Despite not winning a title on clay this season, I feel Myskina is peaking just in time for the big one, she had a shocking loss in the final in S5 and will be eager to make up for it this season. Hercog has been a revelation to the tour in the past few weeks, she was highly impressive in winning Rome, but was it beginner's luck or is she genuinely this season's Queen of Clay? Finally we have Tammy, the veteran has overcome a slump to become an elite force once again, she has had some great results with just 2 aces, and there's no reason why she can't reproduce that form here this week.

Solid Bets

Cibulkova has had some notable wins so far on clay, but has fallen a short in the latter stages of tournaments, some slight tweaks and she can go all the way. As for Bepa, she is here on name and ace count alone, sadly her form has not been impressive thus far, but she has shown her pedigree and has the ability to become a champion. Lastly we have Henin, I feel Justine, like Spears on plexi, has had some bad draws and has not been able to show her true quality, this could be her breakthrough week.

Injured Venus Arrives in Paris
Williams has "no expectations" for second major
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/505/11010.jpg
Venus Williams stretches on a practice court at Roland Garros. Her left ankle is still heavily strapped.
*
PARIS -- Venus Williams was last seen on a tennis court in the finals of Rome. She lost easily, but she couldn't even move because in the semi finals she had tore her ankle while chasing a shot. She missed last week's event due to the injury.
*
Venus has arrived to play at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the season. "It's a Grand Slam, you always try your hardest," Venus said after a practice session earlier today. "My doctor advised me not to play, but at the end of the day you never know what will happen once you're on the court. I want to know that I did my best, whether I can walk, run or breathe on the court or not. If it was up to my doctor, mother, father or sister I wouldn't be here."
*
Venus is scheduled to play #2 Maria Kirilenko in the first round. "I have no expectations. With my ankle, I'm just trying to survive."
*
First round is expected to start on Tuesday.

SERENA AWAITS PLAY AT ROLAND GARROS

http://www.womenstennisblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/serena-and-richard-rg-prep.jpg

American Serena Williams is playing her first event on the ATC tour. The event happens to be second slam of the year Roland Garros. Serena has to go through qualifying. Serena plays B. Polona Hercog.

We caught up with Serena after a hitting session with her father Ricahrd.

Q: Hey Serena, its your first event. How are you feeling?
Serena: "You know, I feel good. I am moving well, and hitting well."

Q: Do you have expectations on how you'll do here?
Serena: "I am not at my best on clay. So my expectations are low. I would love to make the maid draw, but I will take it one match at a time."

Q: How is Venus with the injury?
Serena: "You know, she was told not to play until the US Open. She actually convinced me to play here. I was going to skip it, and start on grass."

Q: Are you and Venus going to play doubles?
Serena: "Nothing has been discussed."

Q: All the best Serena.
Serena: "Thank-you."

American Serena Williams stunned the ATC tour earlier today with a surprising straight set win over Polona Hercog. Despite it being Serena's first match she didn't seem fazed by the occasion or let the pressure and situation get to her. With the win, Serena moved into the main draw to face number one seed Anastasia Myskina.

In the opening set, Serena and Hercog stayed on serve until 3-all when Serena went down the break 3-4. Serena rebounded quickly and got off to love-40. Serena let all three break points slip away, and lost the game. Serving down 3-5, Serena seemed to step up, and into the court, and start taking control of the rallies. She would eventually get the set into a tiebreak. The fighting continued from both. In the end Serena would nail a second serve return cross court for the winner, and take the set 7/6 (8-6).

The battle continued into the second set. Serena got up the early break to lead 4-3. Hercog would break back, and level the match at 5-all. Once again Serena started to control the long rallies, by stepping in and taking the ball early, and using different shots and not just trying to out hit her.

S. Williams def. Hercog 7-6(6) 7-5

Moderator: Questions for Ms. Serena Williams.

Q: Serena, you battled hard out there. How are you feeling?
Serena: "I feel fantastic. I lifted my game when I had to. I played well on most of the big points. It was a little more of a struggle then I anticipated but I never really doubted myself, or my game."

Q: Down 3-5 in the first set, did you think that you were going to lose the set?
Serena: "It did cross my mind. When I got down, I just took a few deep breaths and told myself to take control. I was trying to over-power her, and hit through her. I needed to take the ball early, and hit around her. That is exactly what I did."

Q: You crushed many second serves, including one to win the opening set.
Serena: "I am the type of player that loves to be aggressive. Weak second serves, let me have the advantage right away in a point. I love smashing returns. First serves returns, or second serves."

