Można powiedzieć: do trzech razy sztuka.

Zaskoczyło to Panią?

- Zostały nam egzaminy z fizjologii i prawa. Mam nadzieję, że w przyszłym tygodniu zdamy je i rozpoczniemy drugi rok.

You always choose bad tournaments to watch. :p
Magda didn't play Bratislava as they prefered to play in Opole and now I don't think any of sisters will play Brussels as Aga would rather rest after Madrid and Rome and Ula will play RG quallies. ;)

Wow, that Barrois was tough. It looked like after Aga was broken in first set, she realized her rival isn't just #79 and then played with full focus. Generally very good match. :yeah:

I'm very happy Aga will play with Karolina in SF. Same story as with Schiavone. Aga should play her more and more to finally not only beat Woźniacka, but, what's more important, to find a proper way to regular wins.

I am a little sad, too. There is perhaps a technical progress as everyone is saying. She also fights hard at times and is not as passive which is good. It is time, however, to up her game. I think she has what she needs to beat anyone and she shouldn't be regularly beaten by anyone. I so hope that the time when she seriously steps up comes up soon.

I see the comments are positive. Indeed the score, though Agnieszka lost, looks respectable. Watched only till 4-4 and I liked Aga's game. I only worried how long she would survive playing this way. Was Aga much exhausted in the end or did she change her game to not run so much? Almost 2 hours against human wall can be deadly even for ones physically stronger than Aga.

Losing a close match to the best player in the world at the moment is not a shame. Now Aga needs to deduce from this loss and prepare herself for a better match next time. :yeah:

Corswandt on Ula's match
U. Radwanska d. Sevastova 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-1

From 2-1 in the first. I took a lot of game-by-game notes from this (the second set was rich in incidents on that regard), but I won't bore you with them as this was on livestream.

General consensus at the match score thread among those who followed the livestream seems to be that Sevastova player very poorly, but I don't agree. It's just that she always struggles when facing a player who doesn't miss anything like U-Rad because she isn't consistent enough to outlast them in rallies and not powerful enough to hit through them without first having to work the point, hitting several good shots to open up the court. Sometimes she tries to break the stalemate by going to the net, but even though she's quite good up there for 2011 WTA standards, against U-Rad today she found herself time and again getting pwned by a much more agile player with better hands (actually, it's unsurprising that she got pwned so hard in all the touch shots exchanges as that's pretty much what Clan Radwanska does for a living).

I'm always impressed by Sevastova's serve - it's just about as good as it could be considering her size. It has become very reliable, has some very good pop in it, and is always well placed, be it 1st or 2nd - she can hit every corner of the service box with it. It bailed her out on a number of occasions throughout the first set.

What struck me as subpar for her usual standards on this match were ROS (even though U-Rad does have a good, very solid 1st serve, it's certainly not like Gajdosova's, so there was no reason for her to earn a couple of free points off it in nearly every service game she played), tactics (she wasn't working the points from the baseline well; she took a while to realise that she shouldn't let herself get dragged into endless CC BH rallies but to exploit U-Rad's weaker FH side, sometimes with topspin FHs, and that she had to take risks with her BH DTL, and only began doing so late in the first set), and her net game (see paragraph above).

Throughout the match, Sevastova's peculiar brand of controlled aggression would only work if she played it flawlessly, such was U-Rad's consistency.

As for U-Rad, she was extremely consistent from the baseline, and even though only her CC BH has some bite in it, her horrific FH held for the most, and she managed to counterpunch effectively on occasion.

The first set was subpar, and even in its latter and more dramatic stages I found the play from both was too often sloppy (Sevastova would sometimes stop moving her feet before hitting her FH for no apparent reason and it would fly long, and U-Rad's FH also provided a fair share of errors). Sevastova took it largely on account of playing the decisive points better.

End of the first set, medical timeout for U-Rad.

