Seeing as you made a thread I'll mention in here that Mirjana is on at 10.00am today in Charleston against Morita in the 1st round. No idea what to expect but if she turns up ready to play I've no doubt she can win.

If she can hit less than 5 double faults, I'll be happy. Really not expecting a win at this point

If you don't like Lucic, stop posting here. It doesn't seem like you know anything about her and know what she has been going through otherwise you would have been a bit more respectful to her.
It is allready pretty amazing that she is on the court again, enjoying tennis and life and can actually play WTA tournaments. Her comeback is a great and inspirational story.

Ofcourse it's not going well this year so far, but she can bounce back again. We all know that she had much tougher challenges to face in her life.

Well put. The fact that she is even playing WTA main draws with direct acceptances is something we should all be proud of her to have accomplished. A year ago we would have only dreamed of that happening. Regarding her schedule, she probably feels she has earned the right to play these WTA main tour events and wants to take advantage of that. But, she probably should have sprinkled in some challengers to ensure she got some points in case she didn't fare well in the WTA draws. She still has those two European clay events coming up to get some points. I noticed there is no WTA tournament next week. Maybe she could try to get a wildcard to some challenger at the last moment to get some points.

Anyone wondering how Miki is feeling right now should take a bit of heart, she's frustrated but not discouraged and still confident. She has been saying how the hard work will not go to waste and how she picks herself up again every time she's down, so fighting talk!

I think they use next week's rankings to determine main draw acceptance for Roland Garros so looks like Miki is pretty sure of playing her 4th grand slam main draw in a row.

Thank you! That's heartening to hear. And yeah, as others have been saying too, she has picked herself back up many times from much worse slumps than this one. She's amazing that way. :worship:
I'm really looking forward to her next ride upward, and I hope she knows she has fans out here who still believe in her chances to make 2011 her best tennis year yet.

Great chance for Mirjana to qualify for PGP, with an opener against Diyas, a wc newbie in the wings, possibly, and Hampton likely to be her biggest obstacle. Best of luck to her ... Go, Miki! She can absolutely still get a great season going; her clay court skills are underrated and she moves/slides well on the red dirt.

Focus is the key. Make it happen out there, kid~

Apr 15th, 2011, 04:12 PM
diyas is very tough...tougher than hampton imo
really hope miki has found some form

ajmo!
Apr 15th, 2011, 04:16 PM
This is fast clay as it's indoors, it could be good for Miki. Diyas is good young player. After all she demolished Jankovic 6-1 6-2 last year.
Good luck Mirjana! :yeah:

Zarina is definetely not going to be a walk in the park. Last year she lost to Nara in 3 tight sets and I watched it all until 1:25 AM. :o
I am so happy I get the opportunity to see Mirjana live. :inlove: I will skip Fed Cup, if it's played at the same time.

mikireturns
Apr 15th, 2011, 06:15 PM
Yes, Diyas is tough, but her win over JJ last year (while exciting) was mitigated by JJ being, well ...JJ on a bad day. Miki also lost a three-setter to pesky little Nara last year (a heartbreaker Miki really should have won), so I think on this unique indoor clay surface she can definitely outfox Diyas if she utilizes all her experience and grits it out. It's time to get herself revved-up. Lots of opportunties to at least get herself in form to make some kind of run in Paris, if not sooner. I have a hunch that the red clay and being in Europe will inspire her. So long as she does her best, and knows she is doing her best, that is what matters most.

mikireturns
Apr 15th, 2011, 06:19 PM
Also, by the by, a milestone was achieved my Miki this past week. Finally, she crossed the $1,000,000 mark in prize-money for her career! I have a feeling not too many people in the tennis world ever thought that would happen for her, three or four years ago when she was circling. Could be a good omen for the rest of her season!

ajmo!
Apr 15th, 2011, 06:27 PM
Yes, it's not like she has all that money but it's a nice thing to cross that line.
I have a good feeling for Stuttgart, at least that she'll do better than she's done all this year.

And I do hope she starts to play doubles soon. I don't get it. Does she even think about playing London Olympics? I have a feeling she could do great in doubles and also in mixed doubles. It would be great if she and Ljubo could play together.

