Just read on an italian newspaper that it is officially that this year Madrid will be played on a blue dirt! Is that really official? Or did I get it wrong?
Thanks

You'd figure they wouldn't do it after Rafa and Fed said they didn't like the blue clay, but Spain once again doing whatever it wants.

Madrid (at this level and venue) has only been around since 2009, and they came up with this idea last year.

Wrong, they came up with this idea at the first tourney back in 2009 - they had one indoor practice court in blue to test. It wasn't open for the general public to view, but everyone else was checking it out...all the players were going to look at it and some were given the chance to practice on it (one being Nadal) I was there as a member of the Media so I got a look at it...it's a very strong pretty blue/lilac colour...but also looks very artificial

I think this is cool :yeah:.

I wouldn't be surprised if other tournaments follow suit. We have seen hard courts go from green to all colors, imagine if we see this with clay too :p.

There are practical advantages to blue clay actually. It will be a lot easier to see the yellow tennis balls on the blue clay surface than it is on normal orange clay I suspect. If the bounce is the same I see no reason not to try out a different colour. Quite a fun playful idea and if us spectators can see the ball better then even more reason to do it. And as Elisse as said, they do seem to have picked a particularly attractive shade of blue as well. Blue has never been my favourite colour by a long shot but that shade really does look lovely.

It seems like it's harder to see lines on blue clay.

As far as I heard on media blue clay would be just for training, though I'm not sure if Tiriac has convinced players :o
Apparently yes, blue is Mutua's official colour and that would be the main reason for the change

They haven't used the blue for match court, but they do have a blue outside court for practise. I don't think the players like it much, very few seem to have practised on it :help:
