Well done ! Some cool shots, but let's be honest, it was an ugly match and Wozniacki was playing below her standards, she hit so many UEs, it didn't help her case either.

And she had a poor BP conversion. It also shows how difficult it is to win Indian Wells and Miami in a row !
Get some rest, Caro !

Good luck Petkovic ! and congrats !

Caroline's stats :help: It's not a thread against her, but this was the worst match she could play. This time, she deserved to lose.

If you had shown this tape to Navratilova and Evert 30 years ago that would have cried... :D

Whatever Petkovic says about her: Caroline Wozniacki doesn't do anything than bringing the balls back. And today she wasn't even consistent in doing so.

The first # 1 that is not able to convert the easiest short balls. Still not going for it... So sad...

Exactly -- I just saw her play in Indian Wells and she is remarkably fit, gorgeous really.

It was great to see Andrea play the final game so commandingly considering her rep for nerves.

Everyone's been saying Miami has been playing like clay -- Dulgheru is in the quarters here :D -- and we know how Wozniacki fares on that surface. Not as good as on hard courts.

Finally, justice prevails. Someone had the guts to step it up and take it to Wozniacki. Huge win for Petkovic. After that 2nd set, I thought she was finished, but I'm very glad that she battled on and found a way to take this match from Caroline. It's obvious Petkovic has the talent to be near the top of the women's game, but she must be more consistent and patient. If she can find ways to do that, kind of like she did today, she will start contending for the big titles. Great job Andrea!!! Better luck next time Caro!

New low. She was going to start losing in the clay season anyway I guess.

FH unable to do anything. Even when she got midcourt balls she can't drive the ball with any sort of pace. Had chances to take BHDTLs and played it safe CC(just like in her match against Li this year). She's still unwilling to take risks.

Gutsy performance, her shots penetrated Wozniacki's defense better than I had expected. Well done Andrea, claiming a new scalp in the form a of #1 player.

Ouch. :tape: Wozniacki was subpar but this result could hurt her confidence. There goes her winning streak at Tier I's, Wozniacki fans need to find something else to gloat about now.

Interesting game plan by Petkovic.

Tried to push herself, and not give Wozniacki too many quick cheap points. Directed the pushing to the wonky Wozniacki forehand, causing Wozniacki to panic when she had to generate her own pace off that wing and *gasp* dictate points. Hence errors flowed after Karolina realised she was not going to get the cheap errors that 95% of the tour gives her. Literally out-pushed.

Saved her innate aggression for certain key moments.

I hope this is not going to be how the sport evolves. :tape:

Mar 28th, 2011, 08:17 PM
At the end, she couldn't even PUSH the ball back in the court. At one point toward the end, Davenport (who was calling the match for TennisChannel) said something like this: We are not used to a No. 1 player being so defensive on the big points.

Blu€
Mar 28th, 2011, 08:18 PM
What a mess! Terrible stuff from Caroline, she just couldn't hit two forehands in a row! UE machine, and still she could have won that 6-4 6-3 had she taken those set points! In a way I'm glad she lost because playing like that JJ would have won easily.
Great stuff from Andrea at the end but I've seen her play much better. Good luck next round ;)

Says it all. When's the last time Caro had stats like that? She almost always has a positive ratio. This time her UEs were almost factor 4.

Obvious culprit: Match weariness.

Did people actually expect her to make the final of Miami after making the final of three big tournaments in a row and winning two of them?

Caro gets a much needed break now.

Congrats, Petko!

One word to those of you who expecting to celebrate today like a personal holiday-- haters-- one word to you: motivation.

You can't demand much motivation from Caro these days, the girl virtually forgot when was the last time she lost in the tournaments of the type. You gotta understand that mentally Caro is definitely not present at the MM event of Miami. Caro needs bigger challenge, 'cause current ones are laughable for player of her class, and she won't have one until Roland Garros. Needs rest, mental rest first of all, recharge, and onto clay-- rewriting our understanding about that being her worst surface.

