I sensed that Sharapova was tired. Probably a lot of the screaming that she's been doing and Azarenka took advantage of it.

that was too close to call at end, Vika got edgy
knew it was gonna end one way or another with a DF or a FH error.

Vika was 4-0 up in 2nd......after those two lucky netcords in a row, something changed.

Masha  but Vika ;) :D

Good tournament nevetheless. I liked the end, she fought off two match points to win the game. She just couldn't hold (like the rest of the match) so I knew it wasn't going to be 5-5 but at least she did the best she could. :)

At least Maria made the end somewhat respectable; this was on the verge of being a scarring experience.

On Maria's form: I think the real miracle's been how often she was -- in the past, certainly -- able to keep the ball in the lines with such low-percentage play. Mental issues are certainly a factor, but so are the law of averages. Too bad, she doesn't seem to have any other way to win matches.

Meanwhile: congrats to Vika!!!

 Just way, way too many errors from Maria up to 6-1 4-0, and that was too big a hole to dig herself out of. Valiant effort for 4 games in the 2nd set but alas it was not enough. Great tournament for her but it's a shame she had to finish it with such a disappointing performance :(

Well done Vika :yeah:

Congrats to Vika :worship::kiss::worship:

But that was a very bad day for Masha:sad::hug:Tons of errors from all sides and nearly not able to hold her own serve. And....and that really bothered me the most...her movement.:eek::eek: I don't know if her ankle gave her bigger trouble again, but she moved like a tank most of the time. Overall it was way too easy for Vika to outplay her and only at the very end it was a better competition. But well, a final is not bad for Maria and she can built on that.

wow, so so so so ugly. :o This isn't really much better than pushing. Both have very forced strokes and styles. I had an inclination that Azarenka would win because we've rarely seen Maria play consistent tennis. . Even though Azarenka won, the match shows again that her shot making is a league below that of the best ballbashers.

Maria's forehand is pitiful. Her service action also looks like it's all over the place. She's got no timing on the serve, and I suspect it's also related to the ball toss. Azarenka played the match with good tactics. Always making sure that she hits outside the Sharapova striking zone even when she's stretched, and of course trying to get everything back to the forehand. She also put so much pressure on Maria's serve.

Omg, they are booing them. Yes.

During one set and half Maria got bent over and then got spanked by her mistress until her buttocks were completely red.

Second time in two weeks that she is spanked like that by inferiors players who dominates her. Sad to see. She did fight a little at the end but too little too late.

I think there was some high quality tennis. Currently no women can produce the tennis these two showed us today (on the points Kim actually cared)

Apart from some errors, Azarenka“s form is incredible. Both defence and attacking. She takes the ball so early.

It was still worth watching despite Kim“s awful attitude these days.

Azarenka should go on to win the tournament.

Expected. :)

After I saw that match, Azarenka“s level was obviously the highest of the players in the field. Game-wise, she was going to win it, the question was only if she keeps it mentally together. She did.

Congrats Vika. I really like the tennis she plays now. This tennis can win a slam. Im far more impressed by her than by tentative Caro.

I could even say now that Vika will win her slam before Caroline. (Mark my words :)

Again well done Vika, if she keeps this up, we should look forward to seeing her matches. When Kim comes back mentally, theeir meetings will be closer than 63,63.

Geez, that was pretty much disgusting. Maria, you ruined my bday :sobbing: The only thing that rescues her in my eyes is that she kept on fighting till the very end, although when it got to 4-5, losing the serve was NID.

Maria deserves credit for fighting and digging it out, but when you're the superior mental player you need to DIG through. And that's something she just doesn't do anymore, the killer-instinct is non-existent now. She comes back and then loses her serve anyway and loses. I blame the serve, she can't hold if her life depended on it. And for some reason i'm doubting she's noticing it herself. In that last game when she was missing the first serves i was thinking, brush the ball, or put a bit more pace off. Just MAKE that first serve, azarenka didn't have the momentum to hit winners off a first serve.
Just challenge her.

Now she was digging her out of 2nd serve situations and obviously didn't have the consistency to keep that up constantly.

Besides that, i'm not impressed by azarenka at all. Just the same old same old. It's sad so many players were playing way below par these 2 weeks. It's really been a terrible tournament quality-wise.(And that's why steady averages like petkovic and azarenka made it through this week)

I'm happy the clay season is starting, i really need to see something else.

Great win for Vika. :clap2: Other than that lapse toward the end, this was a pretty good performance from her to get her second title in three years and move up to a career high ranking of #6.

What a disappointing performance from Maria. She could hardly do anything right for most of the match. We got a glimmer of hope with her comeback from down 0-4 in the second set, but her sloppiness came back to roost in the end. Still it was a pretty good tournament for Maria, who will return to the top 10. :clap2:

Congrats Vika.

Vika got tight up 6-1 3-0. Somehow managed to get back in Sharapova's service game at 3-0, got tight on the breakpoints and then needed to bits of luck to got up 4-0. Sharapova just played her usual hit or miss style, whilst Vika's game dropped a bit. Still a great job of closing it out in two after being broken when serving for the match and having two match points in that game.

