While I wanted a better match, good on Vika for playing well enough to win it. She was scary good against Vera and was too strong for Maria today.

Maybe now this will truly help her rise to her potential.

Congrats to vika! was just a lot more stable. to be fair that was one great point though 22 errors by Maria in the first set, as you said it was 6-1 only 7 games with that amount of mistakes just doesn't cut it in a final like that against a top player like vika.

Yeah, we have British ES, British ES 2 and ES HD. I always watch HD though 'cause its a million times better quality than normal.

I thought it had finished on both because it went over schedule, but they must've delayed MotoGP (something which they NEVER do for trophy ceremonies).

I'm sure it'll be on YouTube or maybe on the highlights tomorrow :)

I tried to get online after the watching the final, but wtaworld wouldn't load for me.
I am so, so, so immensely proud of Vika right now. :sobbing::sobbing: Fighting her ass off in her first three matches gave her the confidence in her game to trust it against players she struggles with (Saint Kim, Bepa and then Maria). While Maria's serve really hurt her in this final, I like to think she was put on defense with it because of Vika's return of serve being so spectacular.

But this is such a sweet surprise from Vika after all the fuckery of the season so far. :sobbing:

And the Marbella draw is up, Vika's their top seed.

Most likely opponents:
1st round: Parra Santonja
2nd round: Hercog/Pous-Tio
quarterfinal: Pironkova/Safina
semifinal: Dulgheru/Errani
final: Kuznetsova

Not a bad draw, but it's clay and Vika's bound to be tired after winning Miami.

We were saying it too. She looked in very average shape early on in the year but she's in much better form now. Fingers crossed that she can hold on to it for the upcoming month or two, I believe she has a good shot at RG (if she avoids Dulko :o) since she also seemed to be defending really well in Miami which is a very important part of the game if you want to do well on clay. :)

HowardH
Apr 3rd, 2011, 03:15 PM
Honestly, she played great in that tournament, but you could still see some signs of her struggles in the early part of the year. Serving has been better recently but she actually only won 52% of serving points against Masha. Even in the first set, which she won 6-1, she only won 56% of serving points. However she was able to keep Masha to only 41% on her own serve. So her returning saved her. And the DF to lose the BP at 5-3, as well as the run from 4-0 to 4-3 all reminded me of her struggles in the early part of the year. There are still some issues, particularly under pressure and holding serve. She just returned so well and rallied so well that it was hard to notice. She didn't have to serve under pressure in these recent matches because she played so well in other aspects. I still find her serving under pressure very questionable. It's important to note that she didn't have to serve the match out.

However, that was still the best I've seen from her in a long while.

The issue I have with Vika is that she seems to get tired and/or injured after playing well. We'll see if she can sustain this form into the coming tournaments.

Vikapower
Apr 3rd, 2011, 05:46 PM
Vika'll reach a new career of #6 on Monday in other other words with nothing to defend on clay Vika can crack the top 5 for RG. :cheer:

It seems like contrary to 2009 Vika's peak form has started a little bit later in the season... could this be a sign !!?

In both 2009 and 2010 Vika started her seasons quite strongly but then after was never quite able to carry that on further...

I truly believe she has changed her approach about things... I also heard her by telephone on CNN after her win and she said in between other things how she has matured could it be in her attitude or in her game and that she was ready to bring that in the majors... so fingers crossed...

I believe also in her chances for RG... the road is still very long and we will be rapidly fixed in Rome or Madrid - realising the depth on clay it'd be presumable that a confident Vika would be able to at least get one of these.

Very solid match on the dirt after Miami.

I hope she has a good week here in Marbella, I really want her to do well this clay season and Marbella is a good tournament for her to attempt to win her first clay title. If she does, or goes deep in the event, she should consider pulling out of Stuttgart although it's been brought to my attention that its clay would be more beneficial for her game.

On paper she'll play Marbella-Fed Cup-Stuttgart-Madrid-Rome.
That's a lot of tennis, I really hope her body is able to hold up. And she only gets a long break again after Wimbledon (unless she gets injured, which I sincerely hope doesn't happen of course) so she could be tired as fuck by the time FO or the grass season starts. :scared:

That's what I'm worried about. She's played a ton of tennis in the last month and clay isn't the nicest to Vika as it is. So hopefully, she considers pulling out of Stuttgart so she can pay the two manditories and then the French without being exhausted. Also, I hope she doesn't play doubles again until the French. I don't really have any expectations for her on clay, but Wimbledon and the US Open Series this summer are another story.

I'm sure the main reason she entered so many pre-RG tournaments is because she knows she struggles on clay so she probably doesn't expect to go very far in the events, but still, if she does have a good week here in Marbella, she should take a break.

I agree, she should definitely consider withdrawing from Stuttgart if she goes deep in this event. Maybe even if she doesn't go far here in Marbella too.

