Currently is the European Championship.

Mustafina has dominated the qualifications.

No one from Romania qualified to beam finals, that was shocking!

oh Queen Khorkina :worship: my absoulet number one favorite AG gymnast

I┤m GUTTED at Porgras missing the AA and beam final and at Kononenko missing UB finals :sobbing: :sobbing:

I┤m hoping to see Mustafina kicking some ass in AA.

and it may be too much to ask but I would LOVE to watch Chuso winning vault :worship:

I┤m going for
AA: Mustafina
VT: Chusivitina (wish) Mustafina (realistic)
UB: Tweddle
BB: Mustafina/Dementieva
FX: Izbasa

does my avatar works??
should be this one:

The avatar doesn't move.

What has happened to Porgras? Is she adjusting to her new body, or is it the beam coach leaving?

Without chocking, Mustafina is going to dominate the championship. Her confidence is the best, she has the worst twists of all World champions :sobbing: but she has no weak event, perfect landings, so powerful and acts like a star.

Oh and Khorkina, the only gymnast that I keep watching her routines every week. I don't know, she is not the best gymnast or the strongest but there is something that is so appealing about her gymnastics.

Danči Dementia
Apr 7th, 2011, 10:17 AM
Porgras fell on vault, floor and beam during qualies  :sobbing:

I think she has an injury or is sick of something, I dunno for sure, she does looks heavier though.....

Nabieva┤s twists are worst than Mustafina :sobbing:
if Aliya hits she┤ll win AA, VT and BB, I don┤t think she┤ll win UB or FX if Tweddle and Izbasa hit though.
she┤s very stable and a fierce competitor so I think she┤ll go home with at least 3 pretty gold medals.

how can I get my avatar to move?? :sobbing:

Khorkina was special, very unique, people can complain what they want about her form or being a diva or whatever but she┤s definietly one of the best top 5 gymnasts in history from wherever side you look at it (medal count, elements)she┤s a sports legend :worship:

What happened with Porgras? Is she having growing problems? That's sad, she had such a lovely light quality to her gymnastics last year which you don't often see anymore.

Komova has an ankle injury, I believe. I don't think it's that serious but it's better to be safe than sorry.

And I heard that Porgras was great in training. She must have just had a bad day.

My Mustafa got injured and had to be taken to the hospital in a wheelchair :hysteric: :hysteric:

Anna Dementieva is the new European Champion, I┤m happy for her she along Mustafina and Porgras stand for what AG is about and I┤m even happier because now she can go and rub it into her teammates face to they┤ll dislike her and set her aside for a good reason, specially that b!tch Semenova

way to go Anna!! :worship: :inlove:

I highly doubt Mustafina will compete in the finals so that means Dementieva for UB and FX finals!!! :D

as much as I love her, with her awful technique honestly I┤m surprised she didn┤t got injured before

I really hope its nothing serious

Here! :wavey:

Even from Romania!

Ana, that was utterly shit yesterday...
Failing in the qualies as the officiating world champ... :help:

But that's gymnastics! One fall and everything is over... :o

It's speculated that she has some smaller injury, but she was so shocked herself yesterday that she didn't say any word to the press which I can understand very well at her age!
Pressure here in Romania on the girls is barely endurable after that domination at Sydney and all the following retirements, but I hope that Octavian Bellu can bring us back on top! :)

But my hopes are still on the blond angel Sandra! Never thought that she will come back from her serious injury so strongly! :inlove:
And Diana will try her best to nettle one of the Russian girls! :cheer:

Mustafina really got injured at the most inapt time of the year? Damn, that's pure tragedy!

Can she compete tomorrow?

Poor Mustafina.

Didn't Yekaterina Lobaznyuk have a similar injury (on vault too) which ended her career back in 2001?

Danči Dementia
Apr 9th, 2011, 09:49 AM
well Lobaz had a torn meniscus (or whatever that is in English) but she also had torn ligaments on the same knee so hers was a lot more ugly.

now I┤m reading that they have retracted the statement about her tearing the meniscus, the "real" diagnosis will be known later today.

I┤m literally praying that t won┤t be torn ligaments (like goddess Pavlova), otherwise she can already say good bye to the London Olympics....

and mostly I hope they┤ll finally teach her good technique.

if its something serious it will shorten her career, her routines are packed with difficulty and having a weak knee will lower down her difficulty.

The sad thing is that she was such a good gymnast to watch, her character was amazing. This injury is one of the worst injuries you can get in gymnastics. Dobre suffered that injury too in 1988.

