Do you think any fans here on TF have influenced your thoughts about a player? For me:

Like
Jankovic. She really has a funny fanbase, they have a hint of sarcasm and I really started to like Jelena :)

Dislike
Definitely Radwanska. I liked her back in 2006-2007 but her fans here are so obsessed and annoying, they really put me off Agnieszka :(

I would like to think I'm smart enough to differentiate a fan base form a player... No fan here is an official spokesperson for any player as far as I am aware?

Everybody here knows that but still I think it has a certain influence even if I know that these poster don't have anything in common with Agnieszka. It doesn't make her a worse person just because of her fans. But I think it can affect thoughts in a certain way.

Wozniacki fans are overly-defensive, humourless and hypocritical. But I still like Caro.

If one is at first neutral and then sees that a fan base, I don't want to point fingers, of a certain Danish player, praises her to be the next coming of Jesus, you can't help but start to dislike the player.

Maybe for an emotional split second, but that's when you just keep your wits about you... I might wonder why a player attracts such fans.

I would say that the subject of a fans attention, would be more of an influence on the way you perceive a fan, especially if that idol was morally indefensible, but even then you need to realise the separation between a celebrity and a fan.

No... I expect people to treat other people with the respect they would like to receive, and treat them individually to that extent.

The exception to that would be a flamer, that actively cajoles, coerces, or bullies individuals to act inappropriately in their stead. They will get little sympathy or respect from me.

Actually, like or dislike is a strong word for that.
I mean, I used to argue a lot with a poster whose the avatar was Kohl or Youzhny, so I associated them with him. So I don't have good feelings towards them but that doesn't mean I dislike them lol, actually I enjoy watching Kohl playing.

About Ana, I liked her at the beginning, then the story with JJ... then I used to argue with an Anci fan  he had Ana in his sig, and he kept praising her like she was the GOAT.... that + the rivalry with JJ .... then her ajdes and fistpumps....
But if I had to make a reason of why I dislike Ana, that fan would be the last one on the list.

Notice I didn't mention Sharapova or Serena although most of fans annoy me. ;)

I respect Williams sisters, Im not the biggest fan but I dont dislike them. But I really dislike some people from their fanbase here. Once you dare to take the word 'Williams' in your mouth, they turn into crazy psychos calling you stupid, idiot or sth like that. As if only they had the right to mention their names..

But even if I dislike some of them a lot, it never changed my thoughts/attitude towards WS at all.

About Ana, I liked her at the beginning, then the story with JJ...
yeah, then jj started acting like a bitch towards ana and you started hating on ana. i mean, what else could you have done? :oh:

personally i still don't hate any player, but if that counts jj fans made me criticise jj's actions by throwing abuse at her since they didn't want to understand it otherwise. funnily enough it actually helped :oh: not with everyone, obviously, but then some people would never get it anyway.

i understand that n00bz on this board don't know about it, but there used to be time when jj hat0rz felt lonely in ana's forum.

other than that i actually have friends who like jj and dislike ana. no big deal. but if the question is if i dislike a certain fan base i'm still inclined to dislike jj fans. just like their fave they are full of themselves and upyourownarsage is never a nice trait. yes, plenty of people will like your sense of humour, but then plenty of people will tell you that you, your sense of humour and people who like it suck altogether. but they won't tell you that since for the most part they are not silly enough to pay attention to something they don't like. and personally i wish jj had a rivalry with someone else and not with ana.

If a fanbase makes you dislike a player, then you already probably disliked or was neutral towards the said player to begin with, so the fanbase just kinda amplified your negative feelings. I can't believe anyone would really like a player and then that'd change to dislike simply over the fans

Do you let players fans on TF decide for you who you like, I mean hasn't how they play nothing to do with it for you?

In my experience every of the top players have their fair share of annoying fans. This includes fan bases of Wozniacki, Henin, Venus, Serena, Radwanska, Vika, Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic and Vera.

I have, however, started to like Dementieva because of her fans. Too bad she's not around anymore.

