looks like it will be tomorrow as the live scores have shut down for Strasbourg. Glad I didn't know she was even playing till after the match was suspended so I missed the usual drama.

It wasn't really dramatic. Only in terms that I've expected Mirjana to win 2 & 2 or something like that, and not missing MP's again.

I know. You can bet that Perrin got some heavy-duty coaching during the delay; the tight scoreline upon resumation of play suggests it. Perrin may have some measure of talent despite her youth. Big server with a one-handed backhand usually = Giftedness. I'll bet she's really mixing-up backhands out there.

But Mirjana cannot dare lose this one. If Perrin took the 2nd set today (and she very well could have) I think Mirjana would have flipped again, imploded in a fit of negativity. The overnight break in play gives her more time to steel her resolve and not just go down in flames in half an hour.

But I, too, was expecting more of a 2 and 2 smack-down. If Miki is in the kind of form to be taking out top 50 players, confidence should be burgeoning ... save for the shattering collapse against Medina.

Win the last point, Lucic.

mikireturns

Good for Miki ... she won: 6-3 7-6(3)!

What a relief to close this out in straights and get back in the winner's circle, if only for a match. That ought to reverse much of the junkiness of the Medina loss.

Last point to Lucic!

good news to wake up to at 4:00 am. It seems Lucic pounced on a couple of second serves late in the tiebreak and it made the difference. I am going to use this good news as a springboard for my own USTA match this morning.

Yeah. :) Funny to see how Mashona lost to Moore last week 60 61 and now Mirjana beat Moore 62 62. Probably Mirjana's gonna have to play really good if they want to win, but still doubles are not singles.
Next is Brodsky who surprised with a win over Mladenovic today.
GL Miki!

I also hope she's gonna find some high ranked partner and play doubles in Paris, but I really doubt.
Anyway, she should be given at least MIX WC for Wimbledon, if she wants to play it.

i'm just happy she's playing doubles. all of her partners have been pretty poor so far, but her ranking will finally start heading up and it's good practice. and dominikovic lost 0 and 0 to a 14 year old who then lost 0 and 0 to bondarenko, so they really should win that :D

looking ahead at the potential first round draws, it's a. bondarenko, hradecka, ivanovic or petkovic
bondarenko is the best draw because she's been out injured since moscow last year
i'd hate for her to draw hradecka because hradecka is playing great and it won't get on center court

Finally, some solid successive wins from Mirjana -- that's got to make her feel lots better. Don't know much about Brodsky, other than that Mirjana is seeded to win and qualify. Good numbers from Mirjana today indicate that she should do just fine. Very thrilled she is in the dubs yet again. Makes one feel she really is back as part of the regular tour.

The potential main draw options are a bit daunting, but she knows she can ratchet things up out there and hurt the top girls. Good luck to her~

It has been a while since Mirjana won two matches in a row--let alone on the same day! So glad to see this.

She really needs to take advantage of what has been a very kind draw. In the last qualy round she should be playing Thorpe (#173). Instead she'll play Brodski (#262).

C'mon, Mirjana--you can do this!

mikireturns
May 16th, 2011, 12:07 PM
Good grief ... wonderful that she qualified for the first time this season (!), but what a head-case. She needs to watch tapes of herself or something and see what it is that she is doing wrong in these 6-1 5-1 MP situations. There may be breathing exercises she can do to calm down and allow herself to step forward to close such matches effectively. Loosen up. Whatever happens to her brain at these junctures has got to be manifesting itself physically (movement, timing, toss, combination of all, etc.). She must strike with power and yet play smart & responsibly on the first match point she gets (that lovely balance), but she must also not panic if she does not win the very first match point (or even the second). Opponents getvery inspired when they are down MP. Miki obviously panics, and she needs to train herself just a bit in the head to stay positive and calm and loose.

There is nothing abnormal about requiring two or three match points to put someone away. Blowing leads to lose entire sets, however, is a dangerous problem. I suspect it's just a case of panic for her and she could fix that. I don't think it's a confidence issue, because one is obviously playing confident if one is up 6-1 5-1. I'll bet anything it is an inner panic/anxiety when she doesn't manage to snag the win on an initial match-point, or a second one.

NOTE TO HER COACH/TEAM: Help her with this particular issue.
On the bright side, she did not just "go away" in a fit of negativity and fought this one out ... even better, she SERVED it out. Match was on her racket, and she finally bagged it.

Well done, Lucic ... at a time wherein she really really needed to string some matches together, she did so.

But now the main draw looms and she has chances to meet big players immediately. Opportunity knocks. Answer the door, Miki. Carpe jugulum.

Hard to believe Lucic and Dokic have only played once. At 25,000 challenger in Florence in 2008. Dokic won in three sets. This matchup should get some media attention. Nice focus and form out there against a girl who has made some serious inroads this year, and who has spanked her in the past so definitively! 4 matches in a row for Miki? 46 points under her belt?

I like the way her game stacks up against that of Dokic, who is never the most consistently motivated player out there. Miki will get a look at a lot of big, solid strokes landing right in her comfy hitting-one. It is certainly an "occasion match". Miki will remember that she took a set from her in 08 and she will know she can do it.

Good for Mirjana this week. Not saying she escaped a bullet with Ivanovic pulling-out (after taking a wild-card, too), because McHale has been a tough cookie this year and is ranked higher than Mirjana. Good work indeed.

Lucic fans! Go here: http://www.facebook.com/internationauxdestrasbourg?ref=ts
And like the post by Jerry Yik:
"J'espère que le grand match Dokic vs Lucic sera mis sur la Court Central demain."

He tells them to put Lucic vs Dokic on CC for stream. Cause there's a huge chance it won't be put on CC due to seeds. If many people like post they see there's a big interest and may put it on CC.
Hurry up, OOP is out soon...

:D Makarova wasn't too sick to play and run and hit and serve the whole match without a bathroom break! I just love how the women always have excuses when they lose, before they lose, in case they might lose, while they're losing, and -- sometimes -- even when they're winning, because there's no guarantee they won't lose. Aye yi yi. By the way, I heard Miki gave birth to triplets the night before that Makarova match. What a recovery!

Good first set win for "The M & M's" in dubs, but they need to step it up in set 2! Break back, girls!

Best of luck, for sure.

By the way, her Makarova win in Barcelona was her first win this year in a WTA main draw.

Also, for all fans, do check out the headline generated by Miki on the WTA Official Tour site. FINALLY they are putting her in the spotlight, for all of her nice efforts last year, the official site rarely singled her out for kudos. But she's the center of a little bit of WTA love now ...

I waited for something nice to write about and it's finally here. But I can't say I'm too optimistic about today. Sure, you never know it with Miki, cause she's predictable as an average tornado, but I don't think that what she showed in qualies will be enough to get her through against Dokic.

Of course, Dokic hasn't made a decent claycourt win in a very long time (and by a decent claycourt win I mean the one over a top100 player), but then she came here and wiped the floor with Halep, who is ranked about the same as she is (in the 60's). Miki did make three wins here, but if we'll be totally honest, these girls were all ranked in the mid to low 200's, so getting three wins of that caliber is like reaching the quarters of an average 25k. In my book, not such a huge achievement for someone ranked around #100.

What is definately a noteworthy result for Miki here is the one against McHale. A top100 player in very good form (also close to career-high ranking), and she kept it in two, which is great. I particularly like how she won the tie-break, and looking back at some stats, I can't help thinking that tie-breaks are one of Miki's strong points, so to speak. Last year, for example, she played 17 tie-breaks and won 12 out of those 17, which is very good. Shows that she CAN get extra focused and extra careful if needed, but she obviously doesn't think that's necessary most of the time, cause unlike in the TB's, in ordinary games she can afford to spray around a ball or two (or a bucket, or a few...).

Anyway, she'll definately have to be at her very best today and I know that she CAN be, but we'll see how she handles the situation. It's great that she got these wins right before the major, which will definately give her a much needed confidence boost.

All in all, fingers crossed for today, I will be watching:)

 This is grand news to read and enjoy over the first cup of morning coffee!

A fine performance by The Mighty Mirjana, who was clearly psyched-up for this encounter and who brought the goods. 6 aces to 2 double faults, and best of all, her return game was vastly improved -- in the 50s on 1st serve returns and 60s on 2nd serve returns. This is so key for her; her shots were finding their marks.

Despite the weird start to her season, we have seen breakthroughs from Mirjana in the past several weeks that she was unable to accomplish through all of last year.

Her first win (plus a near-win)over a Top 50 player.

And now this is Mirjana's FIRST WTA-level QUARTERFINAL SINCE 1999???????

12 years.

And she not only took this match by the horns, she got her serve-it-out game and didn't so much as blink. Against a quality opponent who smeared the court with "Boobs" Halep yesterday.

I'm sure this has got to feel as good to Mirjana's sense of confidence and accomplishment as anything she has done in a decade, or more. Again, she has not even REACHED the last eight of a WTA quarterfinal in 12 years.

I can lament for a minute that she did not play like this during the first four months of the season (points, points, points opportunities), but there are two Slams coming up and, with this sort of form, she can walk into those Slams (and every event) with her head held high, feeling ready to show her good stuff.

Well done. One cannot help but be thrilled for her. Though she showed undisputed grit last year, she was not able to play this well and beat these sorts of players in key matches all of last year. That has changed. She has improved.

Back in the Top 100 she goes. Now that she has a taste of notable success, getting to the final stages of a WTA event, she will keep working hard and want more. Kudos to her for not giving up.

She lost a set, but she cannot break down now! She simply cannot! She is playing so well, and I especially like how she was controling her serve inteligently, even when the serve wasn't at it's best. Usually, she would just force a missile on a 2nd serve and make a DF, but now she seems to be playing so much better than that. Ajmo Miki, fight back!!!
