View Full Version : Tournament PREDICTIONS and POSSIBILITIES

The seeds (I'll update this when I see the draw):

01. Serena Williams: The obvious favorite. Nobody here gives her particular trouble.

02. Venus Williams: An early upset in the making? She will be rusty for sure, and it's not like she can "play her way" into the tournament before facing a top player....everyone here (except for one) is a TOP player.

03. Jennifer Capriati: Round one or quarterfinal loss 99% assured.

04. Justine Henin: Has been looking better recently. Should manage round one, possibly through to semis, or if draw opens up, finals.

05. Kim Clijsters: Have to like her chances. She has to be favored against the top four unless she meets Serena, who she gave a first-set drubbing to in their last encounter. Recently play is encouraging.

06. Monica Seles: Early round upset. Rusty, and let's face it, she's getting up there.

07. Daniela Hantuchova: Could make waves considering recent play. Still hasn't shown she can beat a Williams sister.

08. Jelena Dokic: First round loss.

09. Lindsay Davenport: Is she still playing? If not injured, expect her to win her first round if she meets Seles, Dani, or Jelena (and the probability of her playing Jelena first is highest).

10. Anastasia Myskina: The lurking dark horse. She has beaten all of the #5-8 seeds sometime this year except Seles, who she could beat now anyway.

11. Patty Schnyder: Not a fun match-up, considering that she too is playing better than the #6-8 seeds. Upset specialist.

12. Chanda Rubin: Inconsistent, but if she makes it past round one, has shown the ability to beat the elite. If she wins the first one, she gets far.

13. Silvia Farina Elia: Useless. Useless, crappy player, who had a few nice wins years ago to get a decent ranking, and has racked up something like 30 Tier III quarterfinals a year to manage the ranking. The top four seeds are all praying to meet her first round and not the next three.

14. Maggie Maleeva: This is on carpet, right? Watch out...

15. Anna Smashnova: Whether she wins basically depends on the play of her opponent, so if any of the top four are rusty in their first round, she is not the ideal opponent for them. I'd give her a 25% chance at an early upset.

16. Elena Dementieva: Who knows? Has the speed and power to handle the top four, but 'consistence' is a foreign word to her.

First round match-ups:

1-4 vs. 13-16

No one wants to meet Maleeva. All are hoping to meet Farina Elia. If rusty, the top four would want to play Dementieva as opposed to Smashnova.

5-8 vs. 9-12

Clijsters the only sure bet. Davenport, Rubin, Myskina, Schnyder could upset any of them, and Dokic and Seles are almost sure 1st round losers.

Early losers (top 8): Venus, Capriati, Dokic, Seles.

Favorites: Serena, Clijsters, Henin

Winner: Serena over a Belgian

Your biased against Monica is amazing.

The top 8, less whoever plays Lindsay in R1 will move on.
Although the difference between Top 10 and Top 20 is smaller than years past, some of the ones outside the Top 20 will be outclassed.

Biased against Monica? No. When was the last tournament she played? What have some of her recent results been? Not good, not good at all. Let's face it: Would you favor her in a match against Myskina, Schnyder, Rubin, or Davenport if they were to play right now? Probably not. What I have against Monica and Silvia is that Monica is not playing good enough to beat these girls, and that Silvia has never played good enough to beat these girls.

Anyway, I have been informed that the last eight are unseeded, so the top seed could theoretically meet Lindsay Davenport, which changes a LOT of what I said.

Regardless, there is little doubt that the top eight would choose to meet Farina Elia could they have a choice, and the last eight would choose to meet Seles/Dokic first round if they had a choice.

It is your opinion, but if Venus loses to someone is Serena in finals.

Monica would wipe the floor with all but Davenport

She's had 3 weeks to prepare, she'll be ready

Silvia Farina Elia isnt so 'useless' or she would'nt have gotten to 11 in the world.

It seems to me every time i turn around people are always saying that Monica's gonna lose first round, the new girls will beat her blah blah blah, but it never happens.

If she plays Miskina 6-3 6-2 if she plays Schnyder 6-2 6-1 if she plays Chanda 6-3 6-2 if she plays Elia 6-1 6-1

Monica will get to the SF provided she stays away from the WIlliams' and Davy nuff said

oh and by the way, both Monica and Elia are eons better than you could ever could dream to be so just be quiet

o0O0o, venus played her first round match against maleeva in moscow, she hadnt played since the us open, but still she was good enough to take her to 3 sets including a tiebreak in the third set...may i remind you that maleeva won that tournament beating 2 other top ten players who are good on indoor surfaces with similar scorelines and kim and davenport had more preparation than venus did...

Maleeva beat Amelie and Lindsay, not Kim and Lindsay

I agree with most of it o0O0o, except for monica...she can do some damage...and Venus won't be upset I'm afraid

Don't be so sure of Jelena... just because she plays "boring tennis" doesn't mean she'll lose just so she won't take up airtime. So long as she doesn't draw Davenport, she has a very decent chance of winning.