Fanbases and players are two different things for me...although I don´t like behaviour of some fanbases (especially Serena´s or Masha´s), I still have a respect to Serena or Masha ...so it is upside-down-no way I will become a fave of a player which I don´t like before just because of funny fanbase for example:p...So TF fans definitely don´t influence me on picking my faves or dislikers

You've shown yourself to be crass and obnoxious. The posters who claim that fans of a player make them dislike that player are oftentimes hypocrites and hate what they see in themselves. They don't hold themselves to the same standard code they push on others instead using excuses to show how ugly they are inside.

Not sure a fan base has made me dislike a player, but they have definitely influenced how much I dislike a player

Primarily:

Radwanska
Ivanovic

Hian is doing a wonderful job of ensuring I take even longer to ever warm to Camila Giorgi, and iPatty will probably do Kvitova, Lauren Davis (and likely a couple of others) no favours in my books either.

Most of the irritating fans either drive you crazy because they harass the board with pleads for results and live scoring constantly, or they are basically just twats who are incapable of acknowledging when their player was outplayed and have nothing nice, or gracious to say in defeat, ever.

Besides what I've already said:

- being a pure fairweather fan, I've always admired the Dankatards for their loyalty

- same with many Dokic fans

- newcomers will find this hard to believe, but the Mashabators weren't so bad up until either late 2007 or mid 2008

- Mauresmo had a very classy, very mature fanbase

- I can't help finding the surprisingly large and mostly delusional Shriekarenka fanbase amusing (and I'm still sort of part of it, but only when Shriekarenka wins)

Hardcore Dokic fans used to be ridiculous at the peak of her success, they were nearly intolerable to me.

I find now as she is coming back through years of turmoil they have shifted - They are still a bit crazy ;) but I admire how many have stuck it out through the years to see her return even to top 100 tennis again. Success can be fleeting, and there was a time when many Dokic fans spent more time battling over her being the greatest of her contemporaries rather than really enjoying her finer moments. I think they do a better job now in simply enjoying the wins above anything else.

In my experience, players usually have the fanbases you'd expect them to have, so they mostly just strenghten my liking/disliking. :)
But I'm a bit creeped out by adult posters who support only players who are widely perceived as pretty/sexy/attractive (and no, Nikki, I don't mean you, and no, Max, I don't mean you either ) but there have been some with lists that went something like 'Kirilenko, Ivanovic, Vaidisova, Bondarenko, Dulko, Pennetta, Vesnina, Diatchenko, Pivovarova'. I find the idea of adult people following tennis just to gawk at young girls somewhat disturbing, and have therefore begun to look at players like Kirilenko (without any fault of their own) as players who attract only pervs, not tennis-fans. :tears:

I love when people say this about fanbases devoted to players who get shitted on all the time, particularly when those fanbases aren't even that big to begin with. It's like, you are part of a forum where your favorite gets zero respect, hostility 24/7 from all corners, even in threads that have nothing to do with her, to the point where expressing you enjoy that player will get you labeled as not a true fan of tennis. You comment on anything and it's "But you like Safina/Wozniacki/whomever, so."

And then you're supposed to not be defensive and have "a sense of humor". Nutso.

Serena fans here have definitely made me like Serena a lot less. I wouldn't have thought that was even possible, but it's definitely had an effect on me. AnomyBC

All this says to me is that these are a bunch of weak minded individuals who allow themselves to be persuaded based on the opinions or actions of others. This is nothing to celebrate people.

It's not that anyone is disliking a player purely because of their fans. What happens is that a player's fans can exemplify things you like or dislike about a player to begin with, and that can reinforce and strengthen those original feelings. For instance, if you think Serena Williams is arrogant and obnoxious, and then you meet some of her fans and they're also arrogant and obnoxious, what happens is that reinforces and strengthens those original negative feelings you had about Serena and further intensifies your distaste for her.

