I agree. At least she lost in style, so to speak, and not in a matter that wolud suggest she'd lost her mind (which sometimes does happen...:)). There were no piles of errors, at least no piles of double faults, which was great to see. That was especially the case when she was unable to find her first serve for several consecutive points, but still managed to keep herself calm and focused enough to not let DF's come up.

All in all, a successful week is behind Mirjana, and if she keeps this up for another week, we could see some very nice results coming from the City of light.

she kept it close vs. a very in form player (at that player's favorite tournament). it's ok :)
that said, i hate this tournament :fiery:. round 1 she was kicked off center court = no stream. round 2 there was no reason for her not to be on center court = no stream. quarterfinals, she's on center court and there's no stream!

I am annoyed at the lack of streaming for this match (Miki's run here generated a fair amount of press!) and the general treatment of Mirjana's main draw matches at this event. They forced her to play in Siberia for much of the span. (Did she run over the tournament director's beloved French poodle in a courtesy car, or something?).

That being said, this run was no small feat for her. 12 years since a quarterfinal? I know a little somethng about her career, but even my jaw drops at such an astonishing stat. That's just freaky weird ... but wonderful for her. And looking at the stats from today's match, it appears she played very solidly and with a good head on her shoulders against the equally in-form and highly dangerous Medina (3-time Strasbourg winner!). Stayed very much on Medina's ass the whole match. 3 aces, only 3 dfs. Virtually equal in percentages to AMG except when it came to her 2nd serve return point percentages, which were a bit less successful than in previous matches, but AMG has a very sturdy and deep second delivery. I would wager she made Medina work for it today, big time, and this has been a fabulous week for La Lucic.

In five days she has erased all the disappointments accrued during the prior part of the season and made another breakthrough, i.e. reaching the last eight for the first time since the 1990s for crying out loud! No matter what happens, if she doesn't feel pretty psyched and rejuvenated about that ...

And she clearly played well today, but just barely got beaten, fair and square. This is all very redeeming and positive for her. No doubt she is happy as a lark about it and we, her long suffering fans, have stuck around to see her defy expectations once again. I would consider her a dangerous floater in Paris against anyone, but hope for a really lovely draw that will let her settle-in and fight her good fight.

She can be very proud of herself for this effort. Very proud. The timing for this run could not have been better.

May the Draw Gods smile upon her. Her Wheel of Fortune revolves skyward.

The make-or-break matches for Mirjana now are RG first round and Wimbledon first round. Winning just those two matches would give her ~$70,000 and 200 points. That would do wonders for her ranking--and her wallet.

Just two matches. Let's hope she gets soft draws in the opening round (ie, Mladenovic rather than Schiavone) and that she brings her A-game on those two days. The rest is details.

That match would certainly get her on center court. I think the defending champion plays first match on center court, or is that just Wimbledon. Anyway, ideally I'd her to first get a win under her belt, then face a name player on a big court in the 2nd round. Like at the U.S. Open last year. I guess we'll see the draw tomorrow.

In other words, wearing helmets will be advised to anyone attending this match:lol:

Now seriosly, this is obviously one of the toughest draws Miki could've possibly got, but you never know it in tennis. Maria is in a form of her life, when it comes to clay, but Miki will not surrender this without a fight, I'm sure. For a change, she will face someone who can strike the ball incredibly hard too, so it'll be interesting to watch this. This will definately be on one of the main courts which is great, and I'm pretty sure it'll be a great spectacle regardless of the winner, mainly because girls have quite similar playing styles. For some reason, I always wanted to see Miki face Maria at least once while she's still active, of course it would've been better for Miki if this were to take place somewhere else, but who knows, maybe we'll see the story of the day happen out there.

Best of luck Miki!

Merde.

Let me think of some positives to throw out there for the benefit of all of us.

1. Mirjana has already scored her confidence-boosting breakthrough-of-the year on red clay this past week. Grass awaits, with all of its particular opportunities for her game.

2. Mirjana will unquestionably be excited to play a match against the biggest "name player" she has ever played in her life, with the exception of Graf and Seles and Venus and Serena.

