Singles Results, Qualifying First Round

[8]Caroline Smith def. Fatima Mayou 6/1, 7/6(10)
Caroline seems to be playing with a bit more confidence in Barcelona.

[7]Karen Amato def. Kristen Braeden 7/6(6), 6/3
Karen recovers from a close first set to close out the match in two against newcomer Kristen.

[6]Alesandra Kirilova def. Jessamine Minella 4/6, 7/6(6), 6/4
Alesandra had to fight for this one and clawed her way back to victory.

[5]Berenika Wojanrowska def. Hafdis Bjork Runarsdottir 6/3, 7/5
Berenika made the final last week - can she do the same in Spain?

VSFan1 aka Joshua L.
Apr 27th, 2011, 01:27 AM
Singles Results, Qualifying Second Round

[1]Togtdyalttai Wachiramanowong def. [8]Caroline Smith 7/5, 7/6(4)
We thought Caroline had the mojo to knock off Tog but it wasn't meant to be.

[7]Karen Amato def. [3]Lindsay Raymond 7/5, 6/2
Karen went for the upset today and walks away the winner.

[2]Harper Johnson def. [6]Alesandra Kirilova 7/6(5), 6/0
The former Aussie champ has been relegated to qualifying but she is able to knock off Kirilova in two sets.

[4]Mia Henriksson def. [5]Berenika Wojnarowska 6/3, 1/6, 7/5
Mia is able to stop the power of Berenika and move into the qualifying round.

Apr 27th, 2011, 02:07 AM
Ah well one win.

Apr 27th, 2011, 07:51 AM

Singles Results, Qualifying Round

[1]Togtdyalttai Wachiramanowng def. [7]Karen Amato 6/4, 0/6, 6/3
Tog has been real quiet, especially since the absence of Sylvie, but manages to get three in a row for the main draw in Barcelona.

[4]Mia Henriksson def. [2]Harper Johnson 6/4, 1/6, 6/4
Harper was embarrassed to lose in qualifying but Mia is a quality opponent and this was a very tough draw.

Apr 28th, 2011, 02:06 AM
Ah well one win.

Singles Results, First Round

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Candela Sanchez 6/4, 4/6, 7/6(4)
Ziyi gets an epic win against Candy in a raucous Barcelona crowd who clearly wanted the Spaniard to win.

Pamela Bowden def. [6]Fleri Hingisafrilia 7/5, 6/4
Pamela has had a good 2011 but Fleri was expected to win this match and she was not happy at the end of it.

Anastasia Nemayeva def. [8]Kathleen Pryde-Degman 7/6(1), 7/5
A good win for Nastya who is clamoring to get back in to the top 20.

[4]Athea Kane def. [WC]Rita Cebolla 7/6(6), 6/7(4), 7/6(5)
Athea, the reigning RG champion, got a little lucky against a crowd favorite, Rita, but still gets the win.

[3]Jane Wong def. [Q]Togtdyalttai Wachiramanowong 6/7(3), 7/6(3), 7/5
Jane is looking to recapture her FCC glory and barely made it past Tog who had to win just three matches to make it to the main draw.

Vittoria Perez def. [7]Clair McKrain 6/3, 7/6(1)
Vittoria was favored being at home and on clay so this match was no surprise.

[5]Siri Cornetsson def. [WC]Regla Torres 6/1, 0/6, 7/6(3)
This was a classic match that went the distance, we just hope one day the two can play in finals and not first rounds.

[2]Giuseppina Benedetti def. [Q]Mia Henriksson 0/6, 6/1, 7/6(2)
Giusa should be cruising on this clay but she looked like an amateur in the first set and barely eeked it out over Mia in the third set tiebreaker.

Apr 29th, 2011, 10:29 PM
Singles Results, Qualifying

[1]Ziyi Zianzhi def. Pamela Bowden 6/4, 0/6, 6/2
Pammy blanked Ziyi in the second set but was all out of energy in the end as the top ranked player in the world moves to the semifinals.

[4]Athea Kane def. Anastasia Nemayeva 6/3, 7/5
Athea does not prefer clay but she always performs well as evidenced by her solid victory over Nastya.

[3]Jane Wong def. Vittoria Perez 6/4, 1/6, 7/5
The Spanish lost their final hope today as Jane regroups from last week's early exit in Stuttgart.

[5]Siri Cornetsson def. [2]Giuseppina Benedetti 6/0, 0/6, 7/6(5)
A very odd match indeed but Giusa was upset by the Swede but both players were really pretty even.

VSFan1 aka Joshua L.
Apr 29th, 2011, 10:31 PM
Doubles Results, First Round

[Q]McKrain/Smith def. [1]Cornetsson/Johnson 6/4, 6/4
What's going on with the partnership of Harper and Siri? They started out 2011 strong but fell today to the American qualifiers of Caroline and Clair.

[3]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. Bowden/Kirilova 7/6(1), 6/3
All four have been eliminated from singles so it was very important for one team to win, which Fleri and Kath did.

Henriksson/Wojnarowska def. [4]Nemayeva/Perez 7/5, 7/6(3)
And now it's official - no Spaniard will even be in the semifinals of Barcelona of either event.

[2]Wong/Zianzhi def. G. Benedetti/Raymond 6/3, 0/6, 6/4
The Chinese team are having quite a tournament in the semifinals of both disciplines.

Apr 29th, 2011, 11:03 PM
Giusa :help: ... to think, I used to win on clay.

Siri now leads me 5-4 in arguably my most epic H2H ;)

Apr 29th, 2011, 11:34 PM

Siri Cornetsson edges out second seeded

In Barcelona Siri Cornetsson finally showed some signs of life again as she battled past experienced clay courters Regla Torres 6:1 0:6 7:6(3) and Giuseppina Benedetti 6:0 0:6 7:6(5) in order to reach her first semifinal since Auckland.

"It's a nice feeling to win matches like that again after what I've gone through in the past couple of weeks. I hope to be ready for the big clay events and collect some points there in order to maintain my top 10 spot until Roland Garros. It won't be easy."

In semifinals of Barcelona Siri Cornetsson will meet Jane Wong against whom she has already lost twice this season.

Singles Results, Semifinals

[4]Athea Kane def. [1]Ziyi Zianzhi 7/5, 6/2
Athea defeated the top ranked player in the world, something she's done to other #1 players before, and moves to the finals of Barcelona.

[3]Jane Wong def. [5]Siri Cornetsson 6/7(2), 7/6(2), 7/5
Jane is for certain back. After her FCC win and Fed Cup stardom, she took Siri to the extreme and now faces the defending RG champ in the finals.

[3]Hingisafrilia/Pryde-Degman def. [Q]McKrain/Smith 7/6(5), 7/6(6)
Fleri and Kath are scratching their way back to the top as evidenced by this hard fought win.

[2]Wong/Zianzhi def. Henriksson/Wojnarowska 6/4, 1/6, 6/3
Jane and Ziyi are quite the pair nowadays and will go for their second straight title tomorrow.

[3]Jane Wong def. [4]Athea Kane 7/6(6), 3/6, 6/2
Athea was on a title roll in 2010 but can't win in a final this year. Meanwhile Jane gets her second title of the year, on clay, and is an early favorite for Roland Garros.

Jane and Ziyi do it again and defeat Fleri and Kath again. These two teams are creating a bit of a rivalry, especially since Fleri wants a title real bad!
