View Full Version : I Heart the Sony Ericsson Open

OK, so I'm no longer "I Heart So-and-so"....

But I am back from Tuesday at the 2011 SEO. Lots of pics and vids. Saw just about every one of the tennis "centerfolds" today, and got some pics and vids to cover most everybody. About the only one I didn't see that I wanted to was my fave.

Among the matches I saw were Zheng-Cirstea, Oudin-Goerges, Mirza-Voracova and and Lisicki-Czink. The rest of the day I spent wandering the practice courts, and found Pova, Kirilinko, Ivanovic, Azarinka, Radwanska, Cirstea, Zheng, Kvitova, Vesnina, Saferova, Dulko, Safina, Baczinski, Peer, Errani, Jankovic,....

Uploading pics now. Vids will have to wait till I get home due to a slow connection at the hotel. This is my favorite from today:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/IHeartMasha/2011SEOMarch22069a.jpg

Regarding the matches:

Zheng/Cirstea: Couldn't really take sides as I like both, UNTIL Sori threw her racquet in the second set from the baseline all the way up to the umpire's chair and nearly hit the ballboy, drawing a code warning and a lecture from the ump. It was deserved. She could have hurt somebody. Not a smart move. She also made some dumb moves with challenges. Don't think she got one all day, and blew through all of them early in each set. The good news for her was that after some early errors she settled down and her serve and forehand were working well, but just not well enough to cope with Jie's tenacious defense. Both girls hit some stinging returns, deep and hard, which created a shitload of breaks in set 2. By the time set 2 started, my buddy from last year showed up--the guy who led all the Zheng Jie cheers, and sure enough, on cue, he started up "Zheng JIE (clap clap clap) Zheng JIE (clap clap clap)"... lol. It was pretty meek, today, in the cavernous grandstand. He was leading it from one end and me and a couple other people were clapping from the other end, lol.

Goerges/Oudin: Bleahhhhh.......Julia must have made 500 errors. Her game regressed from the start of the year. She looked great, but her game stunk, pure and simple. Serve was a struggle, forehand was off the mark. Nothing good to take away from this. Oudin didn't have to do much except yell "cmon!" when Julia missed. The sucky part was that I didn't get to use my great line I was waiting to shout out if Julia would have taken set 2. I was going to shout "Cmon, GORGEOUS!" for all those damn Oudin fans when Julia came out for set 3......

Mirza/Voracova was pretty one-sided. Mirza's game was huge by comparison. Never in trouble. She is sooooooo damn sexy. She has an incredible body. You have to see her up close to appreciate her. Wowzer.

That's all for tonight. Was up at 2AM this morning for the long drive down, got here by 9:15, and am pretty beat. Early day tomorrow!

Yes, I got some vice vids of Jie from both practice and the match with Sorana. Will upload when I get back home next week, as the internet here at the hotel is barely better than dial-up. In the meantime, there's some pics in my Flickr photostream.

 Good catch. Apropos that it's Miami, too....

Yes, I wanted to try to give everyone a little taste of their favorites if I could reasonably do it. It's hard taking requests, but if I snap photos where I come across players it isn't as much of a burden, and the funny thing is, people here are asking ME "who is that?" around all the practice courts now, lol.....I can't tell an ATP player from a beach bum, but I know most of the WTA players cold now.....

Perhaps while Crockett n'Tubbs are in the vicinity they can bust #1 "pusher" Caro.. (No offence intended to the dynamic Dane or her many fans).

Well, today, Wednesday March 23, I didn't really see any matches except for Sania Mirza against Aranxta Parra Santonja and a few games of Hampton-Tomljanovic. I spent the day making round after round of the practice courts, and probably walked fifteen miles, at least. It was a lot.