3. Maria will certainly not "out-move" Miki on this surface. Nor will she necessarily outserve her.

4. Did I already say Mirjana will be very eager and excited to play the locker room-hating Maria Sharapova? Oh. I did. Up there at number one. Well, she will be excited. It will get her most competitive juices flowing.

5. As ma re said, anything is possible in tennis and that is a fact.

6. We will almost certainly get to see Mirjana play in a high-profile match where she will have utterly utterly nothing to lose. Commentators will be forced to mention her return to the Top 100 and her recent wins, and say nice things about her.

7. This is a big, Big, BIG opportunity for Mirjana. She will be especially aware of that. Matches like this are "why" she is even still out there playing tennis.

8. Hey, it's almost $20,000 no matter what and maybe she's playing doubles/mixed with somebody?

9. I'd rather see her lose to Sharapova gallantly than lose to Natasha BeBopalashnikova narrowly in round one.

10. I'd rather see her beat Sharapova brilliantly than beat BeBopalashnikova barely.

Feel better? Me neither. Not yet.

This doesn't bother me. Lucic will be on a main court. Also, Sharapova is due for a letdown. She is playing better this year but I can still see her having trouble with Miki. Miki has nothing to lose and Sharapova can hopefully revert to her inconsistency and serving troubles. Sharapovq has not been too great in the Grand Slams the last few years.

No, I believe she was really good this week. Medina beat easily Bartoli in Rome(where she had troubles with Mirjana) and also here won her first two matches a lot easier than against Miki. Also, McHale lost qualies in 3 sets and she's still young so she has lot of ups and downs in her game. Dokic, well she gave 3 games to Halep in R1. Mirjana would have to be god damn lucky to get such scores. She's in form, just look at her serve stat. this week. She was serving aces and DF's, not only DF's. She's ready, I'm 100% sure. And, yes, she got the worst draw(after Azarenka) but anything's possible. She just needs to enjoy the moment and not to think about rankings and everything that Sharapova did in last few years. When's the OOP gonna come out?

This is a shit opening round match-up, but the more I think of it, the more I think Miki will get a little sparkle in her eye over this. There is no way in hell I think Maria will win the French Open, all seven matches, and she will have to be wary of conditions and opponents in the opening rounds.

If Miki plays her absolute A-game, with a little xtra clay court smarts (and she's got them), stays super-focused, and moves super well and mixes it up to freak Maria out at key junctures (follow a few big shots to the net, Miki ... throw up an unexpected lob... USE that drop shot!!!!). But Sharapova will have to have a C+ or B- sort of day.

Tennis is tennis is tennis is tennis. Best of luck to Miki. Just hope she has excitement and fun out there, no matter what.

Miki is aware of comments like this ( not necessarily this one or from yourself ) and I know she doesn't appreciate them. How about giving her credit for winning 5 matches in a row and only losing to a proven clay court player?

I don't like that she has to play Sharapova only because if she loses she's stuck with the 5 points on her ranking. However, all the girls Mirjana lost to on clay move beautifully on the surface, so if Mirjana can serve and return well enough and put enough balls in court she's going to make Maria move far more than she'd like to. Dokic isn't in Sharapova's league but hits a hard flat ball and Miki took care of her. It depends on the day but I'd say Zvonareva or Wozniacki would've been far worse draws for Miki's game.

And for what it's worth, I believe Mirjana (at her best) is a smarter, better player than she was 12, 13, 14 years ago. With elite resources (good travelling coach, physio, trainer & hittin gpartner) and week-in, week-out play, I could see her very easily as one of the world's stalwart Top 20 players. As it stands, she is right now absolutely capable of Top 30-50 status without the classic "entourage" and, on any given, day, I believe she can play Top 5-10 ball. I choose to look at her great week in Strasbourg as the fulfillment of her very real and very quality performances against Makarova and Medina in Barcelonoa and Rome. She is on song, fit and confident. We must never count her out of this match against Maria, particularly given her penchant for producing some inspired play against big names when people give her little or no chance at all (Graf, Seles, S. Williams, Pierce).

