Yeah, Schiavone doesn't skip Fed Cup without a reason. I see 3 overhyped players in one quarter with Caro and Jelena. Nice, some of those bandwagoners will be sad

Vika has a good draw, she should make at leat SF without too much trouble the way she's been playing lately. In SF she may encounter a clay specialist having a good tournament (Stosur/Sanchez/Dulgheru).

Draw won't change now. Too late. So a Q/LL has a bye
OOP already out.

WTA rulebook page 72:

iii. Main Draw and Qualifying – After the Release of the Schedule
of Play
(a) Prior to the 1st Match of the Event
If a seed withdraws from the Main Draw or Qualifying after
the release of the schedule of play, the day preceding the
start of the event (singles or doubles), up until the commencement of the first match of the event involved:
(i) The next eligible seed takes the open spot, and
(ii) A Qualifier/Lucky Loser (or an Alternate Wild Card if
the withdrawal was from a Wild Card) takes the spot
created by her move

think this means Radwanska gets a bye & Q/LL plays Martínez?

Jorn

So Caro will play LL/Q or Q?

also Anna Chak, in MD.

Caro's draw suddenly is much easier.
So who would have the bye?

Jorn

If they follow the Rule book:

(i) The next eligible seed takes the open spot

But who's the next 'eligible' Seed?

Daniela-Is-Mine

Probably JJ since the next two seeds are already on the OOP?

Radwanska, I assume - she'd be the 9th seed.

Interpreting strictly, yes, I also infer that Radwanska is the "next eligible seed". Also strictly, it seems a Q/LL would take Radwanska spot, meaning a Qualifier vs Qualifier/LL match, instead of the Radwanska vs Qualifier match.

To be honest, I don't know if there is context around it but, the rule cited is pretty ambiguous, as it doesn't define exactly who is "[t]he next eligible seed". Maybe to WTA officials is pretty clear (or is defined somewhere else in the rulebook), but to us mortals is not that clear.

What makes me doubt about the Radwanska QvsQ/LL interpretation is that it just seems too good for Agnieszka. Out of the sudden she gets a 1st round bye, and a second round match against a Qualifier/LL.

Another, not so strict, interpretation is that either Azarenka or Stosur are the "next eligible seed". Azarenka because she is right under Schiavone in the seeding, but it could also be Stosur, with the rationale that Azarenka is already receiving a bye and Stosur is the next seed that isn't. I don't know if officials can interpret the rule as they see fit (giving Radwanska a bye over four better ranked players just doesn't seem right), or if there are strict interpretation criteria. Guess we will see in a few hours.

Also, Wickmayer (not seeded) is clearly been replaced by a Q/LL, right?

Jorn
Apr 18th, 2011, 09:48 AM
Yes, Wickmayer will be replaced by Q/LL

Any news will it be like TBE said, Fran's place taken by Q/LL or the next Seed get In on her place?

Plus I have to admit that I wanted Radwanska to advance easily to the QFs  ...

And now the most interesting part of the draw (Woz,Kvitova,Wick,Petko,Jankovic) became one of the dullest. Only a Woz vs Petko rematch in the QF could make it interesting  .

The preceding few paragraphs of the rule book (regarding what to do when players withdraw before the schedule is out) all write 'next player eligible to be seeded', which is unambiguous. I suppose by the end they were just fed up of writing 6 words and took a shortcut.

tbf, it would just be a replay of Charleston mostly :p weird to have the draw repeat itself so much.

Yep, I also noticed that. The specific rule that would have applied is the only one with the ambiguous phrasing. So, inferring the meaning from the other rules phrasings, then it would have been Radwanska.

tbf, it would just be a replay of Charleston mostly :p weird to have the draw repeat itself so much.

I was thinking more like a Miami rehash where Petko takes on Jankovic and Wozniacki  . Also the Wickmayer vs Woz in Charleston was a close match, three setter with only a break of difference, and I even recall that Wick was up a break in the third set.
But yes, it would also have been a Charleston rehash with Wozniacki vs Wick and then vs Jankovic. I mean, a Woz vs Jank rematch will be dull, straight repetition from Charleston.
