Ok ive known about this 'church' for ages, and the things they picket and protest are just disgusting. They protested outside a soldier from iraq's funeral and also a murdered gay boys funeral.

But they serve a purpose for a lot of people on both sides of the political aisle. Those who have milder anti-gay views can use them as a lightning rod to deflect criticism, while a lot of people on the left (and I notice this especially from Europe) inflate their importance in order to say "Look how evil Middle America [from a US perspective] is" or "Look how many evil Americans [from a European perspective] there are".

They are generally desperate for attention, so I wonder that counter demonstrations just give them what they want.

I think you need to be a bit more careful with that unless you really know what you are talking about, but I doubt you really know what a fundamentalist is. Most of those so-called fundamentalists are not really that. If they were, they would know to keep their mouths shut and not seek attention.

I'll give you an example of who I have in mind...Pat Robertson. A lot of his reactions to global disasters have at least been in the same ballpark as the Westboro loons, based on the same essential idea. They take it further, but it is absolutely the same foundation.

Pat Robertson is your typical celebrity evangelist plus political clown. He's about as religious as Sarah Palin. If those are the people you have in mind, I have nothing more to say.
