The Recording Industry Association of America just certified Britney for selling more than 100 million records and is thus the best-selling female artist of the 2000s. Congrats, Brit!

You gotta go by the numbers, really, it's Britney - Bitch. Maybe there's an argument for Mariah Carey as she combines talent and commercial success. Rihanna is young, maybe she could inherit the throne some time soon enough.

Adele and Alicia Keys are the most talented ones I can think of though.

Mariah has no place on that list. As far as pop goes she has hasn't much of an international presence for 5 years or more. She's a legend - no mistake, but not a Queen of Pop any more. You may as well include Tina Turner, Celine Dion and Whitney as include Mariah.

I'm not a Madonna fan but she had a studio album that went #1 all over the world and single that most people who listen to pop musc will recognise just a few years ago. And you didn't include her on the list

is the pope a religious figure!? of course the queen is MADONNA! THE FACT THAT YOU DIDN'T EVEN PUT HER NAME IN THE POLL WOULD BE LIKE OMITTING ELVIS IN A POLL OF THE KING OF ROCK N' ROLL OR OMITTING MICHAEL JACKSON IN A POLL OF THE KING OF POP!

worldwide the number 1 female (STILL!) concert performer, breaking records all the time ( her records i might add) has sold more albums than other woman worldwide, has top 10 hits than any other woman and more top ten hits than even elvis, and is about to pass the beatles, so eventually will have the most top 10 hits male or female ALL TIME! right now she has around 38! can you people even fathom that! 38 top ten hits! no one has even half that much! also she has the second most number 1 hits after mariah in the u.s. market, but maybe has the most number 1 hits worldwide in other countries than mariah, has influenced artists and fashion and social issues more than any other female artist in history, has had more media coverage than any female artists in history and yes, over the years has been written about in articles as both the most famous woman in the world for the past decades (except for perhaps princess diana) and is universally written in articles as the queen of pop for years now!

just like elvis will always be the king of rock n' roll, marilyn monroe the greatest sex symbol, etcetera madonna will always be the queen of pop! lady gaga is hot right now and perhaps is indeed "the new madonna" but she has to be hot, needs to have about 30 plus more hits and around for another 30 YEARS! to be a rival to madonna's throne and with the fast pace world of 24/7 media and the public always looking obsessively for the next thing, the next hottest thing, i don't know if gaga or any woman will be able to pull that off!

if you ask britney, gaga, beyonce, perry themselves they will universally admit that madonna is the queen and always will be! mariah with her attitude and whitney will her holier than thou but obvious hypocricy might disagree though!

If you include creative talent and voice, it has to be Mariah. If you dont include them then who knows.

laschutz

mariah? has the voice of a generation, even though i personally do NOT like it, she sings AT YOU, AND NOT TO YOU! SHE LIKE WHITNEY seems to "get off on" hearing her own voice, sorry i think she and whitney have led to the now screaming not singing rage that we have now from so many female singers including those damn runs where they make a simple word like let's say "word" have 20 sylllables!

creative talent of mariah? not sure what you mean, her stage shows? hmm, not so much! to me a creative talent is someone who is creative in the stage of shows down to including sets and the lighting and the costumes and the "stories" that are told with the songs being sung, (obviously madonna is number 1 in this regard) and to other aspects of the singer's career, from photo shoots, to publicity,to the cd's and the songs they choose to sing and write and so on, madonna excels in all of this as well, mariah does a good job in the singing of songs and some of the writing she does.