Q: The tacit seems to work. When you did get a second serve you were nailing returns, and got Hercog to double fault 8 times.
Serena: "Again, I like to take control. I want to be aggressive as often as possible. Stepping in for a second serve, lets them know that I am going to put the ball away quick and easy."

Q: You seemed to lay off the gas for a few games in the second set. It became very noticeable after you got up the break.
Serena: "I don't think I did. I guess after I watch my match I let you know. From my point, I think I continued playing how I did from point 1 to the final point."

Q: You stunned much of the tour with this win.
Serena: "I don't think I did. I think people thought that with clay being my worst surface I wouldn't put up a fight. I am here to fight and make my way into main draws."

Q: Did Venus give you any pointers on how to beat Hercog?
Serena: "No. Venus told me that she only lost the Rome final because she was injuried."

Q: You face number one seed Myskina next round. What are your thoughts on her?
Serena: "She's obviously a great player. You don't get the number one seed by not being a good player. Obviously I haven't played her. I just need to stay focused on my game, and hope that I can rally and keep it close."

Q: Do you think you can win?
Serena: "Anything is possible."

Q: Best of luck.
Serena: "Thanks!"

Wounded Williams Wins
Venus upsets #2 Kirilenko in opening round
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/505/vee21.jpg
Venus hits a shot to Maria Kirilenko in the first round of the French Open. Williams won 36 61 75
*
PARIS - Venus Williams arrived in Paris with a tear in her ankle. On Wednesday, she upset #2 seeded Maria Kirilenko to advance to the quarter finals. Not bad for a woman with a bad ankle.
*
In the first set, Williams started slow. She wasn't aggressive and her movement was questionable. After dropping the first 4 games of the match, she did recover to get one break back, but Kirilenko helod on for a 6-3 set victory.
*
"I was nervous. I didn't know how my ankle would hold up," Venus said afterwards about the first set loss. "Maria played so well, as expected as the #2 player in the world."
*
The second set was the complete opposite. Venus dominated on every shot, going for winners early in every rally. The result? a 6-1 set to Williams.
*
"I just told myself to go for it. No holding back. I wanted to really win the match, or at least make it closer."
*
The third set was a battle, and Williams' ankle seemed to cave, letting Kirilenko go up 5-3. Williams rallied to win the last 4 games in a row to complete the upset 36 61 75.
*
"Down 3-5, I just kept saying 'it's not over', and it wasn't. Again, Maria was playing so well, I really had to fight. I'm just lucky that things went my way."
*
Asked about her ankle and how it was holding up, Williams gave a sly smile "I have to ice it later. I'm not going to make excuses. My doctor told me not to play, but here I am in the quarter finals."
*
In the quarter finals, Williams will battle #7 Vera Zvonareva."I'm excited to play Vera again. We haven't played since Auckland, which I won in a tight battle. It should be a good match."
*
Venus' sister Serena lost her opening round match to #1 Anastasia Myskina earlier today as well. "I'm happy that Serena won her qualifying match, but Myskina is so good on clay and she's #1 in the world. Serena has so much time to prove herself on tour. She'll win many titles, you'll see," Venus said.
*
Venus is expected to play her quarter final tomorrow.

SLUGGISH SERENA STUMBLES

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/506/503_6110.jpg
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/506/503_6122.jpg
Top: Serena yawns on court; Serena prepares to return a serve

American Serena Williams lost in the opening round at Roland Garros. Serena won a qualifying round, to get into the main draw where she faced number one seed Anastasia Myskina.

In the first set, Serena got down the early break 1/3. Myskina continued to use her spins to frustrate Serena. Myskina would easily take the set 6/3.

"Anastasia was played great. Clay is one of her best courts, and clearly my worst. I wasn't prepared for her to use so many different spins and for them to be so successful."

In the second set, Serena seemed calmer and more paitient to wait for her chances. Myskina would again get up the break 3/2. After going down a break, Serena seemed to lose interest, and seemed to be disinterested in fighting to keep herself alive in the match.

Myskina(1) def. Serena: 6-3 6-4

"I think I lifted my game, and then she just raised hers. I felt I was constantly having an up-hill battle. I tried my best out there, and thats all I can do. I think the result would be very different on grass or a hard court."

When asked if she lost interest in the match Serena made the following statement
"You know, I was a little tired. I didn't get a day off between qualifying, and first round. I was also first up. The schedule worked for Anastasia. No excuses I tried my best for every point, and was hanging in their until the end."

Serena's older sister Venus escaped a first set scare to advance to the quarter-finals by defeating Maria Kirilenko 3/6 6/1 7/5.

"I am so happy that she won. I hope her ankle holds up. She's not supposed to be playing. I will be rooting for her from our home in Miami!"