MikiReturns, I like how you are seeing the glass as half full, not half empty. Miki is match tough and confident right now. She has nothing to lose. She will enjoy the big stage and be motivated. Sure, Sharapova won the Italian Open, but anyone is beatable on the right day. Precisely because she won the Italian Open, she is suddenly thrust to the forefront as a favorite. More pressure will be on her. And she knows the field is wide open so this is a great chance for the career slam. This will add more pressure. So, how will Sharapova handle this added pressure. Will she be a stady rock and be ultra focused and lethal, or will she be jittery and unnerved. I hope for the latter.

But Sharapova will have to have a C+ or B- sort of day.

ITA. The good think is that Sharapova occasionally does have these off days, so anything is possible. I would like Miki's chances better on grass because Maria's movement is good enough to allow her to retrieve Miki's hard shots on a slower surface. Unfortunately, if both players are on I see Sharapova winning easily, like 2 and 1.

http://articles.nydailynews.com/2006-05-07/sports/18336432_1_marinko-lucic-mirjana-lucic-goran-ivanisevic/3

...In her spare time, she'll flop on the white leather couch in her condo and watch archaeological digs on the History Channel, though most of all she likes to watch tennis. Her mother and sisters tried to hide the remote in the beginning, but it didn't work. Big tournament or small, if tennis is on the screen, Lucic watches it, as often as not through a veil of tears. When she sees Maria Sharapova or Svetlana Kuznetsova or one of the other new girls winning tournaments, walking away with huge checks, the pangs of what she had cut through her like daggers...."My time on the court will come again," Lucic says. "I promise you that. Everybody on the outside may think, 'Oh, she'll never do it, she's been away too long,' but nobody can put limitations on you but yourself."

Hopfully, she still remembers what that pang of hunger feels like and can use it as extra motivation in the upcoming match against Sharapova.

Ha. That's back when the History Channel actually featured things like archaeological digs. Now it focuses on trashy, illiterate white fat men operating pawn shops and arguing about chainsaws. :haha:

I just sacrificed a unicorn (strangled it with a rainbow while reciting the proper spell), so Mirjana ought to at least be jitter-free on the day of the match.

Seriously, tennis is all about upsets. I remember one year when itty-bitty Camille Pin had match point against Big Birdopova at the Aussie. Just make her move and pounce on the nine million 2nd serves you will see, Miki. That's all. Quite simple, really.

Maria Sharapova RUS (7) v Mirjana Lucic CRO
Zuzana Ondraskova CZE v Caroline Garcia FRA
Jill Craybas USA v Eleni Daniilidou GRE
Yung-Jan Chan TPE v Klara Zakopalova CZE (31)

Ugh. Why couldn't she play Ondraskova or Garcia in R1, *then* play Sharapova? She would still get on CC, be shown on TV, play the great Maria, etc., etc., but she would also have $35K and 100 points in her pocket.

Make it awesome Mirjana! ;)

She's gonna get big support, with her family and friends being there. And if she just gets the match interesting and plays good I know the crowd will also support her. I just wish there would be someone, a journalist who would tell Mirjana's story again. I think many people would be interested to see that girl against Sharapova.

I was reading post froms some forum from 1997- It was about who is more talented. Mirjana, Kournikova and Venus were in poll and Mirjana won. Everybody were saying how Miki has touch and is so much better on net than Venus. Even Martina Hingis said how Mirjana would be real challenge for her if they would let her play(age rules). I mean, these things don't go away. Mirjana still can. Kournikova is at least rich and famous, Venus is also champion. God, Mirjana deserved it more than they did. In fact, if anybody did she did. Go out there and beat Sharapova. Who cares about the draw. You're not out there to win a match or two, you are out there to compete for the title.

This is was she was dreaming about when she couldn't play. winning titles, not winning a match or two. Get your mind set for it. Lets surprise the world.

Mirjana's enthusiastic attitude about this match is delightful to see. She is no fool; she knows that Sharapova is not exactly adrift like she was for so many months, but by the same token she knows that she, too, is exhibiting some exceptional form -- "commanding" form she really did not exhibit throughout all of last year (I'm talking about the recent Makarova, Medina [Rome], and Dokic matches). She's just had an exhilarating confidence-boost, what with 5 consecutive match wins ... the same amount won by Sharapova in Italy.