The early second set again saw some poor play from both, and Sevastova's ROS was so ineffective she never really managed to contest U-Rad's service games. Sevastova often found herself down on her own service games, but either good serving or confident, assertive controlled aggression bailed her out.

The second half of the second set was tightly contested and of high quality from both players. Quite entertaining, even though there were very few spectators in attendance, and none seemed to be into this match at all. Sevastova, despite being the defending champion, got no love from the crowd, which sort of reflects her popularity in here.

As you all know, U-Rad wasted two SPs at 5-4*, and Sevastova got broken when serving for the match. Oddly enough, Sevastova didn't miss a single return on the TB, which hints that she was too lackadaisical or overconfident with her return game until then.

The third set went more or less how you'd expect. U-Rad was missing even less than her sister, while hitting closer to the lines than A-Rad would ever hit, and considering that in the previous set Sevastova was playing at her best level and still couldn't take it, the predictable dip in her confidence and spirit as a consequence of losing the second set the way she did could only lead to a blowout in the third. The third set was U-Rad's show; Sevastova was forced to go more and more for the lines and to play flawlessly to win each and every point, and the result was that she won few of them.

Day 4 - Wednesday - MD 2R

Johanna Jenny Larsson d. U. Radwanska 6-4, 6-4

An old Swedish lady in attendance looked at my red clipboard and asked "So are you writing a novel or is that about the match?"

I don't know to what extent this match can be used as evidence in the "Johanna Jenny - useless challenger level hack or good #40-60 range player?" debate that rages on in TF.

From the first time I saw her play, I always thought Johanna Jenny has an unusual game (for a WTA player) that is well suited to slower surfaces. She's lightly built, but swings her whole body into the ball when hitting a FH, with great body rotation. She slides OK into her FH, and is fairly good mover on clay, which allowed her not to make too many loose errors. Her BH is no frills, with very simple technique, but is fairly solid (somewhat reminiscent of Wickmayer's groundstrokes on that regard), at least in the mid to low pace rallies being played today. Her BH slice, which she uses often when under pressure, is dependable - very slow but accurate. She can't return aggressively because she can't take the ball early. Her service motion is quite explosive, with good racquethead speed, but doesn't look quite textbook; her serve actually won her very few free points today (then again this is clay), and wasn't particularly reliable. She can play 1-2 first strike tennis when it clicked though - which wasn't often today. Her forward movement is good, and, unlike Sevastova, she reached quite a few of U-Rad's droppers, and fared considerably better on touch shot exchanges, largely on account of her agility and pugnatiousness.

The first 2-3 games saw Johanna Jenny hammering U-Rad's FH side with topspin FH bombs and stepping inside the court to punish anything that landed short. Sevastova didn't have much to really exploit U-Rad's abomination of a FH, but Johanna Jenny has that FH loaded with vicious spin (for this level - this isn't Shanksur's FH) that she used to mess up U-Rad's brittle timing, and for the rest of the match U-Rad's main concern was not to allow her to bring it to bear - in which she was mostly successful, but unfortunately for her not when it really mattered.

The outcome of the match depended entirely on Johanna Jenny and her ability to bring her FH to bear, as she won nearly every rally in which she was allowed to do so. U-Rad on the other hand held serve as a matter of course, even though she doesn't really serve bombs (she does toss the ball well inside the court and throws herself into it quite well) and Johanna Jenny returned better than Sevastova. U-Rad's FH is so lacking in pace and depth at times that it almost works as an unintentional dropshot - Johanna Jenny made a few errors trying to return those.

Thing is, even though U-Rad is often a superb retriever and always so consistent, and forces her opponents to play at a consistently high level as she almost never plays two bad points in a row, she also never raises her game on the decisive points. She either allowed Johanna Jenny to play her game and bully her around with her FH or made costly random errors on apparently routine groundstrokes.

Johanna Jenny by contrast seems to be a good match player - she won a few important points mostly with defense (including the first set's SP). Then again U-Rad can't really crank it up from the baseline with her useless FH and her counterpuncher pace BH.