A great tournament for Vika, beating Kim, Vera and Pova in a row is a good effort.

The contrast in this match was staggering. Vika played nearly flawless for most parts while Maria was spraying everywhere.
Maria's FH was non-existent throughout, same for the serve until she started her typical fightback (which tend to last for 3 to 4 games these days).
I knew Vika would win but I hoped to see nice, close match. I hope Maria isn't too disappointed.

Congrats to Azarenka for her 2nd Miami title. Masha was just all over the place today, but she did well to try and fight her way back into the match and make it somewhat more competitive. Hopefully she'll learn from this and start cutting back on her mistakes. Sharapova doesn't have to tear the cover off the ball just to hit a winner. She has to start constructing her points better. That would make her matches a heck of a lot less stressful and more productive. Great result, even though she lost. Azarenka was great, and hopefully she'll use this to build her game even further, so she can contend for more big titles. Hopefully, this is the start of a great season for Azarenka and Sharapova.

Dreadful tennis from Masha in this final. The serve, the unforced errors, not converting game points, but mostly the serve. It's erratic nature puts too much pressure on the rest of Maria's game, especially when it is a start to finish shambles nightmare like it was today. That was almost 2 hours of painful. :fiery::fiery: Azarenka was solid. End of story.

Well done to Vika, fabulous tournament and sequence of wins. She will now be ranked 6 in the world and could go up to 4 without doing that much if Stosur and Schiavone continue their poor form into the clay season, which is not unlikely.

Maria, bad performance but the main thing is she is back in the top 10 and like Vika, she could use this event as a launching pad for something bigger in the summer. If Clijsters continues to struggle and the Williams sisters still out of the game and the rest of the top five looking a bit shaky, this would be a great chance for players like Vika and Maria to do something big this year and maybe win a slam. Maria certainly has what it takes, though question marks must remain over her game; Vika's problems are more mental - she seems to have Maleevitis - a condition whereby you are unable to pass beyond the quarter-finals of grand slams but this may well be her year to break through.

Bogus. This was probably her worst match of the tournament stats-wise. I put that down to Vika playing well, Maria faced an opponent who would not just go away after a fightback (unlike Petkovic) and I think that made her a bit desperate which resulted in rushed play and wild errors at times.

Stats-wise yes, but you've already stated the truth. Vika was the very first opponent who appeared to be a good slow hard court player and also have some balls and physical abilities not to choke. Maria played the match even a tiny bit better than with Andrea IMO of course

I'm happy for Victoria; she played great. Mixed feelings about Maria. On the one hand, she had a terrific tournament. Got to a major tournament final, had a couple of real good wins. On the other hand, there is still a lot to work on. I've said this from day one, and I'll keep saying it - her serving problems are mental. No one can blame her shoulder anymore. When you can't serve well, that lack of confidence seeps into the rest of your game. She has to get over that mental block if she wants to really be a threat at the top. Everyone talks about her fight, but I'm still not sold yet. All these matches that's she's fighting in are matches that she should win easily. Dulgheru? In 2006 Maria would have blown her away 6-2 6-2. She still hasn't had a real signature win over a top player as of late. It's a mental thing. She gets dejected more often than usual, she slumps her shoulders more, and it's all between the ears. She hardly showed any positive emotion today. That's going to be a big problem going forward.

DownInAHole
Apr 2nd, 2011, 08:23 PM
Vika's celebration immediately after she won was a bit goofy but it was nice to see her so happy. This was a good tournament for Maria (as was Indian Wells) but she still has work to do before she will be a threat to win another slam. She's become Dementieva-like with her serve. If she could just skip serving and return every game she would be getting much better results. I don't know how she can fix it but if she can even get it up to being an average serve she will be so much better off.

It's kind of a shame for both Maria and Viktoria that the first hardcourt season is over. They were just starting to play well but on clay I'm not sure if that will continue.

Stats-wise yes, but you've already stated the truth. Vika was the very first opponent who appeared to be a good slow hard court player and also have some balls and physical abilities not to choke. Maria played the match even a tiny bit better than with Andrea IMO of course

LOL wut? Are you saying she played better here than againt Petkovic in sets 2 and 3? Did you even watch the same match that we did?

Really a sad match. Sure the wind was a problem, but Maria basically self-destructed. Azarenka was relatively steady (until she had to serve it out), but she didn't show much great play. Last year's final was awful as well.

oh FFS smile one time eh Ice Maiden

She, very lightly, bounced her racquet to the ground after she missed a shot today, I haven't seen her do anything close to that in over 5 years (last time I remember was AO '06 SF vs Henin).

what is strange is that all of Maria's losses have been in 2 sets in 2011 (in Auckland, in Melbourne, in Indian Wells, in Miami, and during Fed Cup). during her last two loses, against top opponents both times, she won a total of 8 games. these, IMO, are better indicators regarding her form than the tough 3-set wins against Alex and Andrea (or against Medina and Peng), for example.