Sharapova is not untouchable on clay. If Mirjana psyches-herself enough and wills herself to go out there and produce something close to her very best, and if Sharapova underestimates her or dismisses her out-of-hand before the encounter (which is something I think the haughty Sharapova tends to do, at times), then anything can happen in a Slam 1st round. But all the speculation is pointless.

Mirjana will have to go out there and make it happen, which is absolutely doable in the world of tennis. She has the weaponry and natural talent. She won't outhit Maria, but she could move better than Maria and, given the parity of pace between them, she ought not to be so inclined to spray balls (as she would against a pusher or mid-paced hitter) and could settle into a pounding rhythm, perhaps extending rallies to unnerve the Giant Girl. If she seizes opportunitites (and she'll get them) ... who can say? The nice thing is that she is apparently very determined to give it one hell of a try, like she has never tried before. A master-stroke of inspiration will be the key ingredient for Miki, here.

Hope everyone gets a chance to see the match.

I know nobody's thinking about it now but I hope Mirjana decided to play both challengers in Nottingam. One being a 75k+H and other 100k+H she could really do well on both. I believe it would be better choice than just to play one and go to Birmingham next week. I'm sure she would do great on both tournaments and then she would have many matches on grass and a week to rest and train before Wimbledon. We'll see. GL tomorrow Mikica :D

Mirjana is on the entry list for $75K+H Nottingham the week after next. She might even be able to squeeze in as the #8 seeds if a couple of higher-ranked players withdraw or are still playing RG.

Thankfully Mirjana doesn't read much press before matches. I've seen a number of articles fawning over Sharapova with the typical effusive drool ("...her alabaster legs...a face out of Vogue magazine..." --this crap from The Guardian) and implying that Miki is barely worthy to meet her in the first round.

Please. On paper things are what they are, but tennis journalists need to write with more objectivity. Mirjana could catch her on the day and, if she plays truly immaculate, inspired tennis, Sharapova would go down sooner than a Woz or a Clisters or even a Petkovic on this surface.

Oh, it would give me such joy to see her do it. Sending good thoughts, sending good thoughts...

And glad it's not the third or last match, especially not after a men's single match.

Do your best Miki.

So true, so true! Big occasion, big moment, big chance. I hope she can find the right balance of sheer fun combined with inspiration/focus. (Maybe, like Suzanne Lenglen, a couple of stiff drinks before the match to loosen up? ...hee hee).

And, wonderfully, a new fan converted for Miki -- a friend of mine in Vermont. She knows only a liitle about tennis, technically, but loves to watch the Slams religiously. She is rooting for Mirjana because I have told her all about Miki's comeback. I love the way she expressed it in an e-mail earlier today:

And your sweet little striver---Miss Lucic! Good for her! I remember you sent me photos of her that you took when you actually went to see her play--was that in Florida? She tries and tries and has the talent, but I take it from you that her making this Open is a huge deal for her.I cringe a little to hear that she's got to face Maria right off.I am a Maria fan,and she's a tough cookie. But of course I will be rooting for your MIki this time, because that's the way you want it,and I aim to please.I will send all kinds of spirits from the Green Mountains here to push her over the top---go get 'em,sweetpea! Ok,Tuesday, but I don't know when. Our listings don't tell us.I could just set the recorder up for a 6 hour run during the night so as not to miss her. They show some of the matches during the night here--today it did start with the women at 3am.

But I won't miss it,and I will hope like hell that she has her best game ever.Go,Miki! She's a sweet little character, and more than likely, quite a brilliant person. You have to be,to be at the top of the tennis world.I am learning that there is quite a bit more to it than pulling your shorts out of your ass.And Federer rules,he rules,he rules!

ENJOY THE MATCH, EVERYONE! CHEER FOR MIRJANA LIKE NEVER BEFORE. We'll see where this WTA Quarterfinal-worthy game is headed very soon.

God Bless Mirjana.

I want her to win. I believe she has the power. She has the talent ... more natural talent than so many. I believe she is ready.

