View Full Version : Sori heads to Europe's red clay tournaments - 2011 (Waiting for Improvement)

First tournament will be the 500k WTA in Marbella of the first week in April. She reached the semis there in 2009 and beat Kirilenko last year in the first round!

So, a good place for a come back! :cheer:

Unfortunately, she likely has to play qualies there... :o

Unfortunately, she likely has to play qualies there... :o

Playing qualies in her 1st clay event of the year will be an advantage. It means providing she get through the qualies she will enter the main draw with a couple of matches under her belt, full of confidence and adjusted to the new surface. And if she doesn't get through the qualies....well she wouldn't have gone far in the main draw in such circumstances anyway.

Shvedbarilescu said exactly what I wanted to say... it´s a good challenge to play qualies if she passes into MD she can take an advantage of playing qualies I think it can only help her... hope we´ll see some improvement....

I don´t know if its good because if she loses in Q I will die! and marbella isn´t 220k its 500k I think so more points tougher players

Curcubeu
Mar 27th, 2011, 09:31 PM
Oh, yes you are right, but the WTA points are the same compared to 220k! :)

I don't know if you guys realize this, but this clay court season will be the most important 2 months of Sorana's career :scared:
This can make or break her. If she doesn't find her form here, I don't think she will ever live up to her potential :o

Curcubeu
Mar 29th, 2011, 11:30 AM
Why do you think so?

Rovegun
Mar 29th, 2011, 04:00 PM
hopefully hellas is not right but it can happen like he/she says (sorry don´t know you gender)... Sori has a lot of potentila she´s still young and she can come back to her best but meanwhile it is taking a lot of time to get her where she was in 2009... hopefully this clay season will help her... Marbella will show us first signs...

hellas719
Mar 30th, 2011, 02:31 AM
Why do you think so?

She is wasting time with her slump. Look at her peers. Look at Wozniacki, Azarenka, Pavlyuchenkova, A.Radwanska, etc. Then look at Sori. Do you see the difference? Sori should be right up the with those girls in the top 20. But instead she isn't. She had chances over the past two years to do better and she couldn't. It isn't going to get any easier for her. If she doesn't have a good clay season, I doubt she'll do well during the rest of the year. This part of the season is where she should win her matches. If she can't win on clay, she won't win on other surfaces. She needs to improve her ranking and play more matches. This is the only way for her to gain some consistency.

Curcubeu
Mar 30th, 2011, 07:26 PM
Agree, but there is still something which annoys me a lot. It's not in doubt that Sori is in a big slump, the biggest of her career so far, but it seems to me that many people easily forget that she has always been an up and down player. Consistency?, she never knew what that means! :o

In her so often called breakthrough season 2009, she has lost everything and all matches on Hard (getting destroyed by Koryttseva in Miami with 1-6, 2-6 :hysteric:) until the clay season started. Then her sensational run at the French Open followed. After that some signs of consistency and she seemed to have got her game together. Another great semi at LA on hard, where she was able to beat Woz, finally kind of established her among the new upcoming and promising youngsters.

But though having such great runs, she just finished the year at #39 showing that even at that time she slumped at some parts of the season. Last year she has also been inconsistent, too inconsistent and was of course not able to defend her points because she didn't have even one run at a bigger event... :o

Looking at the start of this season, she is playing obviously better than in the early session of her best year 2009 so far or at least more successful beating Top 100 players like Lucic, Barrois, Dushevina and Scheepers, the first three all in straights!

I know it might sound a bit strange or provoking, but I am more than sure that she is likely to have another run this year, maybe like in 2009 when we wouldn't expect it at all! Her game is super effective when things are working out and when she feels fit enough!

We will see! Stay optimistic! ;)

vuhvuh
Mar 31st, 2011, 01:52 PM
Her schedule is Marbella, probably Fed cup, then Barcelona, Madrid and probably Rome. Anybody knows how is it with fields in Barcelona and Estoril, she had ever good results in Estoril but she chose barcelona. Which I don´t know if it´s good because there is a better players list than fo estoril. Either she may not play Rome she didn´t last year. LAst year she played both Barcelona and Estroil, but they changed the dates. Cat believe she was ranked around no. 40! =(

Curcubeu
Mar 31st, 2011, 02:03 PM
She has a semifinal to defend in Estoril and choses Barcelona with a traditional stronger field?

