Singles Results, Second Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Clair McKrain 7/6(4), 7/6(4)
Ziyi has faltered a bit on the clay but she played this match pressure free, knowing the #1 ranking is hers for a while.

Cornelia du Preez def. [9]Siri Cornetsson 7/5, 7/6(6)
Coco gets another strong win over a top 10 player and faces the #1 player again.

[12]Verena Jameka Starr def. Kathleen Pryde-Degman 6/7(1), 7/6(5), 7/6(4)
Verena slugged through this match in front of an entertained Madrid crowd as this one went almost three hours.

Chantal gets a surprise easy victory and now moves in to the third round.

Caroline Smith def. [5]Jane Wong 0/6, 6/2, 7/6(3)
A pretty epic win for Caroline as Jane has become the clay queen of 2011.

[13]Jennifer Casanova def. Yoona Im 7/5, 1/6, 6/2
Jenn is a once-upon-a-time French champion, so she knows how to play on the clay.

A battle of former top 5 players vying to return to their glory saw Harper barely knock off Fleri.

[3]Nthamangela Mbangu def. Chloe Gray 6/4, 7/6(2)
Nthama gets another straight set victory on the clay and could come close to #2 by doing well here.

Marteena Huubere def. [4]Giuseppina Benedetti 6/1, 1/6, 7/6(5)
Marteena knocks off the clay queen of 2010 in a third set tiebreaker.

Berenika Wojnarowska def. [15]Yelena Pirilenko 7/5, 4/6, 7/5
A good win for Berenika who had practiced her heart out over the past week.

Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu def. [16]Togtdyalttai Wachiramanowong 7/6(5), 6/3
A nice win for the Romanian who has never advanced this far in a premier mandatory.

[8]Athea Kane def. Amita Maria Young 6/3, 6/4
Athea is pounding away on the court in the hopes of a first title of the year.

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. [6]Sylvie Bailly 6/1, 7/6(5)
Em has one of the worst head to head records this year but is playing much better in Madrid.

Anastasia Nemayeva def. [11]Martine Kartincova 7/6(2), 7/6(5)
Nastya knocks off Martine for a strong win and advancement deeper into this important tournament.

Pamela Bowden def. [10]Saba Abid 6/4, 6/4
Saba has been quite the player this year but Pamela knocked her off in easy fashion.

[2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko def. Jookarae Mensarb 7/5, 6/4
Jook has won this match-up in the past, but Ruffy was ready for today.

Singles Results, Third Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Cornelia du Preez 5/7, 7/6(1), 7/6(3)
Coco was well on her way to another strong win over Ziyi, but the Chinese #1 fought like she should in an incredible victory.

Chantal Chan def. [12]Verena Jameka Starr 6/1, 7/5
Chantal is a surprise quarterfinalist here with a strong win over Verena. This should propel her into the top 50.

[13]Jennifer Casanova def. Caroline Smith 6/2, 1/6, 7/5
This battle of Americans saw the elder and higher ranked player defeat the eager youngster.

Harper Johnson def. [3]Nthamangela Mbangu 1/6, 7/6(5), 6/2
Harper's struggled quite a bit but is ecstatic over this win against the clay princess, Nthama.

Marteena Huubere def. Berenika Wojnarowska 7/6(6), 4/6, 6/4
Marteena loves winning those close tiebreaks and did so again today against Berenika.

[8]Athea Kane def. Cristina-Elena Vladimirescu 6/1, 7/6(3)
Athea stops the dream run of Cristina and continues to do well on her least favorite surface.

Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger def. Anastasia Nemayeva 6/3, 1/6, 7/5
Em knocks off Anastasia for another win and now has more wins in Madrid than the rest of the year combined.

Pamela Bowden def. [2]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 7/6(3), 3/6, 6/3
Pamela knocks off the second seed in an upset and now moves to the semifinals, further propelling herself up the rankings.

Doubles Results, Second Round

[14]Jarocka-Pottinger/Wojnarowska def. [1]Cornetsson/Johnson 7/6(4), 3/6, 6/3
Emilia is having quite a tournament in the quarterfinals of both disciplines.

[8]Graf/Huubere def. [15]Bowden/Kirilova 6/3, 7/6(1)
Sabine and Marteena have been very consistent this year and have a good shot at the Madrid title.

[5]Wong/Zianzhi def. G. Benedetti/Raymond 6/4, 7/6(4)
Ziyi and Jane could potentially win their third straight title in a row.

Kane/Smith def. [4]Bailly/Wachiramanowong 6/4, 6/2
An easy win for Athea and Jennifer as they march onwards to the quarterfinals.

[13]Chan/Vladimirescu def. [3]Felivitch/Mesane 3/6, 6/3, 6/1
A great win for the lower ranked pair who are used to dominating the challenger circuit.

Another upset in a doubles draw full of upsets.

[11]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. [6]Bartoli/Kartincova 7/5, 2/6, 6/4
Fleri and Kath have had a great clay season but are still in search of their first title of 2011.

[12]Nemayeva/Perez def. [2]Casanova/Taliamanosoko 7/6(4), 6/7(0), 7/6(4)

"I am very happy to see Emilia is winning some matches now. It is very important while we awaits the French Open when she have semifinal points to defend." - said Magda Gessler, new coach of young Canadian.

"I was considering a break, a longer one, but at that time I won Charleston with Graf, and we did so well with Sam in Fed Cup. You know, coming here I had 4 wins and about 14 loses, not good, you see. So having those 3 matches won, agaisnt really good players, it makes me happy. I just hope this is a good sign for the rest of the season. If not, well I am married, so there's a life after tennis *laughs*" - added Emilia.