Plus, friends, anything can happen in tennis.

If she really wants it ...

Really: if you want to beat the one that everyone else considers the "better player" you go out there with attitude and you just do it. You crunch them. No worries about rank, or money, or who is prettiest (Mirjana WAY prettier than BigBird), or who has the better record.

On the day, if you know you have the talent, you make it a point to beat your opponent.

You do the best you can, without doubt. You produce your best. A player just plays.

In my USTA regional events in California around 2001, my worst match ever inexplicably became my best. I was down 1-6 2-5 against a brutal all-court demon with a runaround forehand. It was the semifinals of the USTA 5.0 event, I could not find a way around his weapon, even though I was the quicker of the two of us. He would ot let me play my backhand shot, my best, most evil shot. Plus he was on top of the net at every opportunity. Even my best tennis buddy, courtside at the Hyatt Regency, during changeover, leaned down and said, 'Yo, dude, you are getting your ass kicked. I've got some stuff I could catch-up-with at work, so I', outta here."

SOME FRIEND!

The I served to stay in the match, 1-6 2-5 15-40 and he missed an easy backhand, match point. Nothing to lose, I proceeded to angle every ball to his backhand. Every. single. ball. What did I have to lose? It unnerved him, I held, then broke, and we eventually went to a tiebreak. By this time, we were both swinging freely, only I realized that, if I pulled him wide on his backhand and then stayed patient enough to rip a two-hander up-the-line, he (the truly superior player) got flustered. He choked like a chicken, I got the match to 5-5 in the 2nd set, being so far down, and then he served bombs to lead 6-5, I squeaked to tie it, won the breaker by just opening-up and ripping down-the-line backhands and inside-out forehands (I hit the flattest shots imaginable), took the set, and then totally crushed him 6-1 in the third.

Mental. And I am not a piece of toast, but he was the superior player. Undeniably.

I went on to win the event, beating some dude from San Francisco 6-2 6-3 in the final.

Even when your friends desert you ... you can do it.

Maria is a better player. It happens.
She walked on the court like she is ready to make big miracle, in last few games it all looked like she want's to leave ASAP.
It happens. Maria is the best out there.

I'm not negative about this. It was bad, yes, but I'm looking foward to grass season.
The only thing that changed is that after today I don't believe that Mirjana can win a slam or something. But at this stage, when she's 94th it didn't mean nothing. She can still be TOP50 or something, no doubt about that.

ma re
May 24th, 2011, 01:26 PM
Pretty much everything has already been said, so I'll keep it short...basically, I agree with many here in a sense that throughout the second set the only thing that was constantly crossing my mind was: "OK girl, you're losing this, but at least scream, yell, swear, throw a racquet, just do something to show that your care!!!". I was hoping one of those things would happen, cause that often changes things, wakes up a player, clears the mind and lifts some of the frustration. But this was just awful. Totally deflated performance. Some years back she'd be screaming like a crazed Amazon out there, but today, like it wasn't her on the court. Terrible.

ajmo!
May 24th, 2011, 01:56 PM
It was because she felt like it's not all about her. She would connect 2 or 3 great shots in a rally and Maria would still return it super strong. This is what Maria can do, and Mirjana can't. That's turning defense in offense. And everytime Mirjana would hit a good shot Maria would give her another back.... And that's when Mirjana can't do much. It's because of poor footwork and also lack of defense. It would look better on grass where points are shorter.

ajmo!

I am not Mirjana's fan only because of tennis.
It's her story that makes you like her. She makes everyone feel that anything's possible. Therefore, I'am not a fan of best(:help:) Croatian tennis player, I'm a Mirjana Lucic fan.
She did so many amazing things.
I believe. I don't want to give up on her now.. I mean guys, year and a half ago she lost to McHale 6-3 6-0, and it was a 25k. This is Maria Sharapova(who won Rome) and Roland Garros. Ups and downs. Lets hope fore some up soon.

The reason for that is because she is ACTUALLY NOT A GOOD TENNIS PLAYER.

Gee. Maybe we could have figured that out since it took her 12 years to reach another WTA quarterfinal. Gosh, could that have been a clue?