Break My Rapture
Apr 7th, 2011, 04:58 PM
Hmm I don't know, I'm fairly confident about Vika's chances.
Safina still really isn't playing THAT well, plus her serve might seem to have solidified because of the increasing amount of match play she had but those were all against scrubs (and an out-of-form Pironkova), I think her serve will completely collape if Vika bombs Dinara's serve. Vika's hitting pretty well of the ground now too so like I said I'm fairly confident but there's also a possibility that she might tank. Although I don't think Vika is one for tanks. :p We'll just have to wait and see.

I really hope Vika's next match is the last match on. :hysteric: I REALLY want to watch it but if it's one of the earliest matches I won't be able to. :crying2:

WD Vika expected... :yeah: So now Safina !!? H2H indicates 1-4 and the last time they played was in 2009...

Most of the wins Dina has on Vika were when Victoria wasn't even yet really a top player... so 1-1 (2009-2011 : IW, RG) is more convinient IMO...

Just read on twitter, Vika is in a good position for cracking the top 5 for the first time. :bounce:
Probably because of Sam not defending her Charleston title, and Vika's recent good results.

Not sure exactly how many points she needs though

ETA: With Sam's loss today she will have 4606, Vika at the moment with 4470.

Potential Points:

SF: 4530
F: 4600
W: 4680

She has to win the tournament to do it this week, but if not this week a good chance to do it later in the clay season!

This is kind of inevitable... Vika is knocking at the top 5's door while Sam and Franscesca both actual top 5 themselves have plenty to defend...

Vika in her actual form should give maybe her best clay season this year anyways better than what she has offered the last 2yrs hopefully... the combination of both factors will make her a good top 5.

Don't think so, because she will now have 4530 points, whereas Sam still has 4606 points. She has to win the tournament this week to pass Sam.

Sam has to defend a Stuttgart F, Madrid QF, RG F. Plus she is playing Rome this year and she didn't last year.
Vika on the other hand has barely anything to defend.

Being ranked number 5 or 6 doesn't really make a difference to draws but still it would be nice for Vika to reach a career high ranking.

Vika in the SF :cheer:
Dinara

I really can't stand Errani and she is so lucky and overranked and I just hope that Vika can destroy her

About Vika's ranking, she will be #5 if she wins the title this week. Even if she loses in the SF, Vika will still be #5, but on the 18th and not the 11th. That is because this year Charleston is one week earlier, so Stosur's 470 points will come off on the 18th, not the 11th :)

So Vika will reach a new high ranking during the week of Stuttgart! :D

And I think her schedule is fine. I hate that the Belarussian federation picked hard so Vika has to go from hard in Miami to clay in Marbella to hard in Minsk to clay in Stuttgart :o. But I think Marbella, FC, Stuttgart, Madrid, Rome, RG is a good schedule. I am a little worried that she might burn out, but we have to remember that Fed Cup doesn't start until Saturday, so even if Vika is in the Marbella final on Sunday, she won't have to play another match for 6 days ;)

What I really liked about this match was Vika's serve. The 1st serve % was as low as 58 which is actually good. That means that she went for it more :D And she won 25/29 points (86 %) from it :worship:

I don't exactly know what HC is generally used in Fed Cup but they definitively have the abilities to slow down the surface and make have some similarities with clay... it would be of common sense to use a very slow hard during clay...

So Vika's opponent in the final is Irina-Camelia Begu, who took out Sveta in a 3+ hour marathon which means she'll be dead tired since she also came through qualies here.
Normally shouldn't be a problem for Vika but we shouldn't underestimate her. :)

I completely agree. Irina, who I've never heard of yet she plays a ton on clay, should be tired for the final. I just hope Vika stays focused throughout the match.

Nobody has lost fewer games en route to a WTA title so far this year, Azarenka losing only 19 (the previous-lowest was Caroline Wozniacki's 25 in Dubai).

Azarenka's 11-match win streak moves her from No.6 to No.5, joining Zvereva on the short list of Belarusian Top 5 players (Zvereva peaked at No.5).

Kanepi is indeed out of Fed Cup as well. I'm not underestimating Estonia, but it's going to be a walk in the park. Their highest ranked player is Rüütel at 437. It also seems like Vika isn't playing Stuttgart anyway, judging from what she tweeted to Caro.

I remember watching one of Kontaveit's matches against Spain back in February (there was a high-quality, restriction-free livestream on an Estonian Web site). She wasn't bad... for a junior.

Without Kanepi, the Estonian team form a rather dubious mix of very green youngsters and second-rate journeywomen. Having Vika on board seems overkill, but Kustova is a fairly weak singles player (she's 1W/8L this year :tape:), Poutchek has pretty much retired from singles at this point, and with Govortsova you just never know - she's probably more comfortable acting as Vika's sidekick than being thrust under the spotlight as "team leader".