Saw Caro, Clijsters, Pennetta and Kvitova, Azarenka, Jankovic, Sharapova, Li and Kuznetsova, Zheng, Mirza, Wickmayer, Agi Radwanska, Cibulkova, Schiavone, Pironkova, Vesnina, Razzano and Cornet, among many others. About bumped shoulders with Alize. Have to admit, for a blonde, she's a really attractive girl.

Funny thing--I was at court 10 at about 10 or so when Caroline and her Dad and hitting partner showed up. No one else was there. I snapped off a pic or two and a vid and left and came back maybe 10 minutes later and there must have been 200 people there! How word gets around at these places I never know!

Today's pic:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/IHeartMasha/2011SEOMarch23120a.jpg

Pretty low key day for me, apart from Sania's match, which was moved from Court three due to a backlog of matches on that court, and relocated to practice court 10, which has no bleachers or seats. Fortunately, I got a good spot up next to the fence for pictures and vids, and cheering! Sania is looking quite confident in this tournament, aggressive on serve and returning huge, getting herself ahead in sets generally and playing from the lead. She looks like a different player.

Kirilenko, her R2 opponent, showed up in the last game of the first set to scout, standing a few feet from me, and posing for a photo with a little girl.

I decided not to stay for the night session match, Safina v. Dokic. There were also some day session matches still going on at 7 when I left the grounds. Long day ahead tomorrow by the looks of it! Photos from today are uploading to my Flickr now.

 Sorry I missed last night. I'm beat. Really tired. It's hot here this year and the long days and hot weather are tough, lol.

Picking stories to share is also tough. The best ones are sometimes the most personal, and some of those I'd better not share, unfortunately.

Backing up a bit, Thursday's pics are uploading now. I shot more video this year than photos. Next week I'll start getting that up.

I got an up close shot of Clijsters on the fly as soon as I got to Crandon Park on Thursday the 24th, as she was warming up for practice. Then I was off to fill a request for Klara Zakapolova pics as she was playing Baltacha over on court 6. Got photos of both of them, but only stayed for one changeover.

Next I went to see Sveta dismantle Simona Halep. Complete demolition. Whatever was in Sveta's water in Indian Wells has passed. She looked great. Her game was just far more mature and polished than that of Halep, who seemed to have no plan B for her multitude of forehands into the net.

Got a few pics of Schnyder and Saferova over on court 3 before it got too hot, and then went to watch JJ take apart Niculescu. LOL at JJ for showing up about 15 minutes late. Diva! She looked pretty sharp, though. Good start for her.

Later in the afternoon I found Sania Mirza practicing in a solid black outfit. Christ! Somebody check her for fever! It was hot out there!

I was wearing my shirt that said "Allez Aravane!" on it, and all day people kept asking me about Rezai. In the afternoon, a giant tennis ball head came running up to me yelling "Allez! Allez! Allez!" That made me laugh out loud. He was trying to get some kids to say it, too!

One of those who noticed my shirt was Lucie Saferova. I passed by her in the afternoon and she gave me the stare down. :D

Just before Rezai's match, a reporter from Tennis Prose asked me about my shirt. I recognized him from the day before, as I'd seen him interviewing Aravane then. He asked if I'd bought the shirt or made it, and I told him it was custom, and he said, "it's pretty unusual for anyone here to be pulling for her, since she's French. What makes you like her?"

LOL. So I unloaded on the poor guy. Recited all of my reasons--the never say die, "go for it" attitude, courage, mental strength, determination, fight, power....I recited all her stats for him, all the wins, reminded him how she pushed around Serena, Venus, Dinara, Maria, Woz, et al with ease, talked of the potential greatness. And then I grinned and added, "and she's hot as HELL!" :o We chuckled about that one, and when he gave me the info for his website interview of Aravane I invited him to take a look at the birthday video we made for her.

Friday March 25

Started out with photos and a special Tennisforum video of Jelena Jankovic "practicing", lol. You'll just have to wait and see it to appreciate it. Well, her fans will. Maybe even some of the haters will get a laugh out of it.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/IHeartMasha/2011SEOMarch25002a.jpg

Went to see a set of Groth and Shvedova on court 8. Pretty sloppy stuff.