It will also disturb the Russian gymnastics again

you can find them already.

actually videos hve been uploaded very fast, Izbasa┤s floor, vault, Dementieva┤s beam were already uploaded literally 5 minutes after the finals ended :speakles: I┤m pretty sure its a gymnastics record.

Tweddle didn┤t have her best performance in bars final and her floor is Godawful, actually it was rather disapointing for me, had Nabieva connected her Nabieva into pak salto (as she was supossed to) she would have won the gold, most likely her only opporyunity to ever become bars champion and she blew it........ídamned it Tatiana! can never get one right with you:( :sobbing:

Sandra Izbasa's best friend is Irina-Camelia Begu. The two of them were deskmates in primary school:eek: . I knew Sandra used to play tennis but didn't know Irina was the reason

Irina was Sandra Izbasa's classmate, the woman of the moment in Romanian sport after winning two gold medals at the European Gymnastics Championships in Berlin.

"Irina Begu and Sandra Izbasa it's the hottest couple of girls in the history of the school where they learned. The two were deskmates from grade 1 to 4. Both are Steaua fans, often talk on the phone, see eachothers when they can, they are like twin sisters." Steluţa Begu

"I had no time for college, but after I finish my tennis career I'll start studying. I'll study physiotherapy at the National Academy of Physical Education, like Sandra", Irina said yesterday.

Svetlana Khorkina = LEGEND. People can say what they want, but her gymnastics history has already been written. When you look back at the entire sport, people will always note her for her contributions, her impact and her success. Plus, she is the last true star gymnastics produced. I doubt there is going to be another who so single-handedly defined the sport.

PS: If you don't know, my user name is obviously an homage to her. Shap_half is the shaposhnikova with a half turn, also known as the Khorkina transition from the low to high bar.

Yes, Mustafina is still recovering from her ACL injury. She should be good come next year though.

Komova is the top qualifier to bars finals by quite a few tenths. Huang Qiushuang from China is pretty good on bars too. Tatiana Nabieva can swing bars really well but she's taken out her signature move. Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber also made bars finals. But, Komova definitely has the best lines in the competition even though she's still so tiny.

I have to say that the Khorkina transition on bars looks much better done by Sveta with her legs spread. I understand the legs-together version is much difficult but it doesn't look more dynamic, which is what bars is all about. I don't think Sveta's spread legs looked less elegant, didn't disturb the lines of her performance. I think there's the added drama, too, of looking like she's flying between the bars.

That said, Komova looks amazing for worlds. I'm expecting a few gold medals from her in Tokyo.

I can't wait for Mustafina to come back next year stronger than ever and have a thoroughly dominating Russian team in London.

More on Komova: Boring on floor, really. Great explosive tumbling, but everything else is blah.

Really strong on beam. I have to say that the double turn is still one of my favorite moves there, but those side somersaults are so gross to look at. And I really wish these girls would come up with more interesting dismounts.

Does anyone know how much Sveta's final UB routine would be worth now? I'm so unfamiliar with the new code, but if I can still remember, the routine was,

Ricna + Pak + Stalder Full + Khorkina II
Stalder 1 1/2 + Markelov
Full In

Anyone on this? I know she also played around with many variations on a full-twisting double back dismount. I think she used all three: full-in, full-out, half-in half-out. All in tucked positions.

The top US gymnasts are Jordyn Wieber and Ally Raisman. They are definitely more in the Shawn Johnson mold of gymnasts. McKayla Maroney and Sabrina Vega are both beautiful gymnasts who made the World team and should be in the mix for London. Maroney has the world's best Amanar and is the favorite to win the World title on vault.

khorkina never sees the bars while catching after her release. All other gymnasts can see the high bar slightly before catching. It's a huge difference, and I think one of the reasons many gymnasts do variations of the Khorkina transition and not exactly the same transition.

Komova is such little goddess, hell yeah that┤s my girl!!! I get the impression that many people are getting carried away by this whole Weiber vs Vika thing and are forgeting how much of a big deal is what Komova did on prelims, the girl had like 2 months to train properly, with watered down routines and here she comes with basically all of her YOG difficulty, she is incredible, greatest talent the AG world has seen in ages, that beam routine is , her floor could be sooo much more and such a memorable routine, wished she were performing to the classical one all the song, with that class and those lines could have been absolutely perfect.
Proving that a Vika that is not doing the best of her capabilities could beat a Weiber doing full difficulty is simply amazing.:hearts::hearts:

Worlds was great. My thoughts:

- I prefer Komova, and think she should have won, but I don't have too much of a problem with Wieber winning.

- ... however I do think the Americans were very generously scored throughout.

