Safina  Oh well at least it's a 3-setter:hug::angel:

Bitter sweet result for me. :s

Dinara seemed to collapse after being broken in the 3rd. Hopefully she takes the positives from this match and is a force on the clay.

Bepa. Good win, please find your Doha form again...

If Vera beats Groth, Bartoli is looming. That's going to be quite a match.

Even though she didn't win, Dinara is really working her way back. Some off matches will happen (Masha/Dinara), but I think she be able to get back to a reasonable ranking (Top 25) this year (I hope).

head 2 head isn't relevant because Marion is moving this year much better than previous years and looks much leaner, she has a chance against Bepa .

Believe it or not, I look at the level of play.
Bartoli was very good in set 2 of the IW final. Vera against Domi, not so much.

All Vera will have to do is vaguely change the direction of the ball, and it's GSM.

Which is much the same reason why Shriekarenka also pwns Gâteau. She's fairly easy to wrongfoot, and there are few players in her ranking range against whom it is easier to hit winners from the baseline.

Depends on Vera's level. Its not only matchups, except for Vera-Sam. Vera tanks those for some reason.

I don't think it matters how lean Bartoli is, any player that keeps the ball in play and forces her to do a lot of running will pose a significant threat to her. Vera, apart from being a very competent defender, is also quite difficult to overpower, unless the player on the other side of the net is Kim, Venus or Serena. Bartoli is going to have to be prepared to hit a lot of extra shots should they meet.

I think their last meeting was the 09' AO QF, where Bartoli had trashed Jankovic in the previous round, but was comprehensively out played and out maneuvered by Vera. Either way, a potential match up would be a proverbial "measuring stick" to see how much Bartoli has improved from a couple of years ago.

Nope. Their last meeting was Beijing 2009 and Bartoli won 3:6, 7:5, 6:2.

They played in Beijjing that year and Marion won in 3, coming back from a set and 1-5 down :p

Vera was still not mentally back in form, had some other meltdowns too.

Marion played some very good tennis though, and did lead 3*-0 in the first set set before losing 6 games in a row.

If you remember Vera against Flavia in the USO, thats how Vera was then. She won IW 2009, but had a bad fall at Charleston, and really wasnt the same until 2010.

It's such a shame Dinara had to run into Bepa, but at least she acquitted herself nicely. I hope Dinara sees the positives in this match and takes some solace in the fact that she went toe to toe with the number 3 player in the world and the 2010 Wimbledon and U.S Open finalist. :)

Good luck in the next round Bepa. :yeah:

WTF is wrong with Zvonareva? :help:

Why is it that she is playing so poorly and needed 3 sets to beat a slumping Safina? This is really bad and worrying. Where is her Doha form?

This level of play ain't gonna cut it for her if she is to win the tournament. Lets hope she can get her shit together in the later rounds. She hasn't looked good ever since her Doha win.

As Marion went deep in I/W, do you think she's got the fitness level for a repeat performance in Miami? .. Must say, I'm personal very sceptical on that.

As for Safina, taking a set from Vera cannot be too bad, when one is coming back into form.

Damn.

Still considering just a couple of months ago she lost 6-0 6-0 to Clijsters and 6-1 6-0 to Bartoli..and even 6-2 6-0 to Sharapova last week, this result isn't too bad. She's slowly getting her way back. :)

Safina has been really lucky with her draws this year.

Auckland vs. #2 seed
Hobart vs. #1 seed
Australian Open vs. #3 seed
Kuala Lumpur okay
Indian Wells okay-ish
Miami vs. #2 seed

Why can´t she land in the bracket of a Pironkova just once or draw a Vandeweghe in the first round. No it has to be Dokic and then Zvonareva, one of the worst possible draws.

She is in Pironkova´s bracket.:lol:

I almost wrote Rus in as a preferable first round scrub, but then I figured nobody liked Vandeweghe, but some delusional fans from the Netherlands would take offense with calling Rus crap. Creepy. Of course her luck runs out in round with top seed Azarenka.
