btw, "trash" do not make 2 GS SFs, reach no. 15 in the world in singles, no. 3 in the world in doubles, and possess two GS doubles titles. she grew up in impoverished china and accomplished all of this. there weren't even many hard tennis courts back then in china, much less clay and grass courts. she didn't pick up tennis hoping to one day do it for a living, but only to use it to get exercise. it was a foreign coach that ultimately convinced her parents to allow her to pursue tennis instead of studies, saying something along the lines of, many people in china study, but few become national heroes. i'd say he made a good judgement call :) jie was the first and most important catalyst for tennis in china.