I really am finished -- most of her fans here are absolutely beloved, wonderful people (servivor, lucic fan, what the deuce, croatian guy) except for two screaming drag-queen %itches who would both force a train to take a dirt-road. Yeah, Mirjana needs fans like you to tell her, "Oh, you played so good against Maria today, Miki. Please, allow us to kiss you a$$ in worship."

If anyone responds to that insult, you will know exactly who I was talking about.

That part -- the sissies who flounce about here and there and say "Oh, you little fans, :worship:I:worship: am on Mirjana's inside team" (when they are so NOT...duh) -- that sort of half-wit "I'm the elite fan" crap doesn't matter.

It was about Mirjana and her spirit on the tour, this time around. But she folded like a house of cards, like I have never seen anyone fold on a tennis court. And she didn't even look that perturbed about it.

I have met Mirjana and still think Mirjana is a wonderful girl, apart from all of the drama of her previous life. Truly, she is as pleasant and as likeable a person as you would want to meet, given her strange pedigree.

But she needs to wind-it-down, after this drastic embarrassment. It only confirms what was present from the beginning, and what many of us did not want to admit to ourselves: a big hitter with talent and emotion...and also with the flakiest loser-brain EVER.

Mirjana ... it has been fun rooting for you, but I think I'll convert to someone who gives a damn. Fuckin ay, Jill Fucking Rickety Old Craybas practically gave herself a heart attack fighting for the next round.

Maria was ~so~ beatable today. Totally. Mirjana: flake-round all you like, but you will never, ever even touch the Top 70, much less the Top 50. Marry. Have babies. Teach tennis. Write a book. Be happy.

I enjoyed being your fan, but you toyed with the game instead of truly leaping back into it with 100% gusto of mind and heart. You were satisfied just to get back to the Top 100 and that is now very apparent. After 2 full years of this "comeback", I can say this with great confidence as a player & observer of your game, court-side. Tell your grandchildren you got back up to #94. That is actually wonderful.

Is it worth following? HELL, NO.

And today's crapfest confirmed it.

I understand your frustration. It was a big letdown to watch her collapse. But, I think she can still be top 50-75. She isn't too far away from that number, especially if she can defend her grass points from last year. I have a feeling you'll stick with her after the dissapointment of today fades a little bit. I mean, yeah, you can root for Craybas and admire her fight, but don't expect alot of excitement with her good or bad.

ajmo!
May 24th, 2011, 08:11 PM
Everyone has a right to do whatever he or she wants. But it's not the first time you're ending with Mirjana. I mean, just make a decision. Are you ready to go trough everything or not? It's not easy to be a fan of someone ranked around 100.

I was watching Kim today. And as I was watching the match I was just thinking how Mirjana would play probably similar tennis if she managed to develop. But, she had a break. Big break. Now, she's probably back to her old level but tennis has improved. Mirjana hasn't(comparing her to that 16 y.o. kid who was beating everyone easily).
But, she can always get better. You never know.
It's life.

Two things. Footwork and defense. Drill.
And she needs to calm down when waiting on return.

And to repeat myself: It's an amazing story. After all being back on the biggest courts.

Someday, maybe.. Have hope.
In the first two years of playing on challengers she couldn't get pass QF. Year later she won two and moved to WTA Tour.
Maybe next year she's gonna be able to win WTA tournament.

YOU NEVER KNOW! MAYBE IN FEW WEEKS, MAYBE NEVER..

It's still wort of waiting.

probably the toughest non-seed.
giorgi's last three results are a 50k final (clay), followed by a 50k win (hard), followed by qualifying at wimbledon, only to lose to pironkova (who is on fire). honestly, after that heart-breaker vs. cibulkova, i don't know what to expect. i hope she's gotten her thoughts together and is ready to move on
anyway, miki has doubles tomorrow...fourth up on court 1. should be good to get her clay feet. good luck!