Oh and that was a great streak, Caro.:worship:

Ugly match, Woz gifted Petkovic the first set and made the most UE in like two years which effectively handed the German the match in general. Glad that Jo Durie doesn't like the dance anyway  Now I need Jankovic to win to get my three nemesis all winning on a single day. C'mon

Disappointing match. If the number one goes down, you'd like it to be because the underdog played well but this was just a terrible match all around. Caroline and Andrea both missed easy shots constantly, I've never seen Caroline miss so many easy balls. Jankovic is the default favorite in that half of the draw now but hopefully Andrea can pick up her level a little bit and take her out in the quarters.

It was wonderful to see the Push go down to defeat. It was 12 years ago when Graf defeated the number one player back then named Martina Hingus. That was another fantastic day. Take notice Georges. Finally,Germany is on the board.

I'm SOOOOOO freacking happy not that Caro lost which is somewhat a sweat thing but that Andrea FINALLY !!

She needs to keep up these performances everytime... talent wise she's a good or better than a very big majority of the top 10 Caro first !!!

sammy01
Mar 28th, 2011, 08:24 PM
caro was horrible, her forehand was completely off. her game is so determined on her being incredibley on it with her footwork and attitude and the moment it isn't her game just falls down around her. her serve is basically a non entity right now to.

for petkovic, she might want to rethink her comments about caro. all petko really did was drill the forehand of caro, and watch it crumble. petko has a positive enough attitude to take the misses and the games she 'should' have won and keep plugging away.

caro deserves all the critisism she gets after this match, she was playing horrible tennis and never once tried to do anything about it. this type of match only fuels the fire of her not being slam or number 1 worthy.

oh and the stats were just truely shite for both.

The Petko Dance is always great to watch too! Too bad for Caro, I mean, she really sucked out there (not to say Petko was leaps and bounds better, though). Petkorazzi will hopefully go even farther in Miami! Go Petko!

Caro plays waaaay too much tennis. Now with clay coming up, yeeesh. Ah well, good run Woz. Rest up for Family Circle Cup (I think)!

I can't really consider this a victory for tennis. The strategy to rallying with La Push is to go push-to-push with her until she drops a ball short and you can go for a shot, or makes an error before you? Even if that's much harder than it sounds, it's still just kind of sad. Good on Petkovic anyway.

Terrible match, what an errorfest from both. Even Petkovic who won has twice as many EUs as winners.

She needs to keep up these performances everytime... talent wise she's a good or better than a very big majority of the top 10 Caro first !!!
They both sucked this match. Caroline played the worst match of her career. She usually makes around 10 unforced errors. Here she made almost 60. And still she won a set? Pathetic display from Petkovic. She'd get steamrolled 6-3 6-2 if it wasn't for Caroline coming off a 18 match streak with zero breaks. Last two matches from Caroline showed that she was losing steam. I'm surprised she got past Daniela.

Did I miss something or Wozniacki played 8 weeks in a row?

Indian Wells is 6 matches in 2 weeks. And then Wozniacki had a break of 4 or 5 days. The "she's tired" excuse is BS.

Anyhow, if some people, who I assume are "fans" since no objective person would come up with that silly excuse, really want to use that excuse, it still makes their golden retriever looks bad. If the poor thing can't handle that schedule, it doesn't look promising for her future, especially as the Roland-Garros / Wimbledon combo is as much demanding as the beginning of the year.

I knew she was going to lose. She's been mentally tough before and come through when up against it. The difference this time is she was an UE machine.Nothing she could rely on. Her FH completely gone and her BH leaking UEs as well.

I think it was it 24 UEs 1st set and 52 UEs in the match. Very worrying for Team Woz. Hope she'll work out why her game broke down and come back stronger.

I KNEW IT!! So much posters here said Caro in 2 I knew Petkovic would be dangerous! She's underestimated just because she choked once against Kuznetsova... This is just great :D It may have been a bad match but LOTS of players would have lost to Caro even if she played like that and the "she was tired"-excuse does absolutely not count since we know that Caro really never seems to run out of steem. She was just the worse player today.

Well done Andrea, GL next round!

What a World Number 1  :oh:
Indian Wells champion, Australian Open semis, Dubai champion, Doha final, #1 in the race...yes, world number 1.
If you had shown this tape to Navratilova and Evert 30 years ago that would have cried... :D
Why are Evert and Navratilova relevent today?