As for the "overall Queen," I agree. If we go with the "current Queen," it's probably Gaga. Frighteningly, Rihanna and Katy Perry are probably right behind Gaga at 2 and 3 for "current Queen." The latter two being strong evidence of the sad state of today's pop music. These days, droves of nine year old girls can jump on iTunes and, God forbid, gobble up Ke$ha singles pushing the horrid 'singer' to #1 on the Hot-100 charts. Shit like that didn't happen in the days when people had to actually had to get their ass to a record store and buy the actual singles the record companies put out. The records that have been set so far are all in jeopardy of being broken, not for reasons such as how many people want to have a particular song in their music library, but for such reasons as who is paying iTunes vs who is downloading illegally. Take Rihanna: bitch can't sing well but some of her songs are catchy. Saying that, 10 #1 singles so far? It's a mess.

what do you all consider modern pop what the last 10 years? LOL! madonna worldwide globally is still THE ICON, THE LEGEND, trust me if all these women heaven forbid of course mentioned in this poll all died today, who do you think would get the most attention and be the most revered? of course it would be madonna.

nuff said. i agree with poster justin in that nowadays illegal downloads, watching songs on various internet places and buying them, cheapens the music and cheapens the success of earlier stars when you had to actually go and buy the albums, cassettes, cd's in stores ( i'm old school i guess i still buy cd's in stores!) with that being said and at the rate of media 24/7 public consumption and throwaway and discarted "pop"music it just may be harder for those who are HOT right now gaga, perry, etcetra to stay on top 5, 10 years from now much less 25 plus years from now!

in fact, for the artists the BIG MONEY now is in touring and perhaps this is a better argument to be made as to who is the most successful and in this criteria madonna reigns.

Some stats on their music careers:

Mariah Carey:
Age 41.
13 Studio Albums: Remarkably 12/13 were top 5 US chart successes (the other peaking at 7), many of which peaked at no.1 worldwide.
Biggest hits: "Fantasy", "Heartbreaker", and "We Belong Together" She has had numerous singles peak at no.1 in the US.

Yer, and your stats for Mariah are off note. For one, her biggest hits never included 'heartbreaker'. They were "One Sweet Day","Fantasy" and "WBT". Failed to mention she has 18 number one hits, more than any female and living and active act. Failed to mention she's sold 63million albums in the US and 200million worldwide (just albums). Had at least one number one hit for a decade (1990>) and 15 between 1990 and 2000 (10 between 1990 - 1995).

I wouldn't call Mariah a pop act, rather a recording artist, producer, performer and writer. She dominated the charts when the music industry was at its height. And despite conflicts with Sony/Columber still seemed to pump out the hits despite their withdrawn promotion and support from 1995 > until she changed labels.

shouldn't the definition of queen be someone whose been around longer and successful for more than 2 years (gaga, perry) or someone whose been hot for only 10 years (beyonce)?

obviously madonna, then mariah fill the definition of QUEEN, once again every media outlet in the world (tv, papers, magazines, etc.) various music magazines always call madonna the queen of pop that is her KNOWN moniker, just like michael jackson was always called the king of pop.

i give the edge of madonna over mariah, because while they are pretty equal in sales, number 1 hits, etcetera, madonna has a huge edge over mariah in number of top 10 hits not only in the states but worldwide, plus madonna is the number 1 not only female but female or male solo act concert act in the world. plus she gets like i said more media attention.

Im not really a fan, so determining her biggest hits, along with this poll mean its going to be a bit subjective. Mariah isnt really super popular outside the us and stating she has 18 no.1 hits is misleading.

And to everyone asking why i didn't inculde Madonna, while it is indisputable she shaped the pop industry, i didn't really see her still in today's limelight. But yes i agree, in retrospect when compared to some of the choices in the poll, she could replace them even in today's era :)

Of the others it's probably Beyonce vs Britney even though Gaga is clearly the lady of the current moment.

I'd probably give it to Britney as although Beyonce is miles ahead of her in terms of talent, Britney's music has always been more mainstream IMHO - even if a lot of it is awful.

