Your taste in sound effects.

I'm okay with both. I love grunts :hysteric:

I'll always remember that simply amazing rally in AO with Venus and Zahlavova where both grunted as hard as they could, that was so hot!

I can't understand why it's necessary but players have been grunting for as long as I've been watching tennis so for me it's not really an issue.

Except when Schiavone does it because it just sounds repulsive.

I would prefer if grunting was kept to a minimum. However, when it now goes past the point of grunting and is just full on screaming--that's where I have a problem with it. Azarenka's is easier on the ears for me while Sharapova's is just brutal :help:

I prefer tennis without any grunting at all, or a lower exhale-type sound(Though most of my faves are loud,) But I had to go with option one. Pova's is a high-pitched grunt, but Vika's long, drawn-out falsetto simply grates my nerves.

Grunt makes the match seem more intense and more exciting :)

Both of their shrieks/grunt is fine. But I prefer Azarenka more than Maria. I think Maria shriek is too deafening to the ear. It's more high pitched than Azarenka, in my opinion. But I can't stand De Brito (she's like, take Maria shriek and multiply it by 10 times) or Schiavone (urgahhh...urgahhhh!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbLCvFSY1y0

Nadull doesn't shriek like a banshee.
His grunting is annoying, yes, but the women shriek and screech.
Especially Sharapova, her screeching is agonizing and unnecessary.

Azarenka's isn't agonozing, but it's annoying.

This match will be annoying, very annoying.

That was just funny if anything  And Venus' dress just made it even more hilarious.

Hate both. Can't imagine how they don't have sore throats at the end of every match, with all the full-throated growls, yowls and roars.

It has never bothered me at all. Some people seriously need to get over it, y'all whine harder than the players who actually have to face these "banshees" on the other side of the net.

Also, for me, it seems weirder when the grunts are deeper.
BTW, does anyone watch cougar town here? Because the Jules Ellie match had some good grunts

I don't like his moans.
The way I see it, if grunting is allowed, people should be able to say things on court. How is a tiny allez worse than a larcher de brito grunt?

Yup. :bigclap: Love them.

I get that some people don't like it, but Maria has been doing this for almost 8 years now. People really need to get over it. We've seen her go quiet in certain matches and usually she has sucked balls, so clearly it helps to energize and get her intensity up.

The grunts and moans are annoying, but I guess I am okay with the sounds as long as the game is sound ;)... They are competing at the end of the day and the side effects will always be there. If we ask the players to put their hearts in the game we can't really ask them to tame their reactions. It would be unnatural.

Very true, especially in Sharapova's case.

I'm really looking forward to this match. I was at the French Open quarterfinals in 2009 and the French crowd were audibly laughing at Azarenka's howls during her match with Safina.

The first time I saw Azarenka was at the Junior French Open in 2005, I wasn't impressed at all, she was literally imploding on the court, bawling her eyes out at every changeover, it was a strange experience  Then suddenly she had that big win at the US Open in 2007 against Hingis and I think she's improving all the time, I like the fact that she's prepared to come forward on hard courts to finish off points.

Yes, it will be very loud tomorrow, the Miami crowd are bound to take the mickey out of both players.

That's an interesting point, I've seen a lot of matches down the years, I've seen Azarenka live a few times including the Eastbourne final last year against Makarova. I've also seen Sharapova live a few times. Certainly microphones really accentuate the grunts, howls etc on television.

But I also remember Wimbledon 2006, I was on court no 1 watching Mauresmo v Myskina and I could hear in the distance Sharapova's screams from centre court! I later learned that day that Dementieva complained in that match to the Umpire about Sharapova's noise - that was really loud

BartoLiNa
Apr 1st, 2011, 09:22 PM
Even though Sharapova's is louder it doesn't bother me as much because it seems like it's something she needs to do. I think Azarenka's is put on with the intention of annoying the opponent.

I still like them both though.

The sooner they ban the Grunts and Shrieks

The Better the Tennis will be

And maybe WTA can be taken seriously once more

They take Nadal seriously and he grunts like a boar. It's ok only because he's a man.Take your hypocritical BS to elsewhere and focus on your rankings.

I don't mind that much grunting but both Maria's and Vika's are screams and shrieks and I think should not be tolerated. Where's the point in requiring silence from the audience when your opponent could scream even when you're about to hit the point? Not to mention it was proven that some of those screams reach harmful levels for human ears. Something must have been done about it but I guess it's too late now.

Maria's random assed shrieks are highly annoying. The only thing wrong with Azarenka's is the fact that is lasts so long she's still grunting when her opponent hits the ball back to her! I honestly don't mind GRUNTS whatsoever, it's the damn yelling that is simply over the top and annoying as fuck.

At 120 decibels the ear registers pain, but hearing damage begins at a much lower level, about 85 decibels.

http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/sci/A0835810.html

How the grunters compare, in decibels

Maria Sharapova 101

Monica Seles 93.2

Serena Williams 88.9

Lindsay Davenport 88

Venus Williams 85

Victoria Azarenka 83.5

There is a risk of hearing loss when noise is sustained at more than 90 decibels.

Sharapova doesn't even sustain a second. Its like glancing at the sun as opposed to staring at it for ages. Stupid argument. Just journos trying to hint at nothing, and the idiots who buy into it.

As other have said though, I do think Vika's a is slightly put-on. While Maria's grunts are gritty and you can clearly hear that she is expending energy while she does it, Vika's last for and age and are done with that horrible forced falsetto.

But again, I don't mind either.

I never get bothered by grunting, to be honest I'm too interested in the actual tennis to care about all the other nonsense that commentators and the media bang on about... I don't see why people would rather talk about that than the actual tennis on display - whether its horrible or good.

If people were so put-off by it they wouldn't buy tickets. If they do, then that's their choice and they should not complain if they go see it. I have no problem with it, perhaps I've got used to it watching Maria's matches. I still haven't got used to Vika's because I have a dog that sounds exactly the same :sobbing: but I don't mind hers either. Ones complaining are usually the ones watching their matches on TV.

Many people buy tickets in advance... what should we do.. sell our tickets once we find Sharapova will be on court?? :weirdo:

Additionally, you don't have to be on the same court to hear Sharapova. I've often heard her from the neighboring court or elsewhere on the premises.

When SuperRena makes a huge scream on contact point for a DTL FH for example completed by a huge Come on in the opp's face it's to gather power too !!?

Wrong.
Sharapova's screams are to put the opponent off.
All the screamers do that to put the opponent off.