VIP was once one of the most popular players in this board. Relentless hype from the media (which couldn't praise her without simultaneously having a dig at other players, particularly Sharapova) and her OTT antics at the 2008 AO turned the majority of people in here against her. The "squeaky shoes" SF vs Danka was the turning point, a bit like Wozniacka's win over Dementieva in Charleston back in 2009. Beating players with large, devoted fanbases in TF is a big no-no. So I'd say that, for most people, the behaviour of Ancitards wasn't key.

i liked dementieva's fanbase most, but i loved her anyway.

i haven't seen alot of players in action - what can i say, i've been out of action for a lengthy period, but i usually decide my liking on a player after watching them for a mere few points. rarely do i change my mind afterwards, but it does happen more often than i would like to admit after seeing more of that player, or after a worthy triumph.
others just grow on me with time. schiavone wasn't my cup of tea back in the days when you had a whole bunch of italians - she was just the least favorite of them - now she's the leader of the pack, since vinci and oprandi aren't doing well, and others retiring.

i do tend to like the russian and german girls quicker - it's my connection with the countries mentality sometimes (japanese players too, in that matter).

A big +1 to all those mentioning Elena's fanbase. I like to think that I dislike Elena, but her fans (even demska) were quite adorable and made it difficult to root against her. When she retired, I was reading the SS.Dementieva thread, and some of the post got me a bit teary.

Agreed. Fanbases tend to resemble the players they worship.

Jujutards are often bitter, paranoid and want Kimberley to die.

Schnyder fans were often a tad offbeat so to speak.

Myskina fans tried too hard to seem edgy and "different".

JJ fans as a group act as flamboyant attention-seekers.

Wozniacki fans certainly are over-defensive.

this. Her fans actually made me feel bad that I disliked her so much because they were for the most part really sweet. the guilt has been eating me up ever since.

the closest I've ever been to disliking a player becasue of her fans is justine. I wasn't posting on the board when her fan base was in full effect so I never quite understood what others were talking about until she came back from retirement and they came out of hiding. they almost made me root for her against kim in that brisbane? match...and then I came to my senses.

And the last time I fan these flames:

The "fans of young players just because they are young" have made me into a h8t0r of a number of overhyped young hopefuls. Mostly because of their attitude - with any given age group of youngsters, they try to jump on the bandwagon or hatewagon as seems appropriate at the time ASAP, and so pick who they will like and who they will hate very early, often when those players are still in diapers, or when they manage to catch a few minutes of a livestream out of 25K qualies in the prestigious Scheißechloss Open, Niedersachsen. And they never, but NEVER EVER, change their minds, because that would mean owning up to an error in judgment. This leaves them no choice but to continue to praise and defend, despite all evidence to the contrary, players who, once they make their way to the main Tour (and televised matches), show themselves to be completely hopeless, and to denigrate some of those who turned out to be successful even though that seemed unlikely when that particular "fan of young players just because they are young" began taking sides.

But seriously, how many Caro fans go into other players' threads and stir sh*t INCESSANTLY? If you don't like her, why do you have to post the same :bs: over and over and over, in all her threads? I don't like someone whose name rhymes with Skankobic, but I don't lambaste her day and night. The Jujutards were never that conspicuous, at least not to me. Like their favorite, they like the low lights. I think in general they are arrogant because they think they support classic, beautiful tennis.

And yes, they hate Kim to death. There's no question about that. I don't actually. She doesn't do anything to me, + or -. It's funny how Justine/Kim and Ana/JJ turned out on opposite sides of the spectrum.

Kim in the nice, popular girl that every one can like. Justine is this aloof, anti-social with a baggage as heavy as she is driven through desperation for success.

Fans dont affect how I feel about a player. If that were the case, Sharapova wouldnt be one of my faves and I'd probably be a fan of Jankovic.

The worst fans on TF are those who seem to think they are better than other posters because their fave has achieved more than someone elses. It's as if they have deluded themselves into thinking that their faves accomplishments are somehow their own. Every fanbase on TF has its good and bad, though the Serena fanbase seems to have a lot more bad than good.

Don't worry. It's not like Ree/Veetards were very tolerable at that time. There were lots of wars and their idea of giving credit to Justine after Serena got another beatdown was something like "Serena played at 20%. If she played at 50% she would've won. But Justine played the best tennis of her life". And I actually think Serena even said something like that at the time. Or "Justine still didn't prove that she can beat a HEALTHY Serena outside clay". "Serena still got to three sets with one arm and one leg". Of course they were all shut down by the USO. Too bad the golden age only lasted a few months.