Bacelona has 11 Top 50 players while Estoril has just 5. Well, she would have to play qualies in both tournaments, but wouldn't be seeded in Barcelona at the moment...

vuhvuh
Mar 31st, 2011, 06:48 PM
she said she likes spain but I think she should chose estoril too

she replied me on twitter today like three times also sania so happy kinda cool! She said she hopes to play strasbourg also. Now she is in amsterdam. simply I love her! somebody on twitter here writing in english hmm??

Curcubeu
Mar 31st, 2011, 09:38 PM
Great news!
If she is participating on that WTA project, she really should keep in touch with her most loyal fans! :)

Strasbourg is the week before French Open, where she had to play qualies last year because she signed in too late... :o
Due to that fact and because the Premier of Brussels is played the same week, this tournament usually doesn't have a strong field!

Let's see what she can do there! :cheer:

Seeing Sori on the red clay always reminds me of that great run she had at the FO'09 :sobbing: That match against Jankovic

I always get my hopes when she plays on clay. Hope she has a good clay court season.
I think it would be better if she played Estoril instead of Barcelona.

Curcubeu

She won't give her any pace and I am afraid Sori will become an unforced error machine, then...

Really tough to tell don´t know what to expect from errani so hope for as tream if she would have won she could make QF I think. But errani definitely favourite =( she had good run in pattaya, also beat from better players Groth in IW and made it pretty tough for Kim then. don´t think sori will win but I don´t want another early exit =/ btw Sois going to play stuttgart which I don´t understand why with her ranking she rather should play fes but on the other hand at least she plays lot of tourneys! Go Sori!!

And just notice she lost to her 63 62 last year in Monterrey and it was better Sori I would say so no way!!! Miracle??? Please

Rovegun
Apr 3rd, 2011, 08:19 PM
every match is different and it doesnt depend on how you played the previous match against the same opponent... the most important is a current form which Errani has better and overall she´s Italian she loves playing on clay but we could see Sori has made a progress from last year even though it´s a small step but I believe she can overcome Errani and make us happy...

Curcubeu

But I think an even slower clay surface would be an advantage for Errani rather than Sori!

actually she didn´t surprise me that much against peer she wasn´t happy with her play and that says a lot to me that was just few return winners she can do so much better!!! Go Sori and show it! stream doesn´t seem to be best quality but I definitely watch it

(8)Sara Errani def. Sorana Cîrstea 1:6 6:4 6:2 :help:

Always repeating the same problems... :o

Top 20 level in the first set, brilliant service games and spectacular winners. :woohoo:
Second set also decent compared to her results that year, but got broken at 4*-5 with a DF... :o
Third set was back to mediocrity, immature, brainless and lost before it already began...

She should work together with some psychologist, really...

No surprise for me here knowing she is so mentally fragile. Another glorious step towards Top 300 :wavey:

Rovegun
Apr 4th, 2011, 08:19 PM
I dont find her match bad I think she played very well two sets she was a little bit unhappy in the second set... unfortunately I knew that when she loses the second one she will lose the match... she lost the third 6-2 but it was a very close set I think... overall she played solid Sori had a lot of strong strokes she played fantastic in the first one and the second was very tight.... her problem seems to be her mental strenght but her play is better in my opinion... Sorana has still a long way to go I think no one thought it could last so long but she needs to win some matches to get back on the track some winning matches will bring confidence to her

She really should beat mediocre players like Errani :(

Errani is at least Top 50! :)

Sorana and Camerin won their doubles, 4 and 1.

hellas719
Apr 9th, 2011, 04:44 AM
^Then lost 3 and 2 to (1) Errani/Vinci

@Curcubeu: Errani doesn't have a lot of talent though. She is scrappy and gets a lot of balls back but she's overranked and plays all of the weak events and racks up cheap points to get a top 50 ranking. If Sori was playing like RG 2009, she would've won 6-2 6-2

Curcubeu
Apr 9th, 2011, 09:04 AM
I didn't deny that she isn't the best player. In the first set Sori managed to overpower her and made Sara looking like a junior, not talking about her crappy serve, but when she was once in pusher mode, Sori became the old unforced error machine we know these days. :o

Nena_xxx
Apr 10th, 2011, 08:30 PM
What's Sori schedule in next few weeks?

vuhvuh
Apr 10th, 2011, 09:02 PM
don´t know if there is some fed cup for her but she flied today somewhere and she will probably play Q Stuttgart and then barcelona probably rome and then madrid

Curcubeu
Apr 10th, 2011, 10:43 PM
no fed cup this week for the Romanian team because they are not in any world group, but after that only the biggest tournaments every week... :o

I hope this is paying off...