LUCIC, Mirjana CRO v DIYAS, Zarina KAZ
WITTHOEFT, Carina GER v VRLJIC, Ana CRO
BRENGLE, Madison USA v KUCOVA, Kristina SVK
EVTIMOVA, Dia BUL v HAMPTON, Jamie USA

Perfect draw to qualify for Stuttgart main draw. Mirjana clearly is the best player in this section, no doubt. But would not be surprised if she bombs out in Q1. Hope Mirjana is motivated to be back in Germany again! And plays her best tennis!

Viel Glück, Mirjana! :bounce:

Most disheartening, again. Mirjana is not going out there against brutal Top 10 killers, she is being routinely thrashed by journeywomen who are not even in the Top 100.

Worse, she is giving points away by the bucketload, on her actual serves via double-faults, on her return-of-serve (which has been as bad or worse than her serves), and the inability to participate in anythng remotely resembling a rally. Getting killed by Meusbergers and Diyases. Not against Zvonerevas or Wozniackis.

She works hard, but one would have to posit that, mentally, she is stunningly unprepared to compete at all these days. This doesn't bode well, obviously.

If one looks at the results across her entire career, the pattern is obvious. She is a confidence player. A streaker. When she has confidence she wins matches in bunches and/or competes well, when she does not have confidence, she flails and flounders. No in between for this girl.

It's mental. Tennis is a rough sport for someone who is mentally questionable as a competitor and who is not a grinder.

4/16 sets. 4 sets, that's all she won this year. And it's really a great decision to withdrawn from challenger and go and play Madrid, Rome...
Problems are HUGE! I was never a pessimist, but this is really bad. She clearly has no confidence at all.

I think it's clear to anyone with sense that she simply doesn't have it, anymore, if she ever really had "It" at all. Last year was so encouraging and full of promise. It wasn't pretty most of the time, but at least she rose to challenges and found ways to grit out all sorts of matches.

With all of the points she has to defend in the next six months, nothing short of a tennis miracle can save her career.

As was pointed out succinctly earlier:

"She worked so hard to get back to the Tour. Now she's back and she sucks."

Yep. That last game was beyond unacceptable, and very indicative of her inability to compete anymore. I wish her the best.

Maybe she'll go all the way to the semifinals of the French Open, guys.

On a less critical note, I hope someone is with her to give her a big hug. She cannot be feeling good at all right now. Losing so badly for months on end ruins players of all levels.

I honestly don't think she would do that much better in Challengers, at this juncture. She has had, let's face it, really really good draws all year, given her Top 100 status. Her opponents have been Challenger-level opponents.

I think that, after the monumental effort of 2010 (for which she should be applauded absolutely) she is burned out and she will hang it up sometime this season and move on, unless something amazing happens to change that. Life beckons for her elsewhere. I'd rather see her happily married and getting into something else in life than getting her ass kicked by juniors.

Challengers suck. That's why she doesn't want to play them, and I don't blame her. With a few exceptions, they are ill-staged, embarrassing events (although the tennis you see at them is often better and ore interesting than tour-level!).

Mirjana fought to get out of those hell-holes last year, she did so, and by all means ought to have been prepared to make some impact on the regular Tour, especially with these draws she has been seeing.

It's not as if she is losing to Wozniackis or Zvonerevas out there. She's losing to Challenger-level girls. Badly.

Mirjana would not be going overseas unless she still believed in her game, so there is that positive point. But I do not believe she will return to Challengers, ever. That's over, for her.

If she can't make this work after positioning herself for Tour-level competition, she will accept it and move on in life. But the first months of this year have been her opportunity to either make it work, or at least be competitive. She is not even being competitive out there, against Challenger-level girls in Tour quallies.

Only at the end of the year will I say it is TOTALLY over for her. Mirjana is a weird one. She could get some bee in her bonnet and go all the way to the quarters in Paris next month, or the same at Wimbledon.

But it isn't likely. We will always have 2010. And so will she.

Keep in mind, looking at the results of her entire career ... if she gets just one hot streak going she can do incredible things.