Er... so what was that song she 'wrote' "smash into you"? Pretty sure we can settle the score on that one... was a proven copy. I'll be straight with you, Beyonce employs writers like Britney et al, however, Beyonce buys rights to the songs she sings. Even Mariah has done this with her more recent work with The-Dream with "H.A.T.E.U", in short he wrote the song, she bought the rights and altered his version slightly. In my opinion, the only two artists out there actually writing and producing their own songs or at least make an effort to do so are Mariah and Lady Gaga, the rest are all puppets of their labels.

britney? baby one more time? lol! oh, so modern pop music started 10 years or so ago? LOL!

figures, no one here knows anything past 10 years or so ago.

ask britney what she thinks and without hesitation she will say (as she has said over and over) the queen is madonna, pop music is defined by b.m and a.m. ( before madonna and after madonna) nuff said!

don't know if i can keep on posting on this subject because for some odd reason the majority of all you other posters don't post any information and facts and what not to solidify your choices.

do most of you even look at previous postings, or do you just say what you personally think without anything to back up your statement. that's another thing the question isn't really who YOU PERSONALLY think is the queen, but more who IS the QUEEN by the majority of the public's mind (and not just in the u.s. i might add!) the media's mind and so on.

i've posted facts and information over and over to validate my choice and not just my personal choice, but the truth of who the media around the world think is the queen (madonna) whereas is everyone'e else. a couple of you have listed mariah's stats and what not, but that's about it.

And what's wrong with laschutz pointing out the fallacy in what people think?

Who cares? It's not as if the term means anything

Opinions concerning music shouldn't be influenced by what the media think or sales. That's a view that should be reserved for managers, marketing people, etc. Music is more than that. In my opinion the 'queen' is Kate Bush, and that's all I have to say about it. Why should I support my opinion?

Fine, express your opinion but don't get surprised when someone calls it out for being baseless. FYI this is a FORUM where people have DISCUSSIONS & DEBATES supported by ARGUMENTS.

How can you argue about music? :weirdo:

You either like it or you don't. Simple as that.

girl can't you read? the question is simple and it isn't about what music you like.

Music refers to taste. What else is there to argue about? You can never say who's the queen of pop (whatever that might mean) because there's no way you can argue about it without going back to taste. This is not an objective discussion with a definitve answer, so why are you trying to make it so?

Well lots of people have posted in this thread how they're not a fan of X singer but they can objectively say that she is the 'queen of modern pop music'. It's not really a question of music taste IMO

well actually this whole poll is balls lmao:lol: i'm slightly confused also... queen of pop? or queen of pop in the last 10years?

firstly, where is madonna or janet?:tape: legendary pop queens right there...:wavey:

from this list it's gotta be mariah cuz she is the best singer, writes and produces all her hits (18 #1's in total in the US:worship:) no bitch can argue with that haha:lol:

Mariah has no place on that list. As far as pop goes she has hasn't much of an international presence for 5 years or more. She's a legend - no mistake, but not a Queen of Pop any more. You may as well include Tina Turner, Celine Dion and Whitney as include Mariah.

I'm not a Madonna fan but she had a studio album that went #1 all over the world and single that most people who listen to pop musc will recognise just a few years ago. And you didn't include her on the list

you is silly:help: 5 years? well actually she had the song of the decade WBT (#1 for 14weeks), and also had #1's with DFAU and TMB (which was in 2008;))... if mariah fucking carey don't deserve a spot on this poll, who tha fuck does? she can't even sit to have twins but y'all say she been out for 5years... even MOAIA yielded a top10 hit (Obsessed), and IWTKWLI was #1 in latin america for like 30weeks!!!! i'm just sayin' cuz y'all know that album 'flopped' or w/e... haha:lol: truth being that cd sold up on 2million copies worldwide and was considered a 'flop'... gawd even her xmas album went GOLD off of nothin'... i really don't think the rest of them will be doing that at 40y.o... (BRITNEY ESPECIALLY LMAO)

anyway still mad madonna and janet ain't here.

BUT if you ask within the last 2/3 years then the answer is GaGa, easy... but if it's who is the QUEEN. period. gtf

I love Mimi, but I don't immediately think of her as "modern" pop music. There is another generation after her that I consider "modern" - Britney, Beyonce, Katy etc. That's why I didn't vote for her.

Of the list, it has to be Britney. Any thought of giving it to Beyonce faded after the poor reaction to "Girls". Britney releases are still huge "events". GaGa too, but she has not been around long enough.

Of course Gaga's winning.

The only one in this poll anywhere near close to Queen status is Mimi.