I agree with your whole synopsis, OooooOO. :o Did I leave out an "O"?  Anyhoo, Monica is not known to return from long layoffs strong so I'm not looking for her to make any ways. Jen is..... Well, you know.  Venus is questionable due to lack of play and dismal last performance. Lindsay hasn't shown that she can finish a tourney holding the trophy since her return. I think your predictions are right on the money.:hearts:

Good point, Oliver. I never thought of that and that counts for a lot. Let's hope Venus is home practicing her heart out so she can end the year strongly.:)

Umm, does anyone remember in 95 when she won the first tourny she entered without dropping a set and got to the final of the UsOPen? And last year when she beat Hingis, Capriati, and Serena after a 5 month layoff? Get your facts straight.

Oh and oOoOO or whatever, you would get clocked by any of the top 5 and you know it. You might be able to out hit them, but talent wise, your waaaaaaaay behind

I just love how you count out Venus. When she makes it to the final and possibly wins the trophy then folks will look pretty stupid. BTW I like Maggie, but if she meets Kim Clijsters in the first round, expect an azz waxing from Kim.

I too think a lot of people downplay Jelena's talent just cause she's been in a slump or don't like her.

If jelena draws Lindsay first round, then Jelena has no chance ;) lol...but against anyone else, i think jelena atleast has a 50% chance to win.

I would love for her to do well here and to suprise everyone who doubts her! I think, depending on her opponents, Jelena could do well...she will have had 1.5 weeks off, so shouldn't be that tired...

GO JELENA!

Also, Patty and Chanda!

I didn't think that 1-4 would automatically meet 13-16 and 5-8 against 9-12 1st round? Is that correct? Could someone please verify? I thought it was just 1-8 vs 9-16 randomly? The other way makes more sense though!

vs1
Oct 29th, 2002, 08:19 AM
I think it's just 1-8 vs. 9-16 to start.
I think that Venus will do well. Just because she lost to Maleeva in a third set tiebreak doesn't mean now that Venus can't win and Maleeva is too strong. Maggie went down pretty quickly the week after Moscow!
I still think, however, that Serena will win this championship...beating either Venus or Kim in the finals. That's my prediction.

good o0O0Oo (whatever your annoying name is) i really admire your modesty. i am sure if you were put in front of a packed staples centre you would just breeze through the tournament and also take the no.1 ranking in womens tennis. monica did not play hardly any of the indoor season last year and then came back and came pretty close to winning the AO (and i was there to see that). i am not saying she will win the tournie, but you are far too dismissive of her chances of winning matches. i am pretty sure that patty for example would rather face dokic, hantuchova, or clijsters as they are all players she has beaten. patty has never beaten monica, and although she has been missing lately, that just makes her unknown, which i think would be more intimidating. monica's bad form at US Open (where she still made the Q/F) and Brasil (S/F) where all injury related, as demonstrated by her long lay off. so don't be so quick to judge, when u really don't know what form monica is in, and what other players are thinking.

oh and mmcdonald, u read way to much into past scores, but if you like old scores you should remember that schnyder in 98 took monica to 7-6 in the third and rubin has taken her to three on numerous occassion - and both those players are at their peaks at the momment.

you are both such typical americans!

This looks like Fun I'll make comments to your comments if you dont mind, here we go!
ooooo said:
01. Serena Williams: The obvious favorite. Nobody here gives her particular trouble.
phoenix says: So true! Though I would say if youre beat by a player then they give you trouble. Both Chanda and Justine have beaten Serena this year. She maybe rusty unless she's been practicing.

Oooo said:
02. Venus Williams: An early upset in the making? She will be rusty for sure, and it's not like she can "play her way" into the tournament before facing a top player....everyone here (except for one) is a TOP player.
phoenix says: Maybe. I think if she even shows up she will be motivated. The moscow loss probably woke her up. She wants to put lil sis in her place as well.

Ooooo said:
03. Jennifer Capriati: Round one or quarterfinal loss 99% assured.
phoenix says: Poor jen has been looking dismal. Look for her to make noise next year cause this season is over for her.

Ooooo says:
04. Justine Henin: Has been looking better recently. Should manage round one, possibly through to semis, or if draw opens up, finals.
Phoenix says: yes juju looks better but c'mon she beat alexandara stevenson. I love you alex but youre not top ten material yet. I see a quarter or maybe a semi for juju.

Oooo says:
05. Kim Clijsters: Have to like her chances. She has to be favored against the top four unless she meets Serena, who she gave a first-set drubbing to in their last encounter. Recently play is encouraging.
Phoenix says: Kim rocks. Shes my honorary williams sister along with daniela lil vee hantuchova. Kim reminds me of serena. Im hoping for a kim serena semi.