I'm so proud of you, Vika! :sobbing::sobbing::cheer::woohoo:
She fought her ass off in her first three matches, playing with epic amounts of fuckery but somehow got through those matches and followed it with three straight set beatdowns of top notch opponents. Vika's game has been so dicey this season thus far that this win is twice as sweet. As frustrating as it can be at times, I absolutely adore this girl and her game. :inlove:

Maria has nothing to be ashamed of, sure she's disappointed and that's normal after losing a final. It can be extremely frustrating to play so up and down when you're used to playing consistent tennis. Maria has nothing but positives to take from this tournament though. Her serve is clearing up, it's still dicey, but it is improving. Her ground game is improving as well, her fight, as always, is still there. She's back in the top ten. If she continues this upswing, she'll be very dangerous come the grass court season and the US Open Series.

And for all those people saying that this match was a shitfest or it was too loud, ect: if you don't like who's playing; if you don't like the "quality of play" then change the channel. The end.

Thought Maria was going to bring it to 5-all, and then possibly take the match even without her serve, but that backhand at 4-5 30-all was unforgivable.
It was begging to be hit DTL.

wow, so so so so ugly.

Yes.Initially I was wondering who the crowd was booing (I assumed Vika because of potential sympathy they may have had for Maria's last minute comeback attempt) but now I'm convinced that they were booing both

Martha continues her trend of one step forward followed by two steps back.

Azarenka was keeping the ball deep and with decent pace even when under pressure, so Martha realised that she wasn't going to win many rallies, and tried not to get dragged into them when she could opt out of it (i.e. on return) - usually by hitting an early, needless wild error :tape: But on her service games she had no other option but to rally, and her footwork and FH just weren't up to the task.

And if she's getting smoked by the dreck the cream of Generation Suck (first by a flat out pusher, then by an aggressive but underpowered grinder) in matches that actually matter, one must ask if she'll ever win anything worthwhile again.

For me, it was hard on the eyes AND ears. I didn't hear the ball hit the strings once the whole match. This match epitomized everything that's wrong with WTA tennis.

This. I was really looking forward to the match. I watched the first set and up to 04 second, and left the room. Maria was dreadful - I was trying to remember how she won Wimbledon against Serena and the other 2 slams. The serve that bounced before the net was shocking. I cant think of any other once top player playing so badly in a final apart from Monica who once lost 06 06 against Hingis when injured. Maria has no such excuse.

And as for the shrieking it was ridiculous - even on soft shots both would shriek.

Plus all those wild shots missing by feet - it actually made me yearn for Caroline who at least plays tennis I can watch. I hope I don't see a match like this again.

She, very lightly, bounced her racquet to the ground after she missed a shot today, I haven't seen her do anything close to that in over 5 years (last time I remember was AO '06 SF vs Henin).

I saw that too! She sort of banged it on the court late in the second set, and that was a tell-tale sign in my opinion. I don't know what is causing her to get so down on herself. She had a great gameplan working in that set - hitting hard up the middle and then waiting for the right shot to attack. It was almost like she was mad when she lost a point - which is a good mentality to have - but just regroup and try for the next point! She didn't seem to do that today.

I pretty concur with what you said. Once your serve started falling apart mentally, all your game goes down.

You bet. As the serve goes, your game goes. LOL as if there isn't enough to think about when you're playing a match: "hit to the bakchand," "stay low," "attack attack attack," then to throw in holding your serve too? People underestimate how powerful mind games are in this sport.

This was a good tournament for Maria. She reaquired that ability to intimidate, shake up her opponents. She can be having a bad day, and all of a sudden, it starts clicking, and it really rattles the opponents. The next to the last point was a potential key--she had plenty of time to hit it toward the corner, but she hit it to the other corner, and it was an easy putaway for Azarenka to get another match point. If Maria had made that next to the last point--it was a mental mistake--not a physical one, her next serve would have possibly made the set 5-5, and from that--anything was possible, given the change in momentum. Azarenka played well, and stayed tough, but she was starting to be affected. Considering Maria having the flu, the ear infection, and the ankle thing--this was not bad progress for her this week. She will still win another tournament somewhere this year.

Meanwhile: congrats to Vika!!!

.....

Well, if you watch tennis players practice, they can hit the ball really hard in the corners and not miss, so maybe it was that she was playing as if she were practicing instead of playing.

OMGOMGOMG Vikaaaaa :sobbing: Love yaa !!!!

I was so happy ! Of course I will never be as passionnated with her as I was with Justine, but still she is one of my faves if not the biggest of the current ones (the other ones being.... Jankovic, maybe Petkovic and Schiavone) so I am really happy she is back on track.

Let's also hope Snickers won't retire during a Slam :tape: she has the potential to win one, like it or not. I have respect for Wozniacki, but Azarenka goes for her shots more often, and that is crucial in a Slam (cf Wozniacki-Li). Tennis needs a future star to win a Slam... I mean, Kim is a veteran, Schiavone is 30... We need big stars who will be big big dominant/forces in Slams... I want Vika to be part of them :sobbing:

I had to hang out with friends at 8pm, Vika was leading 6-1 4-1. I missed her MP and celebration... Knowing her, it must have been an awesome moment ! Who have a video of that? Please? :sobbing:
