WOW :worship: from Pav
Best final match in quite a while. JJ had a BAD BP conversion but actually Pav's serve saved her in 3rd set. And when Pav had one chance, she took it.

JJ  don't take this 6th slam final too seriously. Focus on IW :)

VERY, VERY impressed by Pav despite her playing awful in 1st set. Good groundstroke and a good serve.

That's fucking embarassing, Jelena. Shanking forehands like Roger Federer, awful BP conversion and can't return a serve over 100mph even though she used to be the best returner in the world. Damn shame.

Pavlyuchenkova is such a generic baseliner. She seems to get bigger every time I see her.

Jj wasted like a zillion of BP while it took Pavly just one to break in the 3rd :o
JJ didn't play badly and her backhand is back.Missed a bit of luck today but Pavly did well to somehow hang in there on all her disputed service games in that 3rd.Some great serving from her.

Hasn't that basically been Jelena's game since the start of the 09 season? She's really been in a slump since after the 2008 season with momentary glimpses of life to keep her ranking afloat, then she starts sucking again.

Anyways, GL to Jelena because the bulk of her points come from here until the FO.

so many overreactions (and a lot of crap posted too).Jelena's second part of 2010 was painful with all the injuries etc...
She just made 2 SF and a final in 3 weeks, playing quite good tennis again and losing to the eventual champ each time (and probably could have won each of these matches). She's getting her tennis and her mind back where it was and is healthy so I don't think there is any reason to be so negative.

Jankovic's harmless midcourt puffballs made Chunkova look like such quality opposition.

Sort of true. Jankovic seemed in control whenever she managed to dictate, but didn't do it often enough after the 1st set and reverted to flat out pushing by default. Babyfat served well though, and worked the points fairly well instead of just trying to bash Jankovic off the court. Good angles from both BH and FH, moved well enough to stay in the neutral rallies and won a fair number of the lengthier ones in the last two sets.

Babyfat isn't a future dominant #1 or anything, but every once in a while she'll play a good match like this one and leave me wondering why she hasn't done a thing at the Slams yet.

I'm so HAPPY. YES.

Well, her tactics of hitting balls right to Pavlyu's racquet instead of moving her around the court was quite stupid, you must admit. Had she used her brain just a bit, she could have won the match.

It is uncomfortable seeing JJ make so many routine errors and barely getting to wide balls (throwing up nothing lobs all the time). That slice looks so awkward :tape:. Needs an attitude makeover soon too. Didn't care at all about all the missed chances and abysmal play.

Pavlyuchenkova has an excellent serve, both 1st and 2nd, and manages to keep her cool throughout. Dodgy forehand, great backhand, iron feet. Really would benefit greatly from 10 fewer pounds.

Mar 7th, 2011, 01:19 AM
To be honest, someone had to prove a point to JJ. She wasn't playing good this week and it needs to be said. Coming to the final with the game in this state is encouraging in a way, because at lesat she's more determined, but (just like in the match against Zvonareva) she's lost it at the very end.

Like I said, I'm happy to see she's willing to win but her game is such a mess. I'm maybe inventing a boiled water, but what about hiring a(n actual) coach?

She did in the first and just had more trouble to do it afterward (or tried not to give too much angles to Pavly who can deal with it quite effectively ).She was still the one dominating the rallies in the first half of the 3rd while Pavly was mostly relying on her serve.Had she take some of these BP no one would complain.

Well, Pavlyu played well, but she's not exactly Serena, so it's normal the match was on Jelena's hands. Her inability to stick to winning tactics for more than a set and a poor attitude cost her the title which isn't a big deal in itself but is still quite embarrassing and unnecessary, and it shows how Jelena seems unable to fully regain her self-confidence and the right attitude. OTOH, she's always had such retarded losses in finals (Beijing 07, S'H...(the Dutch grass tourney I can't spell or pronounce 07) but this has such a dampening effect on the improvement she made in the past several weeks. It's like a circle - she regains some game and confidence, then loses it all again etc.

Well, her tactics of hitting balls right to Pavlyu's racquet instead of moving her around the court was quite stupid, you must admit.

The problem is the opponent has its own ideas what is supposed to happen on the court and that might not always correspond with the other player.