- Sui Lu and Yao Jinnan were my favourites from worlds; Sui's BB was GORGEOUS and I like YJN's BB and FX. She's also very cute, and I get the Jiang Yuyuan comparison.

- I like Afanaseva, but think Sui Lu should have won floor.

- I am loving Russian gymnastics again; I wasn't such a fan in Athens/Beijing, but now with Komova, Mustafina, Grishina, Afan and Nabieva, they could have an amazing team next year.

- Chuso is a total LEGEND! :worship:

- The Romanians were a disaster

- I love Philipp Boy (see avatar!) and am thrilled he came 2nd.

- Kohei Uchimura is unbelievable and I hope he wins in London.

IMO she was clearly affected by her vault fall during her bars routine. She didn't seem to care in neither of her bars or beam routine. If she had known that she could redo the vault before her bars routine she might not have missed that Tkatchev. IIRC the judges told her she could redo her vault at the very end of the AA event. But yeah like you said she also fell in the team finals and messed up in the bars too at the 96 Olympics AA.

Karpenko's fall was pure choke. She tripped over her foot :tape:
But she needed a near perfect 10 in order to win anyway and it was highly unlikely to happen.

It's crazy how deep the talent pool was back then. There were 6-7 gymnasts who all had a legit shot at winning. It really was the last noteworthy Olympic AA final - 2004 was so bad that the shadow of Khorkina almost won and 2008 was a two-way race from start to finish.

I wish Karpenko won in Sydney. Not Sveta, not Raducan, not Amanar. Karpenko.

Sigh. 2000 was AWFUL, save for Liu Xuan winning beam.

I think the 2012 AA could be quite competitive

^Could well be. We could have any of Wieber, Komova, Mustafina, Grishina, Bross, Johnson, Jinnan, Ross, Raisman etc going for AA. Obviously only two per country, but still. Could be interesting (for the first time in ages)

They'll all be injured or have a meltdown, and Wieber and a random other American will fight for it.

What? Really?
I mean, she's not completely useless on bars and pre-2000 she's probably be an AA-er, but I doubt she can make a real breakthrough at this point.

It's ridiculous how much the Romanians have struggled on bars for more than a decade, Nistor notwithstanding. You'd think they'd do something about it, but nothing ever happens.

Gymnastics is on life support at this point. Komova is resting on pretty, but her bodyline is impeccable which helps a lot. She also knows how to move, at least. Afanasyeva's routine was very artistic but even it pales in comparison to the Soviets of old.

Here is a B-level Soviet in 1990. (I know I already posted this routine, but I love it so much and this is Saz at her absoulute best!)

R-y4OX8lLqY

This routine as performed would have won a World title. Ironically Saz made beam finals in 89 with a sadly simple routine.

Raducan jumped over the same vault.

And if Princess hadn't been too boo-hoo-woe-is-me over the vault, she would have kept her focus and not fallen down on the uneven bars, and hence have the chance to redo the vault and still win.
But Princess fell off the uneven bars in team finals too, so hm...

We would never know what would have happened if the vault was set on the right height. If you remember, Sveta hit both her vaults (stuck cold) in the team finals, too. When you consider the vault fiasco and the Raducan situation, I don't think most gymnastics follower even recognize that specific competition or its winner.

The Komova situation harkens me back to the 1997 Worlds where one of the biggest disputes in World Championship History judging happened during the Balance Beam Event Finals.

Kui Yuanyuan had one of the hardest beam routines ever, and only managed the bronze due to a tiebreaker rule which put her behind Khorkina.

Kui Yuanyuan is probably the best beam artist in history to never win gold at a worlds or olympics.

Last perfect "10" awarded at the Olympics! Rightly deserved! Milosovici was always a favorite of mine. Her, Shannon Miller and Henrietta Onodi were my favourites in the early 90s of women's gymnastics!

My favourite early 90s gymnast was Boginskaya. :worship: I would take a perfectly performed Boginskaya routine over just about any gymnast I can think of. If she just had a bit more of the technical side she would have been even more decorated than she already was. Milosovici and Onodi were great too. Onodi was so unique in her own way.

Gogean was severely overscored in those worlds. Kui should have won beam, Khorkina, floor.

Kui would have (and should have) won under today's COP. I think she made too many mistakes in that beam final to win gold. Gogean was always overscored on beam after she stopped doing a tumbling series. I would have given beam gold to Khorkina.

Technically Gogean and Khorkina did tie for first in floor finals. Gogean only won on a tie-breaker. I have no problem with them receiving the same score. Khorkina's tumbling was much easier and she didn't do any double saltos. It's a beautiful floor routine though. :hearts:

You mean this masterpiece?

