Congrats Jelena! First title in a long time. :cheer:

Good comeback in the second, Lucie was serving for the match.
Lucie had a lot of chances in the third too was leading 3-1 I think but ended up giving away too many breaks.

Well, congrats to Jelena, but right now I am a bit annoyed. Lucie should have really won this in two sets, either 6:2, 6:4, or 6:2, 7:6 (she was slightly better in the tiebreak than Dokic - but again, she leads 6:5 and has a match point a hits her backhand return of Dokic´s second serve to the net).

I have followed this sport for five years now, and never have I felt so delighted, so enthralled, so thrilled or so amazed by anything within the world of tennis. I fell in love with Jelena in Brisbane 2009, when she lost in a tight two-setter to Mauresmo. Shortly after, she went on her big AO run. I cried when she beat Kleybanova, but that feeling is incomparable to this.

While I don't think I needed reminding, thank you for reiterating to me just why I support you Jelena. Through thick and thin, and through the highs and the MANY lows, you still remain my utmost favourite player. No matter whether you have faded into sub-100, $75k-playing relative obscurity, or whether you have just won your first title in nine years, I will continue to support you and cherish every match I get to watch of yours, no matter how much of a hot mess it is or how error-riddled it was.

I was genuinely considering going to sleep when I was supposed to tonight, as the final was scheduled later than that. I doubted Jelena but a couple of my friends and a little voice inside my head told me that I should just wait it out, watch it, wait & see... it was her first final in years, after all. So I did.

It was the best decision I have made this year.

I love you so much Jelena. You are the most incredible tennis player I have ever had the pleasure of watching and I cannot really summarise just how overwhelmed I feel at the moment.

Well done sweetheart.

I watched this up until 3-4* to Safarova in the second or something, and went away assuming this was a done deal. Dokic was winning hardly any rallies, as Safarova was moving much better, hitting with depth and accuracy and barely missing any rally shots. Dokic's footwork was lazy (she kept lunging for balls), and the depth of Safarova's shots was keeping her pinned way behind the baseline.

I came back after the ref blew for HT on the Liverpool match to check the final score and to my astonishment found out that this was still going on. But by then the livestream was overburdened and working only intermittently, and I could catch only a glimpse of a few games here and there. I did see the final game though, with a tired Dokic fighting as if her life depended on this match, and hitting huge winners to set up the last two MPs.

Dokic willed herself to this win, and regardless of the actual relevance of this tournament, I'm sure this means the world to her and to her long-suffering fans. :worship: to her and to them.

Every player has a past and a road they took to get where they are now. Hers was turbulent but at the end of the day she is just one of the 32 players in this draw, competing for the title. What happens in that tournament is the only thing that matters for that tournament, and you took the words right out of my mouth. A set and a break down against Schiavone, same situation against Nara, set point down against Jovanovski and championship point down against Safarova. She carried herself to this title, and FORTUNE favours the brave. Jelena Dokic is the brave.

OK, but then again, it seems to be strange to say that "justice was rightly served" in this match. I mean, if Lucie had somehow won the tiebreak (or the match), it would have been some kind of injustice to Dokic? After all, it wasn´t like Lucie wasn´t trying hard herself, right?

No, because if Lucie had won the tiebreak it wouldn't have been because she got lucky. It wasn't a matter of justified luck since she was the one trying to take it until it got to that stage. If Jelena is lucky because Lucie 'choked,' Lucie closing the match out successfully wouldn't put this sort of 'luck' into the equation at all.

As for whether it would have been an injustice toward Jelena HAD she lost the tiebreak, this is not the case at all. Justice being rightfully served has more to do with Jelena and nothing to do with Lucie.

Yeah, I can agree with this different wording.

Although I have to admit that one of the reasons I really wished Lucie would have won the final was beacause I fully expected that otherwise this board would be immediately flooded with huge amount of over the top posts like "justice rightly served" etc.

So f**cking frustrating for Lucie. :o :sobbing: She had numerous chances to kill off the match but always left the door open for Dokic to have a chance. Tough loss to recover from.

Congrats to Dokic though, her never say die attitude was very admirable and after a good week too. I just hope Lucie takes the positives from reaching the final and signs of more consistency.

Entertaining match overall, with several plot twists and unexpected turnarounds, played in front of a sizable crowd (close to a full house), which is always nice to see.

Safarova will kick herself for letting this one slip away, but Dokic did well to hang in there and never gave up. She was as intense as I've ever seen her in that last, decisive game. Holding a WTA trophy after so many years must feel very special indeed... I still remember the first time I saw her on TV, that famous R1 thrashing of Hingis at Wimbledon that sent shock waves throughout the tennis world... I wonder how many Dokic fans on this forum are old enough to have actually followed her entire career from the beginning?

There's something surreal about Jelena Dokic winning a WTA event. Nice news for the fans, and a slap in the face of those who said she didn't have it in her anymore. What's most important now is that this doesn't become an isolated highlight like the AO 2009, but that it becomes a springboard to a consistent comeback to the WTA level.

Matej
Mar 6th, 2011, 03:03 PM
No, because if Lucie had won the tiebreak it wouldn't have been because she got lucky. It wasn't a matter of justified luck since she was the one trying to take it until it got to that stage. If Jelena is lucky because Lucie 'choked,' Lucie closing the match out successfully wouldn't put this sort of 'luck' into the equation at all.

As for whether it would have been an injustice toward Jelena HAD she lost the tiebreak, this is not the case at all. Justice being rightfully served has more to do with Jelena and nothing to do with Lucie.

It wasn´t me who said that Jelena won because of luck.

Anyway, in that case you should have said simply "I´m so, so happy that Jelena won, because I am big fan of her".