I just wanna see how the training looks like with Magda as a coach :spit:

If you know her, you know she probably would cook before training, eat it while painting at the training, and she would motivate you using alot of words, colorful statements, mostly making you wondering 'I don't know what she saying, but it force me to believe it'. And after the tarining there are all the chocolate cakes to eat she says.

Singles Results, Quarterfinals

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Chantal Chan 3/6, 6/3, 7/6(3)
Another strong win from Ziyi as she is further solidifying herself at the top of the rankings.

[13]Jennifer Casanova def. Harper Johnson 6/3, 1/6, 7/5
This all-American quarterfinal saw the one who had won a grand slam on clay defeat the one who had won a grand slam on the hard courts.

Marteena Huubere def. [8]Athea Kane 7/6(4), 3/6, 6/3
Marteena has been vying for a great tournament and so far, Madrid, has been that tournament.

Pamela Bowden def. Emilia Jarocka-Pottinger 3/6, 6/4, 7/6(3)
Pamela follows up on yesterday's upset with a defeat of the dream run of Emlia, who still walks away very happy.

Doubles Results, Quarterfinals

Marteena and Sabine are having a great time and it's evident by their wins of the past week.

[5]Wong/Zianzhi def. Kane/Smith 7/5, 7/5
Will Ziyi and Jane ever be stopped? Caroline and Athea pushed them in both sets but couldn't overcome the other side's incredible team work.

[13]Chan/Vladimirescu def. Afanasyeva/Im 1/6, 7/6(1), 6/1
The 13th seeds get another come from behind win and now find themselves in the semifinals.

[12]Nemayeva/Perez def. [11]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman 7/6(2), 6/3
Nastya and Vittoria were able to knock off the more successful pair for a spot in the semifinals in a premier mandatory tournament.

Huubere learning to love her clay feet

http://www.all-photos.net/pictures/d/69955-2/Anke+Huber+picture+a14.jpg

Australian Marteena Huubere always used to hate clay courts. Struggling to coordinate her movement and having to hit more than 2 or 3 shots to win the rally used to frustrate the hard-hitting former world #1. "Growing up in Australia, we play mainly on hardcourts and have minimal experience on clay" Huubere after her QF win over 8th seeded Athea Kane.

Huubere was a surprise champion at Roland Garros in 2008. Despite having won 3 Grand Slams previously, Huubere had never looked comfortable on the red surface. It had also been almost 5 years since her previous GS victory, the 2003 Wimbledon Championships. "Roland Garros in 2008 was such a surprise. I was fighting my way back into the top 20/15/10 and then out of the blue came a GS title. I think I took everyone, including myself, by surprise."

It was that victory though, which changed her attitude to the surface. "I realised throughout the tournament that I just needed a little more patience, and maybe a little more concentration than I had been willing to put in before. I started to learn to like the clay."

With a goal of finishing 2011 in the top 10, Huubere had high expectations for the hardcourt season at the beginning of the year. "I put a bit too much pressure on myself at the start of this year. I'm just beginning to relax a little more and the results are coming finally." Huubere had won only 9 matches in the hardcourt season. With the clay season only having just begun, Huubere has already won 9 matches on the dirt, with SF showings at Stuttgart and now at Madrid.

"I'm loving the dirt this year and hope I can continue picking up my form and turning my year around. A title here would be absolutely fantastic, but I don't want to jinx anything".

Singles Results, Semifinals

[13]Jennifer Casanova def. [1]Ziyi Zianzhi 7/6(4), 0/6, 6/1
This was a pretty epic win for Jennifer who is almost certain to move back in to the top 10 pretty soon. She was blanked by Ziyi's awesome play in the second set but was able to recover and win the third set pretty easily for a shot at the title tomorrow.

Pamela Bowden def. Marteena Huubere 3/6, 6/4, 7/5
Pamela defeats another FWTT legend in this terrific event for her. This time it was the multiple Grand Slam winner Marteena Huubere who was highly favored to win. It was a tough match, but in the end, Pamela showed her nerves of steel of 2011 are paying off.

Doubles Results, Semifinals

[8]Graf/Huubere def. [5]Wong/Zianzhi 7/6(2), 2/6, 6/4
Marteena and Ziyi both wanted this match after losing their singles matches. In the end, the lower seeded pair of veterans were able to win this and stop the remarkable winning streak of Jane and Ziyi.

[12]Nemayeva/Perez def. [13]Chan/Vladimirescu 6/4, 7/5
Anastasia and Vittoria win again, this time against the team that ruled the challenger circuit earlier in the year. The Spanish were all out for this one and cheered their girl, Vittoria, on until the end.

[13]Jennifer Casanova def. Pamela Bowden 7/5, 4/6, 7/5
Jennifer defeats the amazing Pamela in a tight match in Madrid. Both players had epic draws to reach this point and should be very proud of their accomplishment. Pamela is certain to go into the top 10 of the race rankings while Jenn looks favorable to move back into the regular top 10.

[12]Nemayeva/Perez def. [8]Graf/Huubere 4/6, 6/4, 7/6(6)
What a match for the Spanish crowd! Their lone hope was Vittoria in doubles after all the Spanish lady were defeated early in singles. She and Anastasia had to knock off Grand Slam champions and ITF queens just to get to the point of facing these two ladies, Marteena and Sabine, who have won numerous titles as well. It was tightly contested match that had the atmosphere of Fed Cup and finally the Spanish and Russian duo were able to overcome the German and Aussie to win the biggest title of their career.
