1. Why is she being compared with Martina????

2. I can name other players who can and did do it routinely; I've seen even Sharapova hit a couple of drop half-volleys :tape:

3. For someone who has been doubles world no.1, her net-skills suck )relatively) at singles, but mostly in the area of approaches or first volleys; in doubles, you are at the net anyway, so maybe those skills are not tested much.

4. I play with the RPM blast, and you don't get much feel with it. You need to get a good amount of racket on the ball to get it over the net i.e. its hard to hit touch shots with it.

This.

Many doubles players have very technically sound volleys, it's just they are unable to approach well enough in singles to put themselves in a good position, whereas in doubles, you are already in position.

That being said, I don't think Stosur's volleys are technically very good.

You could've tried using a better example.

You also could've tried not comparing her net skills to Martina's. :tape:

Stop using examples like Azarenka when you clearly don't know shit, Vika is a good volleyer and I'd even say that she's as good at the net as Stosur, in singles. Just watch:

The thing is Sam IS a good volleyer. People just expect her to be better on a singles court because of her success in doubles. Sam can volley better than 85% of the tour...people just say is average because she perhaps should be better at volleying considering.

well, i didn't really watch the whole vid (found the part where jie was in it), but um maybe stosur wouldn't have had such good highlights playing against an in-form player? and the description on the youtube video talks about how "brutal" some of the scenes were; well yeah, jie is not at her best

So??...the point of the video was to show a tight half volley from Stosur. Just because Jie wasn't at her best and no she wasn't, I agree with that...doesn't mean the scenes aren't brutal. Scenes can be brutal with one players coming back from injury and not finding form yet.

Also Stosur's highlights have nothing to do with Jie, if Sam hits a winner than she hits a winner...that is a highlight for Sam, nothing against Jie. Even if Jie wans't at her best it doesn't mean Sam can't play well...geesh.

Sammo, unfortunately screaming in someone's face will not get them to agree with you. All you're doing is make them try extra harder to disagree.

Sam is a good volleyer. It doesn't matter what half of TF thinks. The only important thing is she continues to volley well and use that to win matches.

What a fail thread. Based on this one shot by Stosur (which all players are able to pull off at some time) we're supposed to be convinced that she's a top net player?

I wouldn't believe that even if the made the hardest drop-volley in the world, because she misses easy routine volleys way to often to be considered anything close to a net player (at least, in singles).

Wrong. In the matches that she beat top players like Justine Henin, Serena Williams (French Open 2010) and Wozniacki, she volleys well. Volleying well gives her confidence to be more aggressive, thus giving her a chance to win matches.

The reverse is true. When her volleying sucks, the rest of her game can fall apart.

She doesn't hit great volleys everytime she plays top players though. In wins that she's had over top players, she may have had a good day at net, but I've seen numerous times where she's won matches in straight sets but a long the way, misses numerous sitters at the net. She's not a player who can consistantly win points at the net. Her volleying is never really that good to begin with, it's when her serve stops work that the rest of her game falls apart, or when she gets someone who shows how weak her bh is. It's not like she's rushing to the net enough to lose the match up there.

Of course Sam can volley badly and still win in straights. That's why I stressed the wins over top players - those matches stood out.

Again, I said her game "can" fall apart when her volleying sucks. Her game definitely falls apart when her serving sucks. It's all built around the strong serve (even the forehand).

I think we are roughly saying the same things, just emphasizing different parts.