"Lucie beat so many good players to reach the final this week. I don't know how I came back against her today," Dokic declared. "This is my second time in Malaysia - I was here 10 years ago for the first time so it has been a while. But I've been here nearly two weeks this time and it has been fantastic."

-

"Thanks to everyone who made this event possible, it was a pleasure to play here," the 27-year-old Dokic said to the crowd. "I have to especially thank the two people who were here with me, my boyfriend and my brother. I love you guys. Without you I wouldn't have been able to do this. I hope to come back next year and try to play well again here. Now I have to try and make my flight!"

But finally all the hard work is paying off for Jelena which can also be described as justice after all these difficult years for her. ;)

What a ridiculously tense and amazing match this was, particularly as a Dokic supporter obviously. I haven't felt like that since AO 2009. Nothing in Paris this year even came close. What a fighter, not just in this match, but all week; this was the 3rd match she's won where she's lost the first set and won the 2nd in a tiebreak and gone on to win. Unbelievable.

I'm so SO proud of Jelena. Like, I can't even express or quantify it in words cause it couldn't be done justice. Can't think of someone who deserves it more, not only for what she's been through, but also for having the perseverance to be where she is today. And that doesnt just go for her tennis, but her life as well; she's battled depression for several years now and she's beating her own demons to the ground. I'm not saying this title will cure all her mental problems and depression, but just the fact that her attitude has changed and her motivation is higher than ever is proof in and of itself that she's in a much better place mentally now than she has been in a long time. Again, I'm beyond proud of her, and happy for her, and also on some level proud of myself for sticking by her all these years even when she took months off and lost in Challenger quallies consistently. I love this girl to bits and will never stop supporting her. I'm honored to consider myself a fan and she's seriously inspired me so much.

Jelena... You are amazing. Congratulations, babe! :hearts:

From the WTAtour site :

Dokic ended several dry periods: first WTA semifinal in seven years (Tokyo in February 2004) and first WTA final in eight years (Zürich in October 2003); her last WTA title came nine years ago (Birmingham in June 2002). The Aussie's win over No.5-ranked French Open winner Schiavone was also her first Top 5 win since that week in Zürich (a semifinal win over then-No.1 Kim Clijsters).

Finally

I think it's the biggest bombshell of past few years! A win out of nowhere for Jelena Dokic.

I'm a bit surprised by those who keep saying it's a "win out of nowhere."

It really isn't.

Granted, she hasn't won a tournament in 9 1/2 years.

Still, if you look at her form for the first two months of this year, it's not that surprising.

This is the first time in a LONG TIME that she's showed up week after week to WTA events.

Just 3 weeks ago in Paris, she made the QF at a premiere event, and beat Safarova and Petrova in the first two rounds, and then took out Schiavone here. You don't do that unless your form is quite good, and hers was (especially in Paris).

Most importantly, she hasn't lost to anyone below her ranking the whole year. That shows that she's been quite consistent. She's had a couple bad matches against really good players (Clijsters, Panetta, Groth), but she's been getting better and better and has shown she can beat the top players.

Nobody ever doubted her natural talent. What was in doubt before was her commitment and mental strength. Anyone watching her the first 2 months know that's been as good as ever -- better than ever -- so while shocking, this win isn't "out of nowhere."

A committed, mentally and physically healthy Jelena Dokic is a threat to beat most players on the tour.

Agreed. What's even better about her record is that she has only lost to one player outside of the top 32 in seven tournaments.

Hopefully she keeps her name down for that Bahamas ITF. It's a tough draw, but the more she wins, the higher she rises, the easier the draws get.

Im doing something right since you felt the need to respond to a "troll" as you call it.

Don't mistake contempt for approval.

I cannot put into words what I am feeling right now. All I have to say it that I've patiently waited over 8 years for this! I got into tennis fairly late in regards to Dokic's younger years (summer of 2002) so I, unfortunately, was not following her when she was an up and coming top player nor when she was winning all her titles. I was there, however, all throughout her downfall, turmoil, family issues and whatnot which is why this win, even though a "small" tournament means so much right now! I never stopped being a Dokic fan nor will I ever and obviously the fame, titles, money and what have you don't matter to me as I don't turn my back on my faves once they start to suck, drop down in the rankings, or are simply replaced as the flavor of the month.

Keep on going Jelena, all your fans are behind you and wish you nothing but the very best!!!:hearts::hearts:

Happy would be an understatement to describe how I feel about Jelena in the winner's circle again. I admit, I had my doubts these past couple of years about her ever coming back, but it looks like she definitely proved me wrong! :D

Love her fighting spirit this week the most. Haven't seen that in a while from her. :hearts:

It's just so good, so positive, so rewarding for her fans that NEVER EVER gave up on her. Fans gave up on her after 2003, and then some more after 2006's fail attempt, and then all those withdrawals from 10ks following that, and then some more after an abysmal 2009 with fans writing off her AO run as a fluke.

It just feels too good. :sobbing:

We saw Dokic in Australia when she won her way back to the main draw. She barely missed her shots when she lost these matches. Soon, she would power her way to a title. I knew it.
Smart girl. Never too late.

Same. As with all my faves, I started liking Jelena the minute the shit hit the fan and right after she won her last title.

For most fans this will be the first time they have ever witnessed her win a WTA event.

Dokic won the Malayasian Open - That is all that matters - END OF STORY !! Hopfully Dokic will win more tournaments and progress further in all her tournaments than her 2010results. She is on the way up already down to ranking 61 from 92 in a few weeks!

What about Stosur....

She's totally irrelevant... Hasnt won a title since Charleston, out of clay she's top 40 at maximum...

But if Dokic could play well consistently she would be Australia number 1 for sure

 If Sam is "totally irrelevant", what is Ivanovic?

I don't want to insult Ana.. but you are too much.
