving.
Three-setter queen ladies and gentelman! It's 7-0...now I think.

It will be tough against Domi but if she serves like today and improve her groundstrokes she will win.

She was being smart today, especially in regards to her serve - not the hardest but at least it's not vulnerable and apparently she didn't want to have attackable second serves.

She needs to work on her forehand more, be more consistent and more depth.

Overall, her concentration was high all the time and did not make stupid errors when it mattered.

Maria actually served really well. That one break was just really stupid play from 40-15 up. She would've won that if she tapped away conventional volleys like she did vs Henin (:inlove:) and didn't try to drive volley.

Not much to say here, or see :S
Makarova was dreadful in the 1st and 3rd set and pretty solid in the 2nd, but not great quality match I'd say.
I'm interested to see how will Masha cope with someone who can play an error free game on clay, Rus and Makarova are all but that.

May 2nd, 2011, 03:14 PM
http://www.ontennis.com/news/maria%3A-i%2526%2523039%3Bm-bambi

The reigning Australian Open champion visited The Late Show With David Letterman in New York City last night. When Letterman asked why tennis is played on clay courts, Sharapova replied: "I ask the same question. When I was a junior I played a lot of tournaments on clay....Conditions are heavier so you slide around a lot. I used to say I was like a cow on ice (on clay), but now I'm like Bambi."

Contrary to the conventional wisdom, Maria is actually a very good clay court player. In fact, she has the best clay court winning percentage of all active WTA players.

Broken only once :worship:

Makarova has one of the worst return of serve I saw ever. nice strokes, fluid first serve, but the return is a disaster, such as the majority of the other left handers.

but Sharapova served about 80% until middle of second set, few double faults. if she continues to serve like that she could get a bit deeper.

Stonerpova
May 2nd, 2011, 03:55 PM
Impressed with the serve and her movement wasn't terrible, but her groundstrokes were sloppy. She seems to be holding back, especially on the forehand. I'm sure that'll change with confidence, and a win over Cibulkova will certainly help that. Apart from a bad game at 1-2 in the second set she was pretty solid. I like her chances against Cibulkova. She's gotta be pumped for that one.

"it" is getting a bit anxious about Pova improving match by match since the start of IW.

Anyway, Pova played a simply superlative match today. Her serve was especially awesome in that last game. After going down 0-30 on consequtive DF's on the first two points, and missing the 1st serve on the third point, she still managed to serve out the game for the WIN in glorious fashion!

So she changed her serve motion yet again. Now it resembles the one form 2006, when her serve was really at its best. Seems to be working well for her, she was serving great in this match and the motion itself looks very good technically and she seems to be really comfortable doing it. However, her groundgame was a mess. Too bad good serving + groundstrokes don't go together for her anymore.

I will be very surprised if she beats Cibulkova in the next round.

Well Makarova was all over the place in the third set and the only thing Maria had to do was keep the ball in play, which she did well.

Overall she was missing a lot and the statistics aren't really looking that good, even though it's not too rare for her to have a negative W/UE balance on clay. This was actually one of the rare matches lately when her serve carried the match and not her groundstrokes. Now if she only got both working at the same time she'd find her old form.

Agree those lefty players and their random first strike:eek: it can expose Maria's movement very easily but Maria did a great job.