The second set featured Johanna Jenny again saving a shitload of BPs with gutsy play. Down a game and 0-15 on her serve, she won the rally of the tournament so far, displaying astonishing resourcefulness on the defense. By the end of the set she was showing some signs of physical and mental fatigue, and got tight when serving out the match, but again U-Rad failed to take advantage of it.

Sidekick Engzell showed up briefly near the end of the match to check how her countrywoman was doing.

Few words about serving. Today everyone could see how meaningless is serve in women's tennis. Aga did it great today, but it didn't matter because she was worse in rallies. So far in her career Aga didn't serve well, but was winning matches in rallies.

Be more precise as I don't know what to response.
I think what he means is that he disagrees with the fact that serve means nothing. I have to agree with him, serve is important element, but you will not win a match on it alone while you can compensate for it with the rest of the game. I think Agnieszka just dropped the level of her game raising serve only. Perhaps it is so new to her that it overtook her brain. This is why I wrote earlier that perhaps it is getting worse before getting better. I am just hoping that she will step on the court with a more complete game: serve+what she was already doing well.

what are you both talking about? how come do you want one match to be a proof of any kind of thesis, let alone that deeply wrong one. serve doesn't mean anything in women's tennis?????? u nuts? even if you were right that Radwanska was serving very well today (which I'm gonna verify wrong later) it doesn't mean that serve didn't help her. And hell it doesn't mean serve is unimportant in women's game  Go and tell that to Serena Williams, and after you do, to Elena Dementieva. It only means that Aga would have lose even easier if not for her serve. And for god's sake if someone is serving well and losing the match, it doesn't mean that serve doesn't exist, it means they did some other things wrong. puh-lease, no logic :sobbing:

That would be the case, providing that Aga were really serving brilliantly but only losing the points in rallies. But hell, have you watched it attentively? this match was ALL ABOUT THE SERVE. To cut the long story short, about the 2ND SERVE. There were hardly any rallies, in 3rd set Gajdosova won 15/17 on Aga's 2nd serve. And that's the only story to be told here. Aga's 2nd serve was so piss poor, that it just served as a practice ball for Jarmila, who was hitting winners of virtually every one of them in 3rd set. But even that said, this match was even more about the serve. Agnieszka hit 10 aces there, and was having service winners in every game she had. That is remarkable, and truth be told this is the only way she was winning points there - after 1st serve. Partially becasue Jarmila Gajdosova is probably the worst returner in the top 100 (Safarova would be no 2), going for Lisicki-like returns on Aga 1st all the time, which was completely unnecessary. That is also why Aga managed to get 10 aces from her (so did Kirilenko yesterday). Even it the 2nd set she won, Jarka only took 19% points after Aga 1st serve. In third, Aga was broken in a game, where she never got a 1st serve in a box, doesn't that tell anything? Aga did exceptionally well on return though, making it competitive in most of Jarka's game by hitting long returns that didn't automatically put Groth in winning position. When Jarka is out of her comfort zone (mostly, after she hits a mediocre return) she is very vulnerable.

So, I have no idea in hell, how can you argue that not only serve doesn't mean much in women's game, but even more, that serve didn't play an important role in today's match.

fouc
May 4th, 2011, 12:32 AM
and I don't think Aga's ground game deteriorated. It was like it always is against such hard hitters on a good day and on clay. She was poor, but it is because she was serving shitty 2nd serve, and couldn't find herself in good position returning. When a basher and server like Jarka is having a very good day, there is really not much to be done.

dunno where you got the stats from but in third set Jarka won 10/12 on Aga's 2nd serve...

and the biggest problem for Aga is her weak 2nd serve.
these stats show that serve is important!

1st set
1st serve % 79%
1st won 15/23 = 65%
2nd won 3/6 = 50%

2nd set
1st serve % 57%
1st won 13/16 = 81%
2nd won 4/12 = 33%

3rd set
1st serve % 61%
1st won 12/19 = 63%
2nd won 2/12 = 17%

so if you ask me, serve is important in tennis, even in Aga's games ;)

no DFs doen't mean that your serve is perfect...

work with second serve gurl!