It was a good match and Pavyluchenkova always came up with the right answers in the crucial moments. The biggest mistake Jankovic made was that she didn´t step on Pavlyuchenkova´s throat at the beginning of the 2nd set. Pavlyuchenkova looked like a coke condom had blown in the babyfat stomach, but Jankovic let her guard down thinking the match was already over.

Well done Anastasia. I did not believe that she would have the stamina to go three sets against Jankovic. If she gets herself fit and starts doing better at the slams I see no reason why she can't squeak into the top ten.

Jelena really should have won this match but when you compare her recent results to what she was doing the previous 6 months it's hard to be disappointed in her. Who knows, maybe by the time Roland Garros and/or Wimbledon hits she will be at her peak and will finally win a slam? Stranger things have happened.

I don´t think movement or stamina are really a big issue with her. The main problem is that I assume she has little deep muscle mass and visible muscles/definition in general. As a result, when she plays a lot she suffers from those nagging little injuries to her shoulder, thighs, wrist and whatnot. Those little injuries eventually turn into a bigger injury and you are in deep sh*t.

Really? You haven't seen Ballbashlena? :rolls:

Jelena wishes she could ball bash. She tried it once and failed dismally.

All she did was bulk up, which made her slower, which might've been a reasonable trade off had she capitalized on her extra power and played aggressively in matches, but she continued to play her defensive gamestyle whilst being a good step and a half slower.

All that did for her was destroy her confidence from 2008, and unfortunately it seems she may never get it back.

Nastya just has more firepower than Jelena, so when she's on, as she was in the final two sets, Jelena has to be at her very best to counter her. Obviously, despite Pav playing well in this match, if Jelena had carried on playing like she had in the first set the result would likely have gone the other way.

Great win Nastya, very impressive defence of your first title, ending the run of Dulko and then your first final against a top 10 player and you win it. 3 wins and 0 losses in finals.

All that after a pretty shoddy first round when she nearly went out to Danilidou.

Watched the final last night on Super Tennis. Well, I've never seen this event before, surprised it was on hardcourt and not on clay.

But anyway, I agree with the posts I've read, Pavlyuchenkova played very well in the 2nd and 3rd sets, its nice to see in the womens game that a player's serve can get them out out of trouble on break points with aces and unreturnables, good to see.

At the same time, I agree Jankovic should have played better. Jankovic knew Pavy was serving to her forehand on break points in the ad court, she could have stood a bit more over there anticipating it, that might have put doubt in Pavy's mind with more space to the backhand, forcing her to serve there, she might have missed more and Jankovic might have gotten more 2nd serves to exploit. But maybe Jankovic doesn't deal too often with good serving on the tour so didn't think about those types of possibilities to get into the opponents mind.

I would also like to see Pavlyuchenkova get into shape.

Great couple of weeks for Jelena in terms of winning matches again finally after her ruinous back half of 2010, yet disappointing result in this final. So many BP opportunities wasted and JJ did not employ enough strategy to get Pav out of her hitting zone in the last 2 sets. :fiery: Good luck in IW, lots of points to defend in the months ahead! :scared:

Well done Anstasia, great win! Another top 10 scalp and in a final it's even better! LOL at all these obsessed JJ-Fans who thought Jelena would take this one easily in 2 sets  Glad Anastasia proved them wrong. Impressive title defence, I hope she can maintain that form for IW and Miami. As these 2 are the last HC-Tournaments in quiet a while I hope she can play some good Tennis there. But I'm satisfied for the moment :)

It was a good week for Jelena as well, she just let Anastasia dominate too much in the last 2 sets. Curious to see how she will do in Indian Wells.

I love seeing Jelena lose especially when her mother is there sipping from her endless water bottles.

Have you already forgotten last year when she played 6 sets on the last day

I love Jelena's new and improved serve, but she's sacrificed her formerly-GOAT ROS for it. Really hurt her, as it shows with the 2/15 BP conversion rate.

But Pav did a good job serving well when BP down.

JJ did not want to win some MM tournament so she showed she was boss for one set and then let Pav take the honours. She should win a medal for this!

Well, she's picking doubles partners in totally random order, and Pavlyucha's name simply popped out this time :D
