View Full Version : Why has Sorana Cirstea become so skinny ?

She looked maybe a little overweight 2 years ago but she was voluptuous and looked good, AND was winning (reaching the FO's quarters). What happened since then? Does she have an eating disorder or something ?

She wants to be perfect for Swimsuit photoshoots...seriously, I'm not rulling out eating disorder.

It seems all the adidas girls working in Vegas got really skinny.

Last year she was not that slim and wasn't better either, but you are right, it's a bit worrying...

As long as we're on dark topic: Also, a recently retired player was telling me that she's observed a rash of eating disorders among her colleagues. "If I see a player's results suddenly fall, the first thing I assume is that she either has an eating disorder or a complicated relationship with her coach." She says that if it weren't for eating disorders, the top 20 would look very different.

While I was reading this part, Sorana was the first one who struck me.

She must have worked really hard. She should definitely not lose more weight though. She adds some muscles and she is in great shape, at least physically.

I don't think she's scarily skinny or anything. She looks fit and if she carries less weight, it means she can move around better on court and last longer in matches.

I think many female players can do with better fitness conditioning. Tell me which male player in top 50 carries a gut?

Sorana's slump is perplexing - probably mental and due to confidence issues and coach changes.

yeah I think she's a bit too skinny now, at least her arms..but Ivanovic also got a lot slimmer to get more speed and maybe it's what Cirstea is looking for too. Her results haven't been that horrible though, she's won couple of matches. She needs to gain some more muscle mass though, and NOT get any skinnier. On her off courts pictures there she looks pale and frele that is a bit sad. cuz she was gorgeous before.

Nalbaldian :p well used to anyway lol Bagdatis was/is not as fit as he should be I think.

What's the point of it all as she was way more successful on the court in 2009 ?

Why is it that if a woman decides to lose/gain some kilos she inmediately has a eating disorder?

Wow, I thought that was Hantuchova (who's is naturally skinny)in those small pics to the right where Sorana is wearing pink adidas--she has lost s good 10+ lbs.!

Well, if I see that picture and remember how she used to look, then yes, I think that she's lost a lot of weight, but if I just saw that pic and didn't recognise her, then she doesn't look unusually lean for a professional sportswoman. She still has boobs and muscles and her collarbones aren't sticking out or anything.

Maybe she thought she'd put less pressure on her joints etc at a lower weight - it's not necessarily an eating disorder.

So the top picture has been removed--didn't know we couldn't post Getty Images--I guess copyright infringements?

Yes Nalbaldian periodically, but he's usually broad/muscular.

It's not like Sorana will suddenly get better at tennis if she goes back to her 2009 weight. Her success in 2009 wasn't because she was curvaceous.

She's just trying to improve her game like any other player. Obviously parts of her game have fallen apart since those days, and she's working on other things to try to compensate.

I don't think Cirstea is the kind of player who needed to lose weight. She's never going to be the best mover, and I'm sure she's lost a lot of power as she's getting skinnier... It's the opposite to what happened to Jankovic. Jelena got all buff in the beginning of 2009, but that slowed her down considerably and it was not a wise choice for someone who depends on her defense, just like it's not the smartest choice for Sorana to get skinny when she plays a power game.

For the record, I'm not saying she has an eating disorder necessarily. Just a bit worried because it happened in such a short time. But I can see why she did that, if her team thought movement was a key to improve her game. :wavey:

Indeed, she lost a low of weight, but looks really OK - not like skeletor or anorexic girl. Otherwise, it's her business how she fells on her own body :D If it brings positive things on court, it's even better ;)

Because many people are addicted to drama.

She looked too skinny to me in that AO pic, and better in the pic in the white dress in this thread.

If she tried to drop weight to improve her movement or was sick she that could be an explanation. She may have decided to gain some of it back, which I think is probably smart for her with her build.

If her weight keeps fluctuating by a lot I would be concerned because that can be an early indicator of a disorder IIRC.

Not every woman is built like Venus or TOB or Dani.

Since none of us are doctors or therapist and have access to her, there's no way any of us can say. But I do think that's a very serious risk of the WTA selling sex appeal to try and boost ratings. I personally find athletic women very attractive, but the fact is they do not conform to the same beauty standards as models and actresses and if they try, you are going to run into body image issues and eating disorders. Most athletes are just going to be bigger in their arms, their core and their legs.

Sorana may or may not have an issue, but I'm sure some of the women do.

I hope Sorana doesn't have a disorder, that would be awful, but she's been struggling for over a year now, so anything could be the root cause of that. She does look much healthier in the white sundress than she did at this year's Aussie Open, it's still a bit worrisome.

Don't worry guys, Caroline is on the case. A few more dinners and she will have her all fattened up.

guys what a drama? gosh she is totally ok and its all just because she has full time fitness trainer like from the off season or so I think which travels with her around tournaments. this is from 2010 august http://www.flickr.com/photos/tlaenpix/4881277728/
and she has a lot of power plus good muscles

but their tennis obviously doesn't agree with you.

which shows quite clearly that the notion "thinner = fitter = better mover" doesn't hold up for every player.

Ana´s improved results last year had a lot to do with her improved fitness.

This. Her arms are too skinny for a tennis player. The body is fine. She adds some Hantuchova guns and she is in perfect shape.
