Makarova is an up and down player and the clay in Madrid is very fast!

So not that surprising that she can beat Wickmayer if she is in form! :)

Wickmayers terrible movement always reaches its very deep low on clay. returns like crap.

Wickmayer was my longhot as a surprise winner. Never won a set here.
Probably injured? Katya is a fast court low bounce player, not red clay

Hahaha this is the same girl that lost to Mirjana Lucic in straight sets not even 6 days ago lol.....typical WTA

Oh Yanina all my faves won their 1R match so this comes a bit surprising since I thought Makarova wouldn't be that dangerous. But she served really well and Yanina hasn't found her form yet on clay. Please improve in Rome/Brussels :)

LightsOut!

Just have a look at the results and you see that if hard hitters have a chance to do some damage on clay, then in Madrid.

Rezai won last year here and she doesn't have a special clay game. The serve is very important here and powerful groundstrokes can trouble your opponent a lot more than on other clay surfaces. So, it wouldn't be a surprise for me if players like Makarova or Kvitova would have a run here...

 Why does this draw suck so bad?

Clearly the tournament organizers have realized the only way to end the domination by my Legion of Blondes is to make them frag each other in the early rounds. :fiery:

Anyway, good job Ekat.

It's not nice having one's faves meeting in the early rounds it's true.

But at least the nicer LOB won. :rocker:

Ever since Fed Cup, I'm starting to like Makarova's game. Her ground strokes look smooth and that serve when it's on is quite impressive. 11 aces for a WTA match.