I understand that it's not as explosive tumbling wise, but she was just stunning. I love that whip+double twist+full-twisting Shushunova combination. And have you seen a more graceful triple twist? It's just so elegant. Gogean did tumble her face off though. One of the highest double pikes I have ever seen on floor. She was practically straight up when she landed.

Yes, I love all of Khorkina's FXs even the Pulp Fiction one. Her 97 one was definitely one of her best though! I love the whip + double full + full-twisting Shushunova combination as well but it's not that hard. And mounting with a RO + ff + triple full is not impressive, regardless of how graceful it is. And I loved Gogean on floor as well. She could tumble her butt off but she also had good presentation. So I think it's fair that they tied.

Her 88 routine to Carmen that you posted used to be my favorite, but I don't even know anymore. I love every routine she had from 88-92. Also love the routine she used to win her 89 World title. I tried to teach myself the choreography.

She is such a legend: won EVERY individual event in the '90s Euros, came back in 1996 to place second AA at the Euros and countless other individual medals, I really think she would have been able to dominate further if the USSR didn't fall apart, but really one of my favorites of all time.

I love her floor most of all too, but I love her vaulting as well. Vaulting is my least favorite apparatus and is mostly something I view as necessary rather than something I enjoy. But she was actually a beautiful vaulter and I loved watching her do it. :inlove: She had such amazing form on it.

I always felt she was in the wrong era tbh. Having all the 80 pound pixies around her doing their huge tumbling passes, she often just looked so simple and basic in comparison. How were judges going to give her a Gold medal next to a Gutsu or Milosovici when they hit their routines, even if she was more classic and beautiful to watch.

The bigger problem is as the code changed, the general public (those who may not follow the sport but would watch major tournaments) are conditioned to think that big tumbling is what beautiful gymnastics is all about. Well-rounded gymnasts really need to manipulate the code to win -- like Khorkina and Liukin did. (Though I have to say if the code Liukin competed under was scored under a 10.0, I don't think she would have been able to overcome that other American.) Others like Pavlova and Boginskaya never got the hang of it and suffered.

The crowds are smarter than you give them credit for. They booed in Tokyo when the artistic gymnast, Komova, lost the AA to Wieber. And I love that gymnasts like Komova and Mustafina (and back in the day Lysenko) are artistic but they can still do difficult skills. They are truly well-rounded.

Well, maybe it's my Russian bias, but it was so obvious that Komova should have won that, because there really was nowhere that Wieber had her beat.

But if you showed a beautiful performance from Pavlova and put it against Patterson's tumble-fest, and they both performed clean routines, I would bet you that 8 out of 10 casual, Olympic viewers would award the win to Patterson. I'm not saying that she wouldn't deserve it, but the direction the sport is headed shows that all the importance is placed on tricks. That it's great to have dance and expression but those things are worthless without tricks. But the reverse isn't true at all.

Pavlova tumbles just as well as Patterson, if not better.

Maybe Pavs is a bad example as she really is an excellent gymnasts whose problem extend beyond tumbling. But even in 2004, Pavs' tricks didn't match up anywhere near as well as Carly's, judging wise. The only event where Pavs could potentially score higher is on vault. She never outscored Carly on floor or beam. And even on bars where fluidity is most required, Carly was outscoring Pavs. Pavs is obviously the "more beautiful" gymnasts performing "prettier" gymnastics, Carly didn't have an ounce of that in her body. And the judges had the nerve to further punish Pavs by stealing that bronze medal from her and giving it to one of the most ghastly gymnasts EVER.

Please compare these three's beam routines from that competition.

I like Carly's beam. She was very light on her feet and made every skill look effortless. She wasn't an artistic gymnast but what she did she did well. And her dismount was unique, innovative, and difficult. Plus she stuck it cold.

I love Anna on beam but there are several obvious flaws in her routine. Her Rulfova and triple full are both slightly cheated and she has her legs crossed on the dismount. She scored a 9.650, which I think is fair considering Carly got a 9.725 for an impeccable routine where nothing was cheated. And she only had a 9.7 SV on bars which really put her at a disadvantage.

Zhang Nan's score is too high, no doubt about it. She was definitely overscored on beam and floor and I wouldn't be surprised if politics were at play to secure her the bronze medal.

I would have had Patterson first, Pavlova second, Khorkina third.

Wow, when they did a close up of Carly's face I thought she looked just like Shawn Johnson. After Carly retired, she was on some FOX singing show and she had gained much weight.

That's one thing I hate about Gymnastics. Their shelf life is like one Olympics and the top people always retire after they win the Gold.