I hope she will have one more of those before she finishes the game (which will be at the end of the year if she continues to play like this). One big run at a major event. That would make her so happy and she could retire knowing she managed to get a run like that.

I still believe this much is possible for her, and remain proud of her for just getting back to the Top 100. Don't know what she is doing now to totally screw-up her big chance, but remain proud she got there, at least.

Let us send her all good thoughts possible for Paris and Wimbledon (though I wonder if she will be safe for the Wimbledon main draw?)

I think she has to win few matches in following weeks to get into Wimbledon MD. Also, if she makes big run at a slam I don't think she would retire then. She would probably make another one on a following slam. Fingers crossed. Nothing's lost. Many chances are still out there for Miki. All she has to do is play good tennis.

Mirjana didn't even look that bad. Once she was in the zone Diyas didn't know what had hit her, but for every winner there were three straight errors. Mirjana won most of the longer rallies, but she had to get into the rally, because she doesn't make it past the second ball very often. :o Her serve looked alright and so did her net game. She had some chances, but errors were out there, when they were needed the least.
Yet I have to give credit to Diyas, who managed to neutralise Mirjana's power at times and damn she has a great serve given how small she is.
But Mirjana should play some International qualifying or something. It will not work that way. I sill dream that she will play DOubles here. :awww: I got pics of her but jsut with my phone. :o

Wow! Even though it was not a good result, glad you got to see her play in person. She really does have a big, bad game, especially when you see her hit in person, huh?

If this is what's going on now in her game (winning long rallies but screwing-up the first few shots in the equation) then she is not thinking well out there. One thing that I noticed in most all of her matches last year was a very focused ability to take her time and hit at mid or 3/4 pace to begin the rallies and then turn on the POW! as rallies progress and close points effectively. Such a shame, because she can still compete even when her serve is "iffy", if her strokes are in order. It appears Jeff Russell, her usual coach, is not with her on this trip. She really relied on him and drew a lot of good stuff from him last year. He was a calming influence in her game and personality, getting her to slow down and stop rushing.

Oh, Miki. Find your way out of this. Dig yourself into these matches.

If this is indeed the main problem in her game - rushing and going for too much too early in a point- than all hope is not lost. This type of problem is fixable. It's easier to reign something in than not to have it in the first place. Even last year, she would go for too much on the return of serve, especially the second serve - she'd overhit and lose the point on the first shot. With her power, all she really has to do is get a safe return in play, then boss the rally from there. We all know this, she probably even knows it. I just think her instinct is to go for it on EVERY shot. Tennis is largly about percentages and if you hit hard on every shot you're going to have some spectacular winners, but these will be outweighed by Unforced errors.

Very true -- all of it. Mirjana seemed to have a much greater ability to temper her power with a bit of patience last year, especially on clay. Her hard hitting "go for every shot" style of game has always been high-risk in the extreme. It would be the same for Sharapova, who plays a similar game, but who has much more confidence than Miki. If you have confidence, those big shots can tend to stay in on the first few exchanges in a rally. Her return game is just disastrous when she's off (free points everywhere for her opponent), but it was coming together last year. Mirjana has had few "confident streaks" in her career to be employing the type of game she brings to the court. Streaky results. It is a shame she never got a chance to afford the sort of world-class coaching that might have given her a few little tricks to be more of a self-starter on the confidence thing. I believe Harold Solomon worked with her once and had a lot of faith that her talent would carry her far. Alas, she could not afford to have him travel with her. Hopefully she finds a bit of patience and renewed focus so that the season does not become one big disaster. She can still pull a rabbit out the hat, I think.

At this point, I would rather see her in main draws with the chance to get bigger points by "pulling a win out of nowhere" than itty-points in qualifying, because she isn't winning matches in qualifying. One good win to jolt her confidence is all she needs, I believe.

She hasn't been doing well against lower-ranked players, and Mirjana always warms to the challenge of showing her best against top players. This, again, is a fabulous chance to do something she has not yet done in her comeback: beat a Top 40 WTA player.

Mirjana has some fine clay skills, if she can execute. How wonderful it would be if she digs deep within herself and finds the will (and game) to score the big upset. Anyone can beat anyone in tennis on any given day. Hopefully her day has come.

