Clijsters & Henin: Belgium rules the roost
By Sandra Harwitt
********************

1. Kim Clijsters: Belgian successfully defended her title in Luxembourg, a sign that she's stepping up to finish the job at hand. The win gives Clijsters three trophies for the year and some momentum she'll hope to build on in 2003. Teen is a hot talent, but sometimes being too nice has worked to her disadvantage. But it's hard to fault someone for being too nice, too much of the time.

Kim should be heading to LA today, according to Belgian papers.

She watched Lleyton in his 2nd round match yesterday night in Paris btw.

Clijsters Puts Injury Worries Behind Her
Reuters

BRUSSELS - Belgium's Kim Clijsters believes the shoulder injury that has hampered her for much of this season has cleared and says she is looking forward to next season with renewed confidence.

"I no longer have to pull back from putting everything into a training session or a match, I don't have any worries for the 2003 season," the world No. 6, who was knocked out early at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, told Belgian weekly Sport Magazine.

The 19-year-old Clijsters also told the magazine that unlike her fellow Belgian Justine Henin, who gets married next month, she had no intentions just yet of wedding her boyfriend, Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt.

"I'll get married when I'm able to spend my free time with my husband, which is far from being the case right now. My life is too chaotic," Clijsters said.

They're making it sound as if Lleyton is begging Kim to marry him and she's refusing :o :p

She's 19 years old. Why would she be in a hurry to get married? The media really need to give her and Lleyton a break

Kim Clijsters: Higher and higher

Kim Clijsters’s Championships record has been one of steady improvement, so don’t be surprised if you see the 19-year-old playing off in the Monday-night final.

Clijsters is making her third appearance in the season-ending event. In her debut at Madison Square Garden in 2000, the Belgian upstaged Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario to reach the quarterfinals, where she lost to Russian sensation Elena Dementieva in three sets.

Last year, she went one better, beating both Dementieva and Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario to reach the semis and came within a tiebreak of the final. In her semifinal against Lindsay Davenport, the American injured her knee on the second last point of the match, and while she managed to hobble to victory, she was unable to contest the final against Serena Williams.

Clijsters has endured an up-and-down year, reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, rising to a career-high No.3 ranking and winning Hamburg with a brilliant three-set win over Venus Williams in the final.

The rest of the European swing was disappointing, falling in the third round of Roland Garros and the second round at Wimbledon. But after traveling without a coach for a couple of months (splitting with long-time mentor Carl Maes just before Wimbledon), Kim teamed up with her former junior coach Marc Dehous for the US hardcourt circuit.

The results were almost immediate, with Clijsters reaching the Stanford final, beating Davenport en route. She pushed Venus to three sets in the San Diego quarterfinals and lost in the 7-5 third set against Amélie Mauresmo in the US Open fourth round, in what some are calling the match of the year on the Sanex WTA Tour.

After a runner-up finish at the Toyota Princess Cup in Tokyo (pushing Serena to three sets), Clijsters was very impressive indoors. She reached the semifinals of Leipzig, then defeated Davenport, Mauresmo and Hantuchova in consecutive three-setters (saving match point against Mauresmo in the semis) to win her first Filderstadt crown.

Two weeks later she tasted victory in Luxembourg for the third time in four years, conceding the fewest games en route of any Tour singles champion in 2002 (14).

In fine form and with a tank full of gas, get ready for a big performance from a free-swinging Kim Clijsters.

Also I thought that kim had 9 career titles:confused:
