Who can blame them, Maria pulled out after she went deep in both PMs.
However the entry list is not that bad!

Actually I think Caro should have skipped this one too. Didn't she/Piotr complain about the work load between IW and Miami? Why not take a break now? Appearance fee

Still if she's fit and if she cares (she usually does) I'd say Caro is the fave to win this.

Wozniacki's clay court credentials are no where near JJ's. Whether you'd believe it or not, Wozniacki is not very good on clay. Her defending abilities are not as successful because she doesn't slide into her shots, rather she slides AFTER she hits the shot, making her lose time to get back into her default court positioning which she is best at. Also, her topspin forehand is completely useless on this surface and every time I've seen her lose on clay it is because of her forehand not doing any damage at all.

Ummm this is just about as awesome as it could get for Jankovic. Just like in Monterey but she decided to fuck up against Pavs -___-

LMFAO at people think Woz will beat Jelena on clay :hysteric: She barely beat her on HC and Jelena wasn't even in good form. ANd now you peasents want to go and say that Woz is gonna be her on Clay when Jelena has gotten her better since Dubai. Dear lord. Stosur will lose early unless she magically finds her amazing clay game. I would love a Jankovic v Stosur final so Jelena can get some revenge from last year. If she finds form during this clay season she will be a strong contender for RG. She's is consistently the best clay courter in the TOP 10. Schiavone is a close second. Stosur is an amazing claycourter when she puts it together but by no means a consistent one.

OneSlamWonder
Apr 4th, 2011, 07:55 AM
I think this is Jelena's to take. She always plays better on clay than on other surfaces and she is not is that terrible form. Also the draw... I would say her only questionable matches here would be QF against Dani (if Daniela gets there and is on the roll) and maybe final against Stosur, again if Stosur finds form, which won't be easy. I don't really see Caro being a problem for JJ on clay (or at all, Dubai was just a mishap). Also Jelena seems to care about her top 10 position (hard for me to admit, but that's currently the only trait that she has to offer) so like in Doha and Dubai, she will fight for it (just see for how many tournaments did she sign up for, it's crazy).

KBlade
Apr 4th, 2011, 08:04 AM
Stosur desperately needs to gain form here. Not just for the sake of her confidence but for her ranking. Wozniacki, after having time off from her early exit, should also be revitalized and ready for another title run, she's already proven that she likes the green clay even if it is a MM level.

I personally would really like to see Jankovic put together a run to the championship. She's been stringing together some consistent results at the last couple of events, and it would be nice to finally see her rewarded.

After Bartoli's exit Wednesday Thursday has become a REALLY troublesome day for the favorites! So far 4 of 6 matches have ended in defeat for the higher ranked player - Stosur, Peer, Petrova and Hantuchova - and the 2 favorites who did win through - Caro and Wickmayer - didn't exactly have easy matches.
Mirza - Lisicki is on right now. Hard to say what would be the upset there. Mirza is the higher ranked but Lisicki beat Bartoli yesterday and is a former FCC champ.
Jankovic - Scheepers play afterwards. JJ should win that match comfortably but you can't really be sure what to expect this day.

Caro and JJ was the poll faves beforehand, and with the upsets so far even more so!

Given how much Caroline struggled against Barbara, JJ looks to be the clear favorite, especially considering she plays better on green clay than most of her counterparts (and is a former champion).

But still, Jelena always manages to mess relative cake-walk draws like this up. I'm thinking Wickmayer might surprise us with a run to the final/title, or Peng could pull an upset in the final over the other player.

It's worth noting that even though Caro's been getting much of her usual bashing at least noone has dared to dredge up the old "Wozniacki always gets a cakewalk draw" charge! Strycova was tough. Wickmayer is likely to be tough, too. And if Caro gets past her she'll probably face JJ, the toughest of all opponents. 'For once' it's the half Caro is NOT in that's fallen apart with no top 10 seeds left!
