But she only has herself to blame, not playing aggressive tennis when leading and let her opponent gets back in the match.

I still how wonder, how she beat Vinci with that score in Birmingham...
Since then she could only beat Thorpe in a three setter.

mikireturns
Jul 5th, 2011, 11:44 AM
I really have to question my interest in her game henceforth. I have never seen a more ridiculous choke since the days of Novotna in big finals. And this was a piddly 1st round match in a backwater WTA event. And Cirstea gave her the second set on break.

Truly, the worst mental fart I have ever smelled in years and years of tennis viewing. Almost surreal in its badness. Time to convert to Kvitova, perhaps.

(it reminds me to medina gariggues match) well, first set and finnal set she served for winning them... she couldn't keep her composure... ok, it is one match as somebody said about loosing to cibulkova at wimbledon but this maches counts also, not winning-no points so... if she continues loosing this kind of matches she's not gonna be in the top 50 this year... i need to recover from this guys...

It's crazy.. Mirjana's playing a lot better tennis than she played last year.
And yet she's soon probably gonna drop in rankings and now we call her choker, last year we were saying fighter.
From fighter to choker.

Just remember last year how she defeated Parmanetier after being down 2 breaks in third and losing like 10 games in a row. And in US Open QR1 she saved something like 4 MP's.
She was down MP's against Sprem etc.

And it's not just Cirstea now.. It's Cirstea, Cibulkova, Makarova, Medina...

From fighter to choker!

Get it together Miki, you clearly can play TOP50 tennis.

Hmm, is this your 3rd such pronouncement this year, or is it the 4th? ;) You'll be back once you get a little distance from today's horror show.

Look, people, following an erratic player like Mirjana is always going to be a wild rollercoaster ride. Sure, every player has good days and bad days, but when Mirjana is good she is so very, very good, yet when she is bad, she is, well, horrid. :tape:

Okay, so last week was a mixed bag, today was just horrid, so next week she is due to be very, very good again. In any case I'm along for the ride, but I'm sure not going to set any expectations for any one particular match. I'm just looking for the overall upward trend to continue, slowly and erratically as always with this lady. At least no one can say she's boring! ;)

I look at it this way. She is playing better tennis overall. That's why she is the one leading these matches. In the matches you mentioned from last year, she was behind and it was a combination of her fight and the other players choking that resulted in her wins. Now, she is the one ahead near the end and is the one choking. So, she is putting herself in the winning position, just not closing the deal. Let's face it, it's way less pressure playing from behind than ahead. Who's to say if she got way behind in a match now, she wouldn't fight and come back. She could. She just hasn't been in that position much lately.

good post. I think MikiReturns is right in that she may need a break. Not a long break, but maybe skip Palermo and regroup for the U.S. hardcourts. Miki has been playing every week since she flew over to Europe in April for Stuggard qualifying. That's 2.5 months of playing each week. Some weeks she lost in the first match, but she has still played each and every week since mid April. She could be a little burnt out. I'm not saying that is soley responsible for her total mental breakdown today, but it may be a factor.

Words of wisdom, AJ, and all true, but for my part, the problem is not in following an erratic player, it is the very real and disturbing discomfort that comes with following a player who has clearly got the yips, i.e. who is a chronic choker, or becoming one. I think Ajmo! had a great point, too, in noting that Mirjana clawed her way through huge obstacles last year while possessing little of the weaponry she has got this year.

The fact remains that she is in trouble with this serial choking thing. She is squandering leads in all sorts of games, matches, points, etc. Big games, little games, big players, little players. The choke-results are easier to stomach when we cannot see her matches, but when an abortion like the one we saw today is live-streamed in living color, it really brings home the fact that she is suffering yips like few I have ever seen. She needs to fix it, fast, because yips like that spell the END.

I could not believe my eyes. We all saw her in total control, Cirstea was mincemeat, and that match ought to have been 6-3 6-2 for Mirjana, or, at the very least, 5-7 6-3 6-2. She has had a string of these collapses, now, and this one is by far the worst, given her highest ranking in a decade, the wide-open draw before her, and an opponent who was not only beatable, but virtually beaten. The death knell in this match was when Mirjana was in complete cruise control in the third set and she broke her concentration/focus to pointlessly question that Cirstea ace down the T. It was absolutely the wrong thing to do. She lost all control of her serve, head, feet, strokes after that and won only a handful of points. Perhaps that sort of behavior is key to her problem, and her coach had best take note.