Oooo says:
06. Monica Seles: Early round upset. Rusty, and let's face it, she's getting up there.
Phoenix says: I would give her a second round only because she hasnt played and shes been injured.

Ooooo says:
07. Daniela Hantuchova: Could make waves considering recent play. Still hasn't shown she can beat a Williams sister.
Phoenix says: Lil vee is a sound player not quite ready for the fearsome five:serena venus jen lindsay monica. I think a quarter final.

oooo says:
08. Jelena Dokic: First round loss.
Phoenix says: youre so bad! look for duckchick to make some noise after beating down her father and putting him in place shes ready to rock unless her boytoy has been keeping her busy.

Ooooo says:
09. Lindsay Davenport: Is she still playing? If not injured, expect her to win her first round if she meets Seles, Dani, or Jelena (and the probability of her playing Jelena first is highest).
phoenix says: Bye bye linds. first round loss.

Oooo says:
10. Anastasia Myskina: The lurking dark horse. She has beaten all of the #5-8 seeds sometime this year except Seles, who she could beat now anyway.
Phoenix says: Something about her I dont like. I think it was when she beat smartina the way she did. oh well she'll lose before the quarterfinals.

oooo says:
11. Patty Schnyder: Not a fun match-up, considering that she too is playing better than the #6-8 seeds. Upset specialist.
Phoenix: Go patty and your hair too! I love pattys wild amazon fresh out of the wild look. quaterfinal or semi!

Oooo says:
12. Chanda Rubin: Inconsistent, but if she makes it past round one, has shown the ability to beat the elite. If she wins the first one, she gets far.
Phoenix says: Chanda wants to WIN! but i think a quarter slim chance at a semi.

oooo says:
13. Silvia Farina Elia: Useless. Useless, crappy player, who had a few nice wins years ago to get a decent ranking, and has racked up something like 30 Tier III quarterfinals a year to manage the ranking. The top four seeds are all praying to meet her first round and not the next three.
Phoenix says: I agree completely someone get this chick out of the top twenty cause shes taking up space.

Oooooo says:
14. Maggie Maleeva: This is on carpet, right? Watch out...
Phoenix says: Please please dont draw venus first round please please maggie please! Get lindsay!

Oooo says:
15. Anna Smashnova: Whether she wins basically depends on the play of her opponent, so if any of the top four are rusty in their first round, she is not the ideal opponent for them. I'd give her a 25% chance at an early upset.
phoenix says: whatever. shes going down first round with slivia.

Oooo says:
16. Elena Dementieva: Who knows? Has the speed and power to handle the top four, but 'consistence' is a foreign word to her.
Phoenix says: WITHDRAW SO ALEXANDRA CAN PLAY SHE HAS A HIGHER RANKING THAN YOU!!!!!

.

Early losers (top 8): Capriati, Dokic, Seles

Favorites: Serena, Clijsters (these two make sense)

Winner: Venus finally takes one from Serena (i can hope cant i?)

My facts are straight. And why in sam hill are you talking about what Monica did in '95? And last year when Monica beat Serena, Hingis and Capriaiti, #1, she was not just coming back from being off for 5 months. She had been playing a couple of tournaments. And #2, she was in much better shape than she is right now. Maybe you should get your facts straight.:p BTW, I love Monica. What people are saying about Monica when she comes off a long time off, she normally has the hunger to fight and win.... no question about it, i have see it so many times, 2002 in Ao, 2001 in sandiego\LA, 2000 in Amelia Island... actually going on to win the title after being injured of all most of the beginning of the year... and then ofcourse in 95, even more remarkable.

You cant just right Monica off like that, especially if she's definately coming back healthy.

Time will tell.

I just think that she had the best opportunity to win a slam at the Aussie this year and blew it. Should have beaten Hingis and Cappy was not playing that well(should have lost that final) Hingis was the only player Cappy would have beaten on that hot day in Austrailia.

Tornament winner probabilities??????
Heres mine

1. Serena Williams, shes number 1 and have all the confidence to get it.
2. Lindsay Davenport, she's still rules indoors and only problems are williams who hasnt defeated her indoors.
3. Kim, She is in control. If she wants it really bad she can get it.

Darkhorses:
1. Maleeva- She proves to be a great indoor player
2. Monica- She can rise anytime and bring back old ways of winning thoug i wont bank my money on her yet.

Could pass or lose first round but will eventually rest earlier.
1. Venus, does'nt have any good record on carpet lately or shall I say ever.
2. Jennifer- She is in losing streak

As for others, they could be party spoilers.

Personally I can't see past Serena, but I htink Kim, Venus and Lindsay are all in with chances. Everyone in this tournie has an opportunity to cause an upset, but I expect Anna S, Patty and Maggie to be the 1st round upsetters and Lindsay and Kim to be in the final if the draw allows that.