She used it to withdraw from Charleston after Miami in '09, after she won Stanford last year and now she's on 12 match (?) winning streak so maybe it's just her standard injury when she wants some rest. :oh: Hopefully.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
I really hope it's not as bad as that statement makes it sound, I mean, considering she played a ton between Miami/Marbella/Fed Cup and rushed rehab to play here it could just be an issue of her rushing to recover instead of letting her body heal a more natural pace. But now she has over a week to recover before Madrid so she should be okay for that, theoretically.

It's always curious that Vika does tend to retire when she's winning, which is why, like Pieter, I thought of her citing the shoulder problem to get out of tournaments during a win streak. Odds are she strained her shoulder from playing so much recently (especially with the surface change) and it's super sore and she simply needs an extended break to recover from it.

I just really hope this isn't really bad and that it destorys her clay court season again like last year. :sobbing:

I told that skipping FedCup was the right thing considering that Belarus is playing Estonia which is without Kanepi. I hope this injury is not a serious one and Vika will recover soon.

Break My Rapture

Indeed. Her presence at the tie was totally not recquired in order to win it, she could've avoided this had she just skipped Fed Cup. :(

That doesn't seem like a tank and I agree either Vika should have skipped Fed Cup or as Hurricanejeanne was begging for since the start of the clay season skip Stuttgart which wasn't a necessary event...

Vika really doesn't have it to chain up events after events... hopefully things will be all right...

How unlucky for Vika. She really needs to realise that her body cannot withstand constant play. She just doesn't have that kind of body, unfortunately. She needs to schedule her rest more carefully, plan more like an older player would. As Vlada says, she tends to "chain up events after after events"- not a very normal English phrase, but I liked the imagery of it.

hurricanejeanne
Apr 21st, 2011, 03:19 AM
Vika absolutely has to schedule smarter, she's still scheduling like she's a 30-50 ranked players when she's actually a steady top tenner. Sure she's going to have weeks where she has rough tournaments, but most of the time she's going deep into events so there's no need to be scheduling so many events. If she was going to play Fed Cup, then there was no need to schedule Stuttgart.

Hopefully, between now and Madrid is enough time to recover since we learned last year that she's not fond of pulling out of manditory events.

Vika's back to tweeting which, as we all know, means she's doing better. :p

Hey guys! Unfortunately had to retire in stuttgart. Got a bit injured before fed cup matches and then its gone worse. Tried to be ready for
Match but with playing it didn't get any better and kept hurting me. Its very sad to retire specially when I was winning and I love this
Place and tournament. Its one of the best on the tour. But it was a smart decision, because all clay season is ahead. So now I'm getting
Treatment and hopefully will be back in madrid! Thanks for all ur nice support and messages! Love u
(had so super combine those tweets)

She sounds very optimistic that her shoulder will be okay in a week's time. I'm hopeful that my assessment that it was just sore from playing so much is true.

And...

Is it everybody or just my team that is eating so much chocolate for easter? There are actual fights who ate who's chocolate lol

Which means someone ate Vika's chocolate and the fuckery is unleashed. :p

This is kind of random and late, but can someone explain to me what the betting odds issues is all about. I've read through the threads it sounds like Vika took an injury time out at 4-1, which would be a reason to why the odds changed, regardless that she won the first set.

To me, the talk about it in the match thread sounds like people are just looking for something to bitch about because aZARenKA reTIReD AgAIn!!111111111

There was a long delay there yeah so probably a MTO, I assume for Vika's shoulder.
Apparently Julia was the betting favorite before the match according to some (which is very weird since Vika is on a 11/12 match win streak), then someone else came and claimed Vika was the betting favorite so it's all just attempts at slander from some posters here at this point.

Fingers crossed for a 100% Vika at Madrid. :)

Okay, thanks Pieter! I saw where a poster said that Julia was the betting favorite throughout the match, and then another poster posted a link to an all encompassing betting site that showed Vika was the favorite before the match and that the odds started to change midway, probably when she had the time out. Eh, what you gonna do? Haters gonna hate.

I really hope she's good to go for Madrid and Roma! I want a good RG. :sobbing:

I'm not nostalgic cuz destiny just wanted for Julia to be the 1st. german since Anke to win Stuttgart worked up very well...

Vika's destiny is plenty notches higher Rome/Madrid/RG or Madrid/RG whatever but... Stuttgart was a signal for her to play a reasonable amount but win bigger... so if she's healthy during that very important part of the clay it's all good.

Azarenka won back-to-back titles in Miami and Marbella in early April, but she was forced to retire during her first match in Stuttgart due to a shoulder injury. She seemed in perfect health Saturday. "My shoulder is good," the 21-year-old Belarusian said. "It was a smart decision to take a break, so I'm happy."
