I have a hunch that Ana can pull off the upset this time around, but she'll have to play like she did against Jankovic a week ago.

Kim's robotic BH CC pattern will cause havoc with Ana's game, even if Kim is playing terribly. This matchup is as loopside as Bartoli vs Vika or Sam vs Vera

though Ajde is so mentally fragile that I can see her lose this even if Kim is beyond pathetic :awww:

True.

Clijsters isn't serving that well though so there will be plenty of opportunities for Ivanovic to get the first strike with her FH, and thus avoid the rallies where Kim makes way to Ana's BH. The question is if that will be enough.

Fiona has the nasty tendency of playing very well against VIP, and Ana, on the other hand, is so mentally fragile against Kimberly and tends to get frustrated and very nervous throughout the match, resulting in very lopsided play.

Ana could win this if she plays her best, but as someone said, I´m just hoping it won´t be a rout for Fiona

Kim in 2. She's an awful match-up for Ana!

Yup. Prime Kimberley seems designed to give VIP nightmares. Returns huge serves superbly, retrieves with pace, is much more solid from the baseline than VIP and can both open angles and crank up the pace of the rallies at will. + she has the tools to discomfit VIP when she makes those BS forays into the net.

But we haven't seen prime Kimberley show up for a full match since last year's USO final.

I have a hunch that Ana can pull off the upset this time around, but she'll have to play like she did against Jankovic a week ago.

VIP also had a chance at last year's USO - Kimberley couldn't buy a 1st serve and wasn't even that solid from the baseline. But Kimberley went into GOAT retrieving mode, and got enough balls back for VIP to freak out and eventually self-destruct. I mean, I hate VIP, yet I almost turned away from what I was seeing in that second set. :tape:

So I really don't know how this will go. VIP has a chance, as I don't think Kimberley is willing to run herself ragged to win this. But I also believe that VIP really, really fears Kimberley, and considering the meltdown we saw from VIP a week ago vs Gâteau...

Granted MJMS's net game played a huge role in troubling Kim in today's match, but she actually managed to win a lot of points on the baseline with her rubbish junking from the baseline when Kim just sprayed errors.

Ana moves better, plays that sort of rubbish junk game from the baseline much much better, can actually be consistently aggressive from one side, and is an OK volleyer to boot. I'm not convinced that Saint Kim will have an easy time with VIP, simply because from what I have seen she really doesn't gives a damn, and when she doesn't give a damn she's susceptible to junk. She'll give a damn when push comes to shove though, and as mentioned, an "on" Kim tramples all over VIP, so there's no way VIP is winning this match. She could edge out a set if she plays well and keeps her cool.

You are right, I am completely aware that Ana has a good chance of receiving yet another beat down, and I fear it as I stated before, but that doesn't mean I don't believe that if she doesn't play scared and takes it to Kim that she still doesn't have a chance. If Ana were to do just that and win, we'd celebrate pretty hard, and I bet you would say that we're acting like she won a slam or something. This is Ana's chance!

She's 0:4 vs Kim: walkover in 2005, 2:6 1:6 in 2007 in Antwerp, was 1:2 down in Cincinnati last year and was forced to retire and another 2:6 1:6 at the US Open.

That makes 7 games in 4 meetings :D

A walkover isn't really a loss so the head to head is 0-3.

I think it's unfair to include the retirement in Cincinnati with the 2 full matches given that only 3 games were played, so I'd say it's 6 games in 2 matches.

LOL at all the votes for Ana. Probably the most overrated player on this forum. Ana at her best has about a 5% chance vs Kim, especialy on hard courts. Past her prime it is maybe 0.5%. The only way Kim loses is if her injury flares up that she is in so much pain she has to retire.

Kim is gonna slaughter Ana, and I love both and don't ever want to say that.

The reason why: Kim's backhand to Ana's backhand is such a bad match-up. Kim can get so much depth and penetration off of that wing that Ana will not have the opportunity to try and redirect up the line like she did against Jankovic.

Also, remember last year's U.S. Open? Ana wasn't really playing badly, but Kim stepped her game up from the abysmal first three rounds that she played.

so you think ana has a better chance rallying with kim on her backhand?

the reason this match is so one sided is kim's backhand crosscourt is the best in the game and it goes exactly to ana's weakness. kim knows she can restart any rally she is on the backfoot of simply by hitting a nice angle to ana's backhand.

Hmmm, not really. She can't generate a lot of pace on it, especially if it's a high bouncing ball. She does have an excellent backhand cross-court, the best in the game, no doubt. And she can change direction seamlessly and go for the dtl at will, but I disagree about ripping it.

Her forehand though is undoubtedly one of the best "ripping" shots in the game. Very few women can generate the pace and power she does from that side when they are behind the baseline.

Corswandt
Mar 29th, 2011, 03:58 PM
Just to add that, this being such a slow court, it won't be nearly all about serve & ROS as VIP's matches on faster surfaces tend to be, and that should favour Kimberly - if she's playing well.

i must be seeing things in highlights like these then, especially the ones where she saves SP breaks for 5-1 where she is outside the doubles court and miles behind the baseline.

To be fair, she has plenty of time to adjust it against a player like Stosur, I just barely see those kind of BH vs WS or Sharapova, players who can generate a lot of pace. She barely surprise them with a big BHDTL but more with her cross-court.

Think Clijsters, but Kim was vulnerable against MJMS,so Ana also can turn the tables, provided she plays two notches better than the way she did against Razzano.

I think the rain delay helps Kim. Both physically & mentally.
But she has to come right back against Vika, then probably Vera in semis.
Tough road ahead, but should win this.

I cant help but think Kim is going to crush her. Unless Kim plays absolutely crap herself.

Clijsters 6-1 6-1. Ivanovic never does well against Kim.

A classic match, not on tv. Miami is quite a tournament.

Unfortunately, Ana will be scarred for months by this collapse

I sense like 151396156352912 threads about this match. We all know why. ;)

Also THE SITUATION is something that marks JJ... Something for these two to bond over ;)

Also, Clijsters running away from one nuclear disaster while causing another one in Analand.

This match could be an absolute horror show for all you know.

Then again, you trolling mercilessly for Failniacki, so that probably wouldn't both you.