Rovegun
Apr 10th, 2011, 11:40 PM
I´m not sure if she can play with her rankings some of the big tournaments.. she´ll be glad if she can play Q at least... on Monday she is falling down again and I am asking how deep she can fall down? if you look at her last 5 matches all were played in 3 sets which shows something..... it seems her mental problem remains because I think her display looks better but she´s always put on her knees... first set against Errani showed she´s still able to beat Top 50 players she played amazing but she couldn´t break Errani in the second where it was very tight and then she didn´t have strength to come back in the third.... she needs to win a few matches in a row and get back...

Curcubeu
Apr 11th, 2011, 12:16 AM
Yeah, it's her mental instability which caused the loss against Errani. No doubt that she can have a surprising run somewhere when she is able to fully focus on her game and of course stay injury-free. :)

vuhvuh
Apr 11th, 2011, 03:57 PM
I already see her playing RG Q she won´t get the points to be in top 100 I think and considering she wil have to play Q like evrywhere now maybe also at 220ks so but maybe it will be a good test. still I think she should play fes and not stuttgart. I knew this season will be even worse still big chance for a comeback but to me she doesn´t seem confident enough to do it.

Nena_xxx
Apr 11th, 2011, 09:15 PM
She could play some ITF this week.

Curcubeu
Apr 11th, 2011, 09:34 PM
I don't know her personal attitude very well, but sometimes I have really the feeling that playing an ITF would be the least thing she would be willing to do...

I mean she is out of Top 100 for 2 weeks now and has a semi in Estoril to defend before the French Open what will be more than difficult in her current slump. By the way, with those 130 points less she would be ranked #131 :tape:

Instead of playing this actually weak 100k ITF where she could earn some easy points, she passes her time with sponsoring events of the WTA show she participates in.

Instead of playing the rather weak WTA tournament in Fes next week, she is playing Stuttgart qualifiers where it will be even a success for her to reach the main draw. But even this wouldn't give her more than 20 tiny WTA points... :weirdo:

Then, the next week she could have a try on defending her semi in Estoril, her currently best WTA result of the last year, but no she is playing Barcelona qualifying. The earnings would be sensational 16 WTA points if she reaches the main draw! :woohoo:

So, even if she would qualify for all those tournaments, she will lose many points and positions. (20+16=36, 36-130=-94) = a place outside Top 120 and FO qualifying... :sobbing:

So the only thing we could do, is hoping that she will have a surprising run either in Stuttgart or in Barcelona...

But I have to agree. I really, really cannot understand why she isn't mixing her schedule with some big ITF tournaments...
She would definitely win some matches there, would gain some easy points and more confidence. But apparently she feels self-confident enough, though her decline in the Errani match proved the contrary to me... :o

Meelis
Apr 11th, 2011, 10:55 PM
She did play in Midland. Also three ITF´ s last year.

I already see her playing RG Q

No, she won´t. RG cut-off is this week and she will be in. Though Wimbledon QD is possible.

Nena_xxx
Apr 12th, 2011, 05:48 PM
Her ranking is droping so fast. And with such low ranking, she will have to play a lot of qualifications this year on some strong tournaments. I do not think that she realizes that her main problem is not having a coach. Someone to help her 24h a day. Not when he has free time. Untill she finds good coach, she ain't going nowhere. :help:

Curcubeu
Apr 12th, 2011, 05:55 PM
To play qualifications at Tier I tournaments wouldn't be a shame, but qualies at 220k's... :help:

She has to find a good and experienced coach who knows how to deal with mental problems. I really wonder why she can't find one on her own and still stays in those Adidas team where she has to share coaches with other players who are not in her serious situation...

Rovegun
Apr 12th, 2011, 08:24 PM
I really don´t understand the Adidas coach system some players have own coaches some don´t... apparently best players have their own coaches but I´m not sure if even Caro has her own ones... I would understand that system if every player had own Adidas coach it would be normal he would have own ideas how he can see his player on court how his player should play etc. but in this system one coach can say play it with this way another one says play it this way maybe I am wrong but I don´t think it´s the way how to prepare a player for being Top 50 or so....

Curcubeu
Apr 12th, 2011, 08:32 PM
Ivanovic' coaching chaos is also well-known and one explanation for her inconsistency and Caro, her official coach is her father, but she is mentally so strong that this system doesn't affect her negatively - she is a worker.