:hysteric: "on the other hand"

And she would own Serena in QF.
And she would own Clijsters in Slams.
But Pierce Brosnan would beat her at Wimbledon.

But you must be ready to see her losing at Wimbledon again and again. Ready?

I wonder if Vika actually reads us, since she and Caro mentioned "brainless ballbasher" and "pusher" :oh:

Vika, please, hire Carlos and raise the hand. :hearts:

:haha:

Just as long as she doesn't fall over against Kimberly and fuck her elbow up for good

But an early retirement wouldn't be so bad - just think of all the random TV shows she could go on and sing a song & do a dance

She must not stare at Kimberley's eyes of death. And everything will be fine. :hearts:

Oh noes :bigcry:
Maybe Vika would dance better than Justine. Remember how she was synchronized with the other dancers ? ROFL !

But it reminds me her picture with Wozniacki... IDK, it seemed they were trying to dance  too weird

But if she has a Justine like career, she would have her own street

There are certain players I want to lose who I used to like just so certain fans don't bombard the challenger forum every five minutes asking for scores....

Azareka fans remind me of some of my fellow Lena fans back when we were young and still hadn't had all our hopes crushed and our hearts broken and our souls destroyed.

I pity them, because I know what's coming. Yet I like her anyway.

Azarenka seems to have more fans now than back when she actually looked like she might be able to win something.

It's just that she's not the kind of player that I'd expect to develop a large, dynamic fanbase. Between the Jankovic and Safina ends of the spectrum, I'd expect Azarenka to fall closer to Safina, at least once she turned to hardk0re suckage.

I think she's more of a bad-tempered Hantuchova 2.0 myself. But she's fun to watch. Speaking just for myself, of course.

Of course, I don't stress out the way I did with Lena. It's really nice to be back to being a normal tennis fan again. Normal being a relative term, of course.

I wasn't clear about what I was trying to say, sorry. What I meant was that I didn't expect Azarenka's fanbase to remain this big and active once the initial hype died off.

I used the Jankovic and Safina fanbases as yardsticks for that, since they represent the opposite extremes re: TF fanbases.

Jankovic's fanbase is a whole TF subculture in itself: big, dynamic, attention-seeking, and has created a whole set of catchphrases and in-jokes. Safina's fanbase has always been very small (simply nonexistent prior to 2008; Safina was already a solid top 20 player, yet to WTAW it was as if she didn't exist); even in her prime her subforum consisted of little more than the same couple of posters replying to each other over and over again.

Agreed. Fanbases tend to resemble the players they worship.

Jujutards are often bitter, paranoid and want Kimberley to die.

Schnyder fans were often a tad offbeat so to speak.

Myskina fans tried too hard to seem edgy and "different".

JJ fans as a group act as flamboyant attention-seekers.

utter nonsense. clijsters is not even on the shit-list.

Never liked Wozniacki and Kvitova, but their fans make me hate both of them even more.

I think we should start naming the specific fans who make us dislike players. This thread could get fun. :oh:

I'll start. A_Magicman is the sole reason I dislike Greta Arn.

OMG :oh: why? :hysteric:

Oh, yeah, I see your point now. But I can see the Vika fanbase being like Dani's (and like the old Lena's)--just blindly loyal to the point of stupidity without quite the high profile of the Empress's following.

JJ's group is more of a fun party. Lena's and Dani's is/was always more like a bizarre cult that was/is never quite sure how seriously to take itself.

I can see Vika's going either way. It will be interesting.

cannot stand JJ's on court attitude and game, but her fan are amazingly funny

if i weren't a flavia's fan myself i would be because of the great fans she has here...too much fun in her thread

tea comes instantly to mind. I would cheer against any of her favorites simply because she supports them. She's comedy gold when she starts to stroke out because people are criticizing her players.

As an entire fanbase Dokic fans really don't help Jelena gain any fans. I remember the days when her every 1st round win in 25ks needed several result threads in GM.