DON'T BREAK YOUR CONCENTRATION FOR TOTALLY FRIVOLOUS REASONS WHEN YOU ARE CRUISING, MIRJANA!

She might benefit from a sports psychologist. Breathing exercises. Visualization. Whatever. Yips like hers need to be dealt with, pronto.

Mirjana always get my vote and my best wishes (I find it hard to believe that people could not root for this girl, who has been through so much and has come so far). But yips are repellent. If she were merely lacking match-play, or spraying balls because she is under-trained, or getting beaten fair & square, it is one thing. Choking/Yips are quite another, from the spectator/fan perspective.

I hope she gets it together because this is such a great opportunity. All the components/weapons for a serious run into the Top 50 are THERE. It would be a shame if her head needlessly prevented further advancement at this juncture. Disturbing trend from our beloved Mirjana. I am also put-off by the way she threw the racket toward the net as her opponent approached the net for the handshake. I appreciate her frustration, but, c'mon. Any more out of her mind she could have bounced it off the tape and clubbed Cirstea. Knowing Mirjana's gracious nature, however, I have little doubt she apologized to Sorana in th elocker-room afterward.

Wish her an awful lot of good luck and good thinking out there. Really do.

mikireturns, such a nice post from you! i agree with you in most of the things you wrote, and i'm glad that you wrote it the way you have... all what you have said is true; maybe it's not nice to hear it and yes, maybe truth hurts but we all need to be fair first to ourselves and accept the truth about what sometimes happens in Mirjana's matches... she obviously have a problem with it (when leading-closing games or ending match)but she's not the first or last tennis player to whom that happens... despite all, i hope you guys can overall see a progress in mirjana's game... to be honest i was a bit surprised few times in the match when mirjana kept the ball in play, not throwing everything out of the court or into the net; not waisting so many balls as she used to do before... (yes, it was strange to me how she got so disturbed or better to say how she allowed herself to become so disturbed by that sorana's as or not as ball.)
and in today's match, despite everything what happened and the way it happen i belive it was all about one or two ball; unfortunatly it happen sorana was the one that had those "one or two ball" prevails on "her side". even now, i can say it is a success for Mirjana that she got here to be able to play at this level on the tour, not just challengers like she had to do most of the last year. now she's here, present on the tour... i can't say how the situation with her ranking will develop, we'll see about that, it's still long way till the end of the season... and her progress is here, butit's a process that takes time.... her hunger is still here also, and as long as it's that way, i'm happy! ofcourse we all would like to see some giant results...

P.S. she'll find her grip again...

WTD, the luvvvvvvv is mutual, but you must know that I support Mirjana and have said so in no uncertain terms. We are all entitled to assess her results as we see them, and are entitled to our frustrations if we follow her results.

Yeah, she'll get over this godawful performance. Good grief, serving at 45% and 14 dfs and she STILL had Cirstea on the ropes in each set! The only trouble is that she lost two of those sets.

Yes, Mirjana is playing at a much higher level. She is bullying these girls around and getting right to the finish line and then blinking. I didn't say anything about the match that any commentator would not have said in a booth. I imagine Mary Carillo (with hair just like Brillo) would have had some choice words for Miki's fine display.

When watching Mirjana play courtside, say, two years ago in Challengers, she was not blowing leads. She was getting beaten because she played like shit. Now she is playing well, and then when she is on the brink of winning, starts to lose it.

I think it is very relevant to address her inexplicable questioning of the Cirstea ace down-the-T in that third set, because this literally pinpoints the very moment of Mirjana's mental collapse, when she was still squarely in the driver's seat.

We do not know if she has engaged in some similar focus-breaking behavior in some of her previous collapses this spring and early summer, because those matches were not live-streamed or televised. If she has done some dumb thing to break her own concentration while on the brink of victory (like going out of her zone to pointlessly question an ace and grumble for ten, fifteen seconds with the ump about it), then this kind of thing can be corrected and she might literally be able to avoid the occasional choke (which is really about focus).

It's worth looking into, because that stupidly questioned call was the exact moment of her demise in the 3rd set. Derailed her entire focus and intensity. She won only 5 points after that in four games!!!!

