I donīt know. She made the Australian Open semifinal, but it felt more like a fluke than anything else. She gets torn a new a******* in the semifinal. Like Jankovic at the French Open. She wins a big title in Doha playing some really good tennis, but nevertheless you just feel like her game isnīt where it has been. Like Jankovic in Indian Wells.

Far too early to say yet. Let's see how she does in Miami.

It looks like she might be falling back a little now.
Her last 3 majors are F,F,SF, so lets wait until the next 2 majors come up.

But watching her play this year would you expect great things out of her at the other Slams this year, say at least live up to her seeding. The naked results this year would suggest it is possible, but watching her play I think she is below her level from last year and something is just a little off.

I have to agree she doesn't play the way I would like to see her play every match.
She showed she can play with alot of controlled agression in the Doha final.
but alot of matches she just plays like a brainless pusher. ;(

If she loses to Safina, which I think she will, then you can say this

Hey! Irony or not? Assuming the latter, you were banned because of that? I told something like "Serena will not win something" and got 3 months ban and reminder that very next slip of mine will be permanent ban.:( If you're not making fun of me than we should make friends.

Maybe. I did expect more from her against Kim in the Australian Open semi final and she did have disappointing results in Sydney, Dubai and Indian Wells but she didn't have a great start last year either. Realistically we may have to wait until after the clay season to make any comparisons with Jelena. Traditionally Vera has not had great results on clay so things may be about to get worse for her.

Dunno. Her game obviously isn't where it was last year, but maybe it's just a little crisis she'll overcome?

If I were her, my form would be dipping too - Sergey would just be too much of a distraction.

This is only what, her 5th or 6th tournament? She made the semi final in Melbourne and won the title in Doha. She had a bad week at IW. Let's see how she does in Miami.

No, just no. 2011 Zvonareva is levels above 2010 Jankovic.

Only if we don't count Jelena's 2010 clay season. :oh:

She has played well only intermittently this season. Thing is, Zvonareva at 70% would still probably be the #1 favourite to win this year's English Open.

People are forgetting Vera was side-lined after Charleston with some sort of injury (I don't specifically remember) so she has a lengthy clay court season to collect some large chunks of points, which will probably help her maintain her ranking within at least the Top 5, assuming she has consistent results.

Yes, but any reason for a bit of a banning for you must be good:) such as rubbishing Bepa and praising a player she is competitive with! and also for having unauthorised pics of Bepa in your sig(must be a secret admiration)

Zvonareva is overall a better player than Jankovic. Better athlete, faster, better serve and ground game.

Vera had a surgery in November 2009. Surgeon told her she will be able to play from Wimblendon 2010. All this time she played wearing protective boot. All the result from start of 2010 to the Wimblendon cannot be indicative bacause she was not able to play at her best. Clay season was tanked because of the highest risk to reinjure heself due to the style of movement on clay. Similar the results from the end of 2009 are not indicative because she played while injured. This include her match against Bartoli and YEC match against Caro.

What are you talking about? Zvonareva a better athlete and faster than Jankovic? Did you not watch a single Jankovic match from 06-08?

And I hate Jankovic's guts, but at least she was a worthy void era player, who has had a couple of big slam wins. Zvonareva is nothing but a mug era player who's about as big of an impostor as Failniacki.

I realise you're saying that just because you're a JJ hater, but nevermind, I'll still answer.
When they both played at their best level in late 2008, Jelena won all 3 of their matches, albeit with a lot of difficulties - Vera was always the first one to blink.
OTOH, Vera's top form has lasted longer than Jelena's.
And yes, Jelena has much more big wins than Vera, (let's not even mention non-MM titles :sobbing:).
But to be honest, I think Vera could have done SO much more if she weren't... well, Vera.

Well, I thought Vera played really well to get to her AO SF actually... she was very good against Kvitova, Benesova and Safarova.

But i agree definitely a level below late 2010 levels...

If there's champions by default, there's also favourites by default.

Well, I can think of at least two others who will be larger favourites if Vera's at her very best. And if she's only at 70% of her game, I can think maybe 5-6 others.

I actually gave this some more thought yesterday after defending JJ, and I concluded that you are right - Vera is a better player. Her BH and defence are on par with Jelena's best, but she also has a FH and a good serve. However, her mind, no amtter how much she has mentally improved will alway stand it her way. jelena's adavantage was her self-confidence, but it's long gone now, together with her game. I don't expect Jelena to beat Vera ever again, to be honest. As foe Vera and Gs - I think Corswandt's got a point - she could use this chaos at teh following couple of slams, and if she's lucky enough with the draw (meaning: someone takes out Clijsters, and she doesn't run into some random player in a crazy form a la Stosur last year), she could snatch one.
