Well....got to say that was quite a bit easier than I thought it would be. Lesia has a good future, no doubt. She has played very well so far this year and current resides at 50 in the race rankings which reflects the fact that she has come for qualifying to win main draw matches at both the AO and Acapulco.

But I don't suppose Lesia ever encountered anyone quite like Monica in the junior or on the ITF circuit and she was obviously ill equiped to handle Monica's unique game. That said, it appears to have been a pretty solid performance for Monica, who broke Lesia 7 out of her 9 services game. Except for a brief spell early in the 2nd Monica never appeared threatened.

Hopefully this result indicates that Monica is back on track after three rather lackluster losses to Barrois, Kucova and Krajicek, following her very positive AO performance. :)

Sorry, but Niculescu's game is hardly unique or anything special anymore. She used to be the dropshot queen & had a really strong serve, but now, what makes her special? The occasional forehand slice, which is out of having no forehand, rather than something tactical?

Hmmm...ok....

Did Monica used to have a really strong serve? I must have missed that. Anyways....

I would say all the skills Monica has ever had she still has. But in order win matches she has had to adapt her game and at times play more conventionally. That is ok with me. I would still say her game is unique and it still causes a lot of players trouble. And while your post might imply she is past it, fact is she is rapidly moving back towards her career high ranking and I'm pretty optimistic she will overtake it sometime in the next few months.

Back in late 07-08, she always had multiple aces in matches, again, not the most powerful serve, but nevertheless tricky.

And from what I saw in Australian Open, she better play better if she wants to keep rising.

You are right that Monica's serve was probably at it's best late 07/08 as she apparently spent quite a bit of time in the 2nd half of 2007 working to better her serve. Since then the quality of her serve has fluctuated and at times it has been dismal. But at other times over the last year it has been pretty good, almost as good as 2008, but it has never been a weapon. At best it hasn't been a liability.

You are right, there are still a lot of holes in Monica's game and still vast room for improvement. And yet, while still being inconsistent and at times playing quite poorly, Monica has also played well enough at times to take her ranking from outside the top 130 9 months ago to 65 which it is now. And with few points to defend up till Wimbledon I do expect her to get back into the top 50.

Thing about Monica is she wasn't the finished article in 2008, and she certainly is not the finished article now either. There's still much to improve. I don't actually believe we will see the best of Monica for another 2 to 4 years TBH.

Well done Moni! :cheer:

But as I said in her thread, she can profit from the windy weather conditions more than any other player. She isn't completely dependant on her serve like many other ballbashers like Keothavong and co. who badly lost yeasterday and scored one DF after another.

Her slices and tricky drop shots become even more dangerous for the opponent than by normal weather conditions. :)

I hope she can beat Wörle and reach the main draw there! :cheer:

You do know you're making a fool of yourself, right? There was absolutely no need to bring my fave into this, because the last time I checked, noone called her game "unique" and amazing. I just stated my opinion and you got all defensive and gave me a badrep bashing my fave. :spit: Kind of pitiful, especially if the age that your profile (used to?) say you are is true.

Fine. You stated your opinion. And I told you what I thought of it. Further I would hardly describe my response to your comments in this thread as defensive, indeed I agreed with some of them and I acknowledged Monica can frequently have bad days when she doesn't play well, and regarding the bad rep, if you can't take a light hearted private rib that is your problem. Is the deal that you can state your opionion but no one else can state their opinion back at you then?