In any event, on to Palermo and no racket-throwing!

ajmo!
Jul 6th, 2011, 07:00 PM
She won 7 points, I'm quite sure. She was up 30-15 on Sorana's serve and on her own at 5-4.. She won one point I think at 5-5 and again was 30-15 up in last game.
But it doesn't matter.

well, maybe she decided to go back home(to florida) earlier since she lost in r1 in bastad

I cannot fathom that she would reject the chance to "get back on the horse" and correct the collapse in Bastad by passing-up a main draw opportunity like Palermo, particularly as weak as that draw appears to be. Not to mention the points she must defend in Palermo.

If she has withdrawn (and indeed her name disappeared from the official site's MD entry list) then she is damaged (mentally or physically) or simply cannot afford the extra expense of hanging around/flying around Europe for the rest of the week after the Cirstea loss.

But it is insane for her (unless injured or financially strapped) to pass-up any WTA-level main draw (even the chance of just one win!) if she is has direct entry. She won't have any main-draw direct entries on hard courts this summer (except for the US Open). The Quebec Bell Challenge may be her only other Tour-level direct entry chance for the rest of the year.

Hope she plays. I can't imagine she's feeling burned-out; there has been plenty of down-time between one event and the next for her, what with Eastbourne 1st Round loss, Wimbledon loss, and this unfortunate blip in Bastad.

Go get mad in Palermo, Mirjana, and right the ship, so to speak. Nothing to lose by trying and she will still have several days to rest before Stanford.

I do not agree. She needs break, she played a lot. Her season was full mix, first months she could not win at all on WTA level and past few weeks she shown sings of life - she made some very nice wins but still she lost few times too easy in mine eyes and with that some very nice chances sliped from her. There are plenty of reasons for her to stop now to go around like mad and try to regroup and make focused strategy. Tennis is such game, sometime you have to go back to drawing board and look again what can be done better and you hit again on court and try to play aas best as possible- I hope she will do that. I already said even smallest improvement in her game makes her very dangerous for other girls - but this has to be continous work and that is very hard for anyone who spent so much time off the court like her.

But she is very brave girl, that is one reason why I adore her, so she should not be at all scared of possibility to not have direct entry to wta tournaments, if she is on fire and in form that is not problem at all... she is such girl that can do that magic :bounce:

Yeah, you're right about several things, but I disagree with the whole "she needs a break" thing, primarily because, in following Mirjana's career patterns, if there is one thing that is true is that she is streaky and is a player who needs to play regularly to stay in form. If she were winning events back to back, I would say, "Slow Down, you wild champion," but she isn't winning events. Playing well, but losing in first rounds at her last three WTA-level events (though she did qualify nicely for Eastbourne and did okay at Cuneo).

Mirjana needs to play a lot to stay frosty, and she has admitted as much herself in the past. When she has taken two or three weeks off, she invariably comes back shaky and out of it. She had a whole week this week, a few days the week before, and entire week the previous week, an entire week the week before that, four days before that, and entire week the week before that (Nottingham egg that she laid in front of The Great Foretz Gacon), etc. She is not overplayed, in terms of match-play -- not anywhere NEAR the amount of matches she played last year -- and remember she won over fifty matches last year (at various levels) by playing a LOT. And even in down time, these pros train and work-out every day, anyhow, so they are always at it. Matches are what she needs while she has anything resembling strong form.

She needs to get out there again ASAP and put her foot down, forget about the blown Cirstea match 'cause it ain't the first match she's blown this year, and at least she did not have match points like she did against Medina. She can swing back and, no matter how frustrated we get at her mystifying play, sometimes, it is not as frustrated as she gets, as evidence by her reaction after the Cirstea debacle.

Back out there, Lucic! Go! Chop-chop! Toute de suite! Vamos! AJMO!

Who knows, there actually might be a health related reason behind this withdrawal. She did ask for a medical time-out in Bastad and even a doctor (not just a physio) came out during set #1. Of course, that might've just been tactical cause she was losing control at the moment, and it's safe to say that her loss came primarily for other reasons, but whatever it was (assuming it was real) it might have developed into something more serious. Just saying.

Never forget Begu's freaky mother 2 years ago in Ft. Walton Beach when she took offense that I was, in her opinion, cheering too loudly for Mirjana. I told her to go smoke her cigarette somewhere else. Mirjana killed her precious girl, 4-6 6-0 6-2 that day, I believe.
