Tennis Observer
Mar 26th, 2011, 09:49 PM
Masha leads 6:0 (http://www.wtatennis.com/headtohead/samantha-stosur_2255881_7941/0,,12781~7941~9499,00.html) in H2H, last win in Tokyo 2009 60 61.

Odds leaning to Masha:

Maria Sharapova: 2/3
Samantha Stosur: 13/10

Winner of this match will play against Shuai Peng (CHN) or [26]Alexandra Dulgheru (ROU) in QF.

Maria leads their h2h 6-0, with their last encounter being a bagel and breadstick thrashing. Both seem to be playing well but Maria has only dropped 7 games so far in this tournament. Still, if Sam plays well she can give anyone a run for their money.

Who will win?

Don't think Stosur's kick serve and spin on the forehand will trouble Maria since she's so tall.

Maria should win in 2; Sam's current form should also make these 2 sets easier.

What these two have in common, however, is that, before this tournament, both of them have beaten just one top 30 opponent (Wickmayer at No. 23 for Stosur, in Sydney; Rezai at No. 22 for Maria, in Indian Wells).

It seems I am in the distinct minority that thinks Sam is winning this. It is a bad matchup for her but this is a big match for Maria and I think she might serve similar to how she did in the Indian Wells semi final.

Maria should win as long as she does not go into a double fault rampage and starts becoming an unforced error machine...we all know she is capable of doing that, hopefully Stosur can just make it close...

I donít pay much stock to h2h. However current form is something to gauge a prediction on. The last three times Iíve seen Maria play was against Caro in í10 USO, against Petkovic in í11 and last week against Caro in IW. Maria was pathetic in all those matches. Stosur is not as formidable as Wozniacki but she sure is clearly superior to Petkovic. So I see Sam winning by a break in each set something like 6-3, 6-4 or 6-4, 6-4.

simply said you are clueless if you have no conception of matchups in tennis then:wavey: There is a reason why Stosur is helpless againt tall powerful hitters - and that reason is her heavy topspin is not working against them. Another reason is that Stosur is erratic herself and won't make Maria to play countless shots to win a point. Maria in easy 2 as always

ROFL !! It's true... To be honest to Sam 5 of 6 of their matches were played period 2004 to 2006 and effectively Sam wasn't a top player yet...

Their last match was played in the Maria post-injury period and Sam got trashed... it is clear that end-2009 Maria had played much better tennis off the ground than she has done from start-2010 until roughly AO 2011...

Maria has found some form again and she only lost 2 sets to Sam in 6 matches... I don't think the match will be that very easy in the sense of Tokyo's 6-0 6-1... but I see no probs here.

Could you then list to me her weapons !? Her kick !? but Maria's height - handskills, technique and vision on ROS... Her BH !? but Maria is more fluent, powerful off that side... Her FH !? But how could she use it effectively !?

This is a K.O... Her so considered weapon (serve) isn't one anymore against an incredible returning machine gun artillery... so what has she got to hurt !? IMO nothing... this only in my very humble regard...

That's exactly why. I want Caro to face opponents she's struggling against and come through.
How much would the Miami title be worth if Caro's opponents in QF-SF-F were Garrigues, Dulgheru and Groth? No thanks. Give her JJ, Sam and Kim! I think I'd actually prefer the last scenario even if Caro lost to Kim in the final in a great match as opposed to cruising through against relative nobodies (and no, I'm not calling Maria a relative nobody).

Good points. She HAS beaten Sam and Jelena, but trails the H-2-H. I don't intend to be mean, but in the match at the YEC, Caroline had no chance. Sam didn't let her play well. That's the thing. She needs to take more initiative. Whenever someone plays aggressively and consistency, she simply has no answer.

Yes, you are. Woz's fans head are way too big these days
Anyway i'm sure a win over Maria at her best would be more impressive for anyone rather than a win over Stosur on HC but Maria needs to play a lil better against Woz for that to happen, so wait and see.

This is the equivalent of a squirrel vs truck encounter. Stosur is going through a rough patch right now, while Sharapova seems to be on the way up again. And the H2H shows that Maria doesn't even need to play her best tennis to defeat Sam. The only thing that might help Sam is that the courts at Miami are pretty slow this year, but I don't think it'll make any difference as to the outcome of this match.