Glad she's finally in the doubles. Long overdue (but it has been difficult for her to find access to the dubs). Tough doubles team in the first round, but those two ought to be intimidated by big hitting -- Meagan M-L, especially, is so itty bitty. She makes the Japanese players look like skyscrapers.

Best of luck to La Lucic.

And she did it in straight sets in a season where she was anything but good. This has to be an amazing feeling for her.
After all, she hasn't won a match against a top 50 player in many years.

Hercog is a great player on clay when she's in form. Clay is actually the only surface where she can play good tennis. Her shots are not big but she plays smart tennis and sometimes wins points when you don't expect it at all. But I watched her in Fed Cup and she didn't seemed as good as last two years, but she managed to defeat both Canadians. I now have two images of Polona, one where she took a set 6-2 to Venus and one where she's a player without big weapon.
She's not stronger than Mirjana, if Mirjana can keep the ball in court, with the power she has Hercog could be beaten.

Brilliant news! Finally the result we have all been (let's face it) groaning for. And what a result. Makarova is undeniably a quality player, the No. 4 seed, and the first Top 40 player Mirjana has beaten since --wait for it -- Weingartner in the 1st Round of Roland Garros 2001!Weingartner was also ranked No. 38 at the time.

Makarova is a much more formidable player than Weingartner ever was. I am especially thrilled with Mirjana's return stats. She really brought the goods in that department, so she must have had a good look within and brought a great deal of extra focus to the match. Moreover, this shows everyone (and her) that hard work pays dividends.

I don't care what has been going on inside her head lately -- this must feel absolutely thrilling for her and is the biggest quality win of her entire comeback (2007-present). Best of all, it clears an enormous mental/statistical hurdle that she has, until now, been unable to clear. For all of her fine work last year she could not snag that key confidence win over one of the big players (Top 50). Now, she has proved that she can do it in the "here and now".

Mirjana Lucic beats Top 40 and No. 4 Seed in a WTA Event. We could not say that last year and neither could she.

Now everyone can. I hope like hell she gets some press about this, for potential sponsors to take note. More work to do, but what a breakthrough. The win she needed.

With her obviously emotional inner-life, confidence is everything for Miki and now she has got it.

Hope she just goes out there and keeps having great fun with the doubles and her next opponent(s).

I'm thrilled for Mirjana that she won, earning 30 helpful points and more than $3,000. Also, another loss would have been terrible for her (and her fans).

That said, I feel worse about this win than I have about some of her losses. Yes, Makarova is top 40 but by all accounts she spent last night very ill. Despite that, Mirjana managed to make the scoreline too close for comfort. I shudder to think what the score would have been if Makarova had been in full health.

It appears to me that Mirjana's very shaky form continues. I'll be shocked--and also thrilled--if she manages to beat Hercog. If she does win, it'll be fantastic, her first WTA QF in who knows how many years. Also, whoever wins has a very good shot at the semis. The other seed in the quarter (Zahlavova Strycova) lost, so the winner will play either Craybas or Pous-Tio.

Wishing you the very best of luck tomorrow, Mirjana!

Since Hercog is a regular doubles partner of another Croat (Petra Martic), many of us here know quite a lot about her form and results lately. And well, her form this year is nowhere near where it can be when she's on, but still, she's a really good and experienced player. What could be important today though, is that Hercog injured her wrist last week, so on top of some really crappy 2011 form, she's got that to worry about as well. Of course, the fact that she's playing this week shows that injury wasn't serious, but it could be some additional distraction for Hercog.

Anyway, it'll be an interesting day for Miki because of a double program, which is nice to see. Her partner shows some good form too, so Miki might advance beyond R1 in doubles as well. Hope that win against Makarova injected some confidence back into her (although it's just one win) and that she'll be ready to take her chances today, if she gets them. It would be even nice if she could create them by playing some quality tennis.

Best of luck to her!

Well, Hercog quit with her coach after AOpen, then was working with Tkalec but lately she has new coach and she said that they understand each other well.
Anyway, match will start soon. Hercog to serve first.

I don't get it. I guess Mirjana just can't read the serve or she's totally off.