They played 30 years ago, their time has gone...they have no place in today's game.

Whatever Petkovic says about her: Caroline Wozniacki doesn't do anything than bringing the balls back. And today she wasn't even consistent in doing so.
She was really fatigued and tired...not her fault she wins everything...she was winning everything the past few weeks and couldn't keep up her form...oh no!

The first # 1 that is not able to convert the easiest short balls. Still not going for it... So sad...
The only sad thing here are you haters...
Glad she's out early.
How sad.
It took 12 years for a German female to defeat a number 1 player. Now Ana Petkovic made it happen. Anna, you made my day. keep the dance coming.
Her name is Andrea.
Quit making excuses..she got her ASS beat....:lol:
She WAS KNACKERED!
Anyone with eyes could see that, HOW was she supposed to keep up her form when she's knackered, tired and out of steam?
Tell me...
She can't, bad day at the office because she was tired...

Lucky Petkovic, you faced her at the right time...and even then, you had to work for the win.
I fucking love you Petko

Has Caro ever hit 52 UE's before? Watching that makes me feel sick :o.
I don't think she's ever been that out of steam before...
:bounce: Caro always flops at the biggest tournaments.
She didn't flop, she was tired...burnt out, out of steam...she almost won, she kept it to 3 sets...she could've won (and she was knackered). How is that a flop? Also, she won Indian Wells, which is the same as Miami.
52 Unforced errors????? What the fuck happened to her today???? If it only she would have 30 winners.....
She was knackered after winning everything the past couple of weeks.
Wow, I know a lot of people must be happy......Wozniaki will not win a title as prestiguous as Miami.
She just won Indian Wells
Bring me up to date.. (I am old :)), has Wozniacki won a SLAM, ANY SLAM???

A very 'tired' match from Caro. I don't mean physically tired but she looked mentally tired from the start of the match. I'm not sure why but we see her that way sometimes - one example was AO 4R last year - and she almost always loses those matches. I was actually a little surprised she managed to take the second set. She might have won the match if she had converted that first SP in set 1 where she had control of the point but Andrea hit a winner that just nicked the line, half skill half luck.
Caro made loads of UEs today, especially from FH. We all know her FH isn't a great offensive weapon but it's very unusual for her to miss so many ordinary 'transport' shots where she wasn't really under pressure.

Andrea didn't actually play that well, either. I haven't seen the stats but I think she made even more UEs. But with Caro's many errors Andrea hit enough winners to tip the scales. She played a patient game like she said she would and waited for a short ball before attacking instead of attacking from the baseline like she often does. It was good tactics today. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't have expected Andrea to be able to outsteady Caro in the long rallies but Caro was sufficiently below level for it to work.
So congrats to Andrea. I wonder if she will try the same tactics aginst JJ (presumably)?

Like so many others Caro couldn't complete the IW-Miami double. The pressure of trying to complete such a back-to-back win plus all the other hubla may be part of the reason why she seemed tired, but if she wants to stay as #1 she must learn to deal with such pressure and pull through also on bad days.
Caro is famous for her consistency but even she has limits. I still think title-4R this year is an improvement over last year's final-QF so the last weeks aren't a disappointment. Now she has a week off before Charleston. I think she'll be back to her usual self by then - like she rebounded well after losing AO SF - and we'll get an idea of what to expect from her on clay this year.

And I thought Williams sister fans and Henin fans were conceited at least they had a reason to be...wow to these Caro fans being a whole new breed

Saying she lost cause she's tired...lmao...she doesn't know how to play in wind as was obvious from the Open semis last year and she needs to learn how to make a schedule as well...clearly she shouldn't be asking for a WC to Charleston next week...and for those saying people can gloat cause she lost...we do that every major tournament when its actually means something...Interesting stat...when was the last time Caro has beaten a top 5 player?

Sally Todd
Mar 28th, 2011, 08:38 PM
IKR? she's incredibly strong,..the only issue i have with her, is that for someone so gifted athletically and physically, her stroke mechanics dont do her justice..