She was right on the same level as Cibulkova, could have won, and now Cibulkova has a good chance to win Wimbledon, so I have to think that, on form, Mirjana can handle anybody in this draw. She will hopefully grind hard and power her way to strong performances in the next 3 events ... gl Miki

She could have beaten Cibulkova, but you have to remember Miki's game is really suited to grass. She hits hard and flat, and her average movement around the court is not as easily exploited on the faster surfaces. I think can do well here, but there are some good clay court players here and I'm not sure her good results on grass will necessarily translate to clay.

Well, good points, surely, but I disagree (a bit). There is no doubt that Mirjana's game is especially effective in some forward ways on grass, but most of her success has, in fact, come on clay courts (red clay, to be exact). She was raised on the surface and feels comfortable on it, and, more than she is given credit for, knows a trick or two about sliding and working rallies on clay. I believe we have the clay courts this year to thank in terms of Mirjana really finding her range and form. Her fine performances against Makarova, Medina, and her quarterfinal in Strasbourg testify to a prowess on clay that is not negligible. Moreover, these days, a big game "in form" is a big game on any surface, and Mirjana has got an in-form big game with some firmly established clay court savvy, as well. If she is in the mood (and I expect she will be after that heartbreaker against Cibulkova), she ought to maintain her form and pick up some steam in the next few events.

Looking back now, the Cibulkova loss is not quite as devastating in my mind, given what a fighter DC has proved to be at Wimbledon, and how Miki was toe-to-toe with her more than anyone has been. I think Lucic is also now realizing that the form she displayed at Wimbledon is yet one more encouraging sign of what excellent things she has achieved in the past two motnhs -- the disappointment of losing the nailbiter may still hurt, but it is in perspective.

Reviving the Newport event (or rescheduling it before Wimbledon, somehow) would be great, but the close proximity between Roland Garros & Wimby makes the grass season swift and pretty much antiquated. Newport became anticlimactic after Wimbledon, except for exos. A shame. So odd, the demise of grass, esp. when one considers that all Slams except the French were once contested on grass as recently as the early 1970s. I'd like to see them expand the grass season, but we're lucky the Brits haven't changed the surface at their venues (yet).

Looking forward to seeing Mirjana play at Stanford. It would be interesting to see if she squeezes into the MD in San Diego. Meanwhile, hope she keeps surging ahead these next three events.

I didn't realize the women used to play at Newport. If anyone ever has a chance, visit the Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport. It's a very nice place and Newport, in general, is nice = right on the ocean. I've been to the ATP event a few times, and while the draws are weak, the experience as a whole is nice.

IMO this has already been a good week for Mirjana. She has justified her seeding, picked up 36 points and--best of all--easily beat two good clay-court specialists. Giorgi in particular could have been tough. She might be only #169 but she's at her CH ranking and had won 12 of her last 14 matches going into this tournament. The fact that Mirjana won 1 and 1 says a lot. And Camerin is no pushover. She's far from her best form but is still #120.

Still, at the risk of being greedy, it would be great if Mirjana won one more match. The 70 points would more than offset the points she has coming off after Palermo (60).

Her next match, against Thorpe, is definitely winnable. Don't blow it, Mirjana! Best of luck.

Ah, of course; I forgot about that. That's a much better way to think of these new points.

Look at it this way: with Mirjana's Wimbledon points already gone and removed, she currently stands at about 91 in the world with this showing. Kudos to Laura Thorpe and her little run, here, but with the form Mirjana has been displaying the last six, seven weeks (and already on these particular courts) ... um ... I don't think so.

Let's hope for continued good things not only here but in the next two successive events.

My thought is that Mirjana is thinking like one of the Big Girls out there. All that great play has reinforced her knowledge that she absolutely belongs in the mainstream. She feels she's back to her prime days, in terms of confidence, and with good reason. I would not necessarily want to see her on the other side of the net right now.

Of course, GL, Lucic. Keep getting better ...

I figured, but I see absolutely no reason why she could not beat an Arantxa Rus, to say nothing of a Tastishvili or Voegoleleleleleogleogleloolee. After all, when you've beaten the likes of Vesnina, Vinci, Dokic, and Makarova in recent weeks (and a win against Medina ... I pretend she won that 6-2 5-2, 2 MPs match).

Dare we dream of the high 70s?