Concerning Sori, I hope that she will find the right coach in the future, but I don't know when. Best would be as soon as possible! :)

Rovegun
Apr 12th, 2011, 08:52 PM
exactly, Ana´s case is the right one! but at least she had her own fitness coach... I don´t know if Caro´s father is her official coach because I´ve heard he said he´s not a coach at all but it´s right I´ve never seen Sven or Mats Merkel going on court to support Caro it has always been her dad...

it would be interesting to take a look how many players are in Top 10 from Adidas from both ATP and WTA... Murray, Verdasco on mens side and Caro on womens side... Adidas coach system can be one of the reasons of all I said...

vuhvuh
Apr 13th, 2011, 07:39 AM
Actually I don´t know kirilenko and morita work with adidas team but have their own coaches and Sori has her own fitness coach too. Maybe she will realise after she will have to play Q everywhere somewhere not getting even there and playing itfs

From all the "Hot Shots" girls, Sori has by far the most new found "friends" on facebook. She is leading by far with more than 27.000 entries!

Sori!

But honestly, did it influence her performances on court in a positive way? NO :o
She is still in a slump. :ras:

Better having only 1000 "friends" like Mattek-Sands and playing Top 40 than having many fans who get disappointed week by week and being ranked outside Top 100...

However, it was even a bad decision to go to Stuttgart only because of the show instead of playing in Fes shere would have got a main draw spot.

Apr 25th, 2011, 04:27 PM
yes she did she haven´t much to defend now cause she will lose those points from estoril. she just has to defend 60 points from barcelona and two QF in istanbul and copenhagen. This itfs wot help her cause if she won´t win or be in the final those points are for nothing. She needs some SF at WTA pretty urgently I think

Curcubeu
Apr 25th, 2011, 04:34 PM
100K ITFs have also many points to distribute! For example Oprandi reached a decent Top 100 position last year without having a lot of success on the WTA.

The same goes for players like Gallovits, Lepchenko or Rodina...

So starting to win some ITFs could definitely be a good start! :)

HowardH

It's a great opportunity to make the maindraw, but let's not worry too much about it.

Realistically, Sori needs to be able to return to wta level, but it's not the end of the world if it takes her some time. If she makes the SF, great, but otherwise, she should still be able to return to a high level. It just might take a little while. I don't think it's a total disaster if she misses out on Wimbledon MD. My aim for her would be to be able to enter USO MD.

Anyway, all this is besides the real point. If Sori plays a high level of tennis, eventually rankings and entry for tournaments will start to take care of themselves. So the only important thing is that Sori starts playing better.

Edit: of course the problem is there is no guarantee Sori will start playing better anytime soon...

Not seed is not seed, no matter if 33 or 95. If I remember correctly, Sorana was the highest ranked unseed last year and had to play against the previous champ Kuznetsova then!

She has good memories on RG! She can beat Patty, I'm sure of that! :cheer:

The only thing which concerns me is her injury from Prague.

The only bad thing is the flat camera there and the resulting perspective. That's really annoying especially if your favourite plays on the opposite side! :o

Sorana Cîrstea def. Alexandra Dulgheru 6:2 7:5

Alexandra

Apparently she played well in the first set, but it was very close in the second indeed where she was trailing 4-5, but broke her compatriote at the right time to finish it in the end!

I'm so proud of you , though I'm sad for Alexandra!

Now take out Li Na! :fiery:

French Open, Round 3:

(6)Na Li def. Sorana Cîrstea 6:2 6:2

Li was too good today!

But Sorana could have made it a bit closer if she had found means to break Li's rythm like drop shots or more slices for example. She also hit too few ankles to move her a bit around...

Actually it was a Hard Court game on clay both players rushing the ball through the middle of the court and most often the player who didn't make the error won, and that was in 80% of the cases Li... :o

But Sorana's serve, especially the first serve has improved a lot and she can build up on that by adding more consistency to her game! :)

Now get ready for the grass court season! :cheer:

Thanks for your account of the match Curcubeu. I didn't see it so it's interesting to read what happened. Yes, I didn't think Sorana would be able to beat Li especially since she, up until this tournament, was playing very poorly, but it still has been a good tournament for her.

I hope you don't mind, I slightly corrected the English in your post. I bolded the parts I changed. I'm a native speaker of English, plus I studied English at university, so sometimes I feel tempted to correct little mistakes. Don't worry, your English is very understandable, I just felt like editing it today.

Hopefully Sorana can produce some good form in the grass court season.

I expected a little bit more from Sorana. At least some nice shots down the line, some change of rhythm. Still can't believe how she stopped using her head in 1st set, and continued to hit balls towards to Li, like she was her partner on training. Lack of using her head, for sure, is still problem.