It's true. Tho there's plenty of time for her -- Stosur came a long way in terms of stroke mechanics in the last couple of years, and she's no youngster.

Petkovic's noteworthy comments about Wozniacki before the match just showed that she's studied Wozniacki's game, and actually went in with a plan. (They also functioned as a good psych job, IMO.) If only the rest of the WTA were that logical.

But Petkovic has a more solid game than a lot of the bigger hitters. Wozniacki is comfortable against the current brigade of girls with huge weapons because most if not all of them also have gaping weaknesses in their games.

lol at talking about a double when Caro Won Dubai, made final in DOHA and then won Indian Wells right before going into Miami. If she hadn't played Dubai-DOHA and made finals there (winning one), IW-Miami would've been a whole different undertaking. To make the final of Dubai, DOHA, Indians Well and Miami (winning at least two) is near impossible. Winning IW-Miami with a fresh body and mind is not.

Who else has won slams on the tour ?

Kim, semi-retired Serena, semi-retired Venus, Fran, Ivanovic, Sharapova, Kuznetsova.

And I believe that's it.
We could even say Fran & Ana were flukes (maybe Kuzzie as some anti-Kuzzie fans claim it :tape: ), so why would not Caro fluke a Slam? Think about it. She is only 20. Fran has won RG at 30.

It is ridiculous to attack her about her lack of Slam, I am annoyed by her game, by her passive attitude, when she tries too hard to be funny with the journalists, but c'mon, she is not going to lose only to give her #1 position to Kim ! It's all Kim's fault !

Because fact are not everything, people are entitled to an opinion but just because she is no 1 does not make her the best.

Amazing that you were even thinking about a final here in Mimai considering her Dubai-DOHA-IW run. If she'd made another final in Miami, I would've not believed her to be human. And she is, after all. She's been winning at a crazy rate, only one loss in over 20 matches, since match point against Li in January.
But this was a low level of play. I think she has to steady up the forehand side, today was glaring, some of the mis hits when she had break points.

After the past few weeks of winning everything, of course she was going to be shattered.

Yes, good riddance to the better player.

Would've been good riddance Petkovic if Caroline wasn't tired.

Because she lost one match when she was tired from winning Indian Wells?

What's your crap logic?

Wozniacki was really tired from her last few weeks.

Petkovic wasn't exactly good either.

How sad...

Because she beat a knackered Wozniacki?

Caroline was out of steam and was playing tired tennis...she still won a set, shows her fighting skills.

Why is she the female Andy Murray?
Have you seen Murray play?
There is nothing similar about them, except for the fact they don't have a slam...but if that's your logic, then you might as well call Zvonareva the female Murray

Bad Petkovic def. Tired Wozniacki....yeah, amazing day

Is this for real?? As a fan of TENNIS, and not a fan of particular players, you've got to be kidding me. By this logic, EVERY player who has every played in (and apparently won, or Marion would/should be subject to the same logic) a 2-week tournament should suck - and lose - in whatever tournament they play the following week. Caroline was clearly "off" today - no doubt about that, but I do believe the apparent game-plan of Andrea's had something to do with it.

No doubt Caroline came out expecting to have balls hit hard, harder, and hardest back to her the whole match...which isn't really what happened here. Andrea's clear decision to play to Caroline's forehand was a good decision. Andrea's ability to get to a lot of balls was also frustrating. I believe if Andrea can manage to clean up her game a bit, she's got a real chance to challenge the other top players.

Sorry but the "she's too tired to play" is just a pathetic excuse. Your player lost today because she wasn't on top of her game, played some sloppy points, and got beaten on the forehand side which is her weaker stroke.

Of course she wasn't at the top of her game.

A few reasons why she lost:

1. She was tired after all the matches she's played recently. It does build up on you, you know.
2. She was playing badly.
3. Petkovic wasn't as bad as her.

These 3 things added together = a Wozniacki loss.
Okay, tiredness wasn't the only reason she lost, but it was why her game wasn't working. Petkovic didn't play well either, but she wasn't knackered and her game wasn't as shit as Caroline's was today...