After that I went to court 1 to see the entire Mirza-Kirilenko match. I say it that way rather than vice versa because in reality, Sania was the better player, but she ran out of gas. That's what happens when you play 4 matches in three days. Kirilenko's opponent was "bye". Same thing happened to Paszek here two years ago when she had Sveta on the ropes in R2 6-1 3-1 after 2 quallies. Just ran out of gas. Sania lost the control on her shots from fatigue and it was pretty much over from that point. But if it had been a set and half match, Mirza would definitely have been through to play Radwanska. Still, a good tournament for her.

Watched a set and a half of Bartoli-Morita and shot some video and got pics, and this was very sloppy tennis. Ayumi hit a few winners, but Marion was either off her game or she has been seriously lucky this year, one or the other. Maybe she just doesn't like the heat.

Went to see some of Zvonareva-Safina in the stadium. Safina was rolling during the time I was there, in the first set, and Vera looked bad. Thought she was a goner, and left as it was quite hot up there. After having a bite to eat I went to see some of Azarenka-Hradecka, and was amazed to find that during warm-ups Vika did not utter a single solitary shriek, then on her first point, "aaahhhhhhhhh!!!!" I have the documentary evidence to prove it, too. You'll get a kick out of my commentary on this one, lol.

That was pretty much it. I didn't stick around for the night matches, as I was about ready to fall asleep. Pics are now up.

Pics are at my at http://www.flickr.com/photos/28300821@N05/

They are divided by days into picture sets which you can see on the right.

The video takes awhile to process and upload and I will have to start doing that when I get home Monday. I have probably 3-3.5 hours of video this year.

Quick notes about Saturday--

Man, was it crowded. This had to be the worst I've ever seen it, but they are selling grounds passes this year for those who don't have stadium seats.

What this means is that the matches I like to get into--the ones on the outer courts--are now really packed, and in a lot of cases, impossible to get into. I had the best of intentions to get into to see Gorges-Raymond in doubles against Kirilenko-Pavlyuchenkova yesterday morning, but there was NO WAY, people were waiting ten deep just to get in there. So I watched Vera Zvonareva practice with my Mom. That's her favorite player. And now comes the part about the Caro shirt...

With all due apologies the Caro haters on the board, my mother is one of the biggest on the planet. For some unfathomable and unexplainable reason she cannot identify, she has taken a real hatred toward this girl. Me, I am just ambivalent, but no, with her, it's pure hate. At Christmas, Mom got me a Skagen watch, and she even told the salesman how much she hated buying it because it came from the same country as Caroline Wozniacki!

Anyway, for her birthday, I bought her a bright yellow t-shirt that says "GO GO CARO!" on it, especially for the trip to Miami. I told her she had to wear it at least once, lol. What I DIDN'T tell her was what I had planned. Of course, I wanted to find Woz and have them pose together, Caro and her "#1 fan", sort of the ultimate humiliation, lol, but could never pull that off. So instead, I took this shot of her standing in front of Vera practicing:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/IHeartMasha/2011SEOMarch26011a.jpg

Anyway, as for the tennis, I got to see the doubles with Sveta/Vera against AMG/MJMS, and Mirza/Vesnina vs Zheng/Chan, plus some of Jankovic v Zakopolova and a few games of Pova-Lisicki, which was apparently done before it started. Also caught a little of Petkovic against Benesova, and a few practices, icluding Jie's, Cibulkova's, Jankovic's and Pennetta/Dulko. Jelena went straight from her match to the practice court, still in her dress, obviously unhappy about her game, petulant, and her coach was insisting that she "do it at least six times before going on to something else", apparently meaning she wasn't being patient enough with her shot selection.

AMG/MJMS looked good in their win--lots of Latin support there, as you might expect in Miami.

Last day today!