I never said serve is unimportant, but that it is only one of many elements of the game and as any of the elements can be compensated by others if it doesn't work. As far as todays match goes a few observations
1. Agnieszka is making great progress on her 1st serve (this can be seen in more matches lately)
2. Agnieszka is tentative on her 2nd serve, especially today. It often occurds concurently with problem stated below
3. Agnieszka was very passive today; it could be seenin the 3rd set the most.

Maybe the word "meaningless" I used was wrong as I rather meant less importance comparing to "the rest of the game". Most fans and commentators glorify serving, forgetting it has less influence on the game than in ATP. In WTA a break isn't any serious advantage and the percentage of points with serve impact is less significant. Of course it's not "completely meaningless", it can improve the game if the rest is ok, help in important points, save in the moments of danger, but it won't win the match alone. Even Serena Williams, given as an example of great server (there are so few of them in WTA that any general theories about serve in women's tennis based on them are fake), having bad serving day can win the match because of great ground game and will be in serious problems on a day being shitty in everything except serve. Don't tell me Aga's losing to Williams sisters is mainly because they serve better. They also dominate the rallies (I call such points that in some moment are even, not influenced of serve/return, any player can take the initiative). The percentage of serve/rallies is different for different players, with (almost) always advantage of rallies and for huge majority of players the difference is significant. I used to make such stats for Aga's matches against top players and I don't remember them exect, but the matter always was if Aga wins rallies or not, regardless of her and her rival's serving.

Good the discussion has started, because it will help to find right direction of improving. I'm not against working on serve, good serve (as for Aga) will always be welcome. But because of her physical conditions she will never be a great server. Her area of improvemnt are rallies. For that she needs more power, but it's a topic for other discussion.

Fouc, if you want to prove me Aga wasn't serving well yesterday, let it be, I won't argue here. It was my subjective observation and it looked better compared to what I used to see in past. AndreConrad pointed Aga's passiveness in the game and that's in my opinion the main reason why she lost. That's what she has to focus on in matches at this moment of her career, with her current skills and capabilities. If she didn't even serve that "well", the discussion "she lost despite..." has no sense.

Obviously her serve wasn't the only reason why she lost. When it comes to her last match Aga's 1st serve was great but her 2nd serve was just beyond bad. As fouc said Jarka killed it every time in the 3rd set basically getting free winners out of it. I have no idea why Agnieszka didn't take any risk on that 2nd serve. After all she had ZERO double faults while her serve was basically destroyed.

There is pressure on him and girls to finally make visible progress. Eveyone tells him to work more in gym. For years he didn't want to make it too quickly to not risk with daughters' health. Maybe finally he started to work harder with them and now we have injury fest. Just my guess.

W poniedziałek rano bezpośrednim lotem z Krakowa rodzina Radwańskich odlatuje do Paryża, gdzie we wtorek zaczynają się kwalifikacje do Rolanda Garrosa, drugiego w roku turnieju Wielkiego Szlema.

- To będzie niezwykle otwarty turniej.

Urszula przegrała w I rundzie z Belgijką Yaniną Wickmayer, Agnieszka - w II rundzie z Jarosławą Szwedową z Kazachstanu. Starsza z sióstr, triumfatorka juniorskiego Rolanda Garrosa z 2006 r., najdalej doszła w 2008 i 2009 r., osiągając 1/8 finału. Urszula jeszcze czeka na pierwszy wygrany mecz.

Was she injured? Ugh I can't believe she lost this :( To be honest, I didn't think she would qualify but I expected her to win a match or two.

No, or at least she didn't look injured. Only frustration, and her father who was telling to her "Gramy!" when she was angry ;) Maybe she was injured, but I don't think so.

Pics are coming, I have to prepare them a little before publishing (one picture = 5MB, and I don't want to kill your Internet connexion ^^).
