Zhao: those stats are incorrect. You took the UE numbers from just the "errors" columns.

(23:37:09) <versailles> dokic: 15 winners, 16 ue (3 aces, 1 df)

It just goes to show how important matchplay is.

Krajicek was so damn awful in the first set, and after blasting the ball around for the first few games, Jelena quickly realised it and reigned in her game. She was much more consistent and kept her depth, and when she was aggressive, she mostly played the margins and wrong-footed Krajicek rather than trying to change the direction of the ball. She hit only 5 unforced errors in the first set (and 6 winners). The old Jelena would've just continued to blast the ball, eventually giving Krajicek a chance to get back into the game.

Krajicek improved in set two though, serving better and putting quite a bit of pressure on Jelena's service game, but Jelena never faltered. She stuck to her consistency and then upped the pace of her strokes a little towards the end, coming up with some huge groundies in the last few games.

So happy for her.

Krajicek's serve was decent overall (though she struggled to keep the 1st serve % over 50% throughout the match), but her ground game was pretty awful. UE festival on the FH side, BH wasn't much better, footwork was generally bad. Credit to Dokic though, she served pretty well and, more importantly, actually showed some situational awareness by adjusting her game to her opponent's error-riddled play instead of taking needless risks. She's got a pretty good rhythm at the moment, including on her serve, and managed to keep the DFs to a minimum.

Very humid conditions in KL, as can be expected. Courtside cameras kept fogging up. Players must feel like they're playing in a tropical greenhouse.

Jelena will never be a player who uses tons of strategy and variety. She'll always have to rely mostly on power.

BUT, this is definitely a smarter and more mature Jelena Dokic who can read the court and the other player quite well and even make some small adjustments. Over the last month, there have been numerous times when she started reading the other player's serve, anticipating their tendencies, and even altering her own patterns a bit.

Against Safarova, Lucie's coach said on-court that Dokic was reading all her serves and that Safarova had to change the pattern. She's doing more thinking out there than she ever did before - again, she's never going to be a Martina-Hingis-style-strategist, but she's definitely smarter on the court as compared even to a couple years ago.

Solid match from Dokic. Knew when to rally and when to go for her shots, kept her UE count down to an acceptable level, served fairly well (though Krajicek is hardly a good gauge re: serve effectiveness; it was only halfway through the second set that she began returning a few of Dokic's 1st serves).

Krajicek served subpar for her usual standards, but her serve is still there (many free points off her 1st, good 2nd serve), as are her volleys. Her reflexes and anticipation on ROS remain club player level, but suffering from the same problem didn't prevent others like say Srebotnik and to a lesser extent Safarova from having reasonably successful top 40 careers. The problem is that Krajicek's ground game, fairly solid in her prime, has deteriorated terribly; anything hit directly at her she'll fumble, anything hit away from her she'll take ages to react and shift direction and won't reach it in time to hit the ball with any kind of assertiveness. She remains extremely easy to wrongfoot, but above all her FH is a mess; typically sets up too early and hits it too late due to lazy footwork, with her contact point all over the place. She also can't return anything hit deep to her BH corner. She mostly took to pushing in the relatively few rallies that were played, and even then it was always her who made the error first.

 You misunderstood me. I didn't mean it like that.

And to the people trying to compare them, it's stupid - that wasn't the point. My point was that he had a great run but his ranking rose after the cutoff date. And it's the same with Jelena. She's obviously a former top 5 player and a popular and well-known figure on tour, so they may choose to give her a WC as they did in Dubai.

Based on facts. ;) And you can compare men and women regarding their career achievements.
Stop arguing over useless, trivial things like whether Dokic is better than Raonic. :o Just feeds the negative reputation Dokic fans have. And to be blunt, if you're going by this year, Raonic is in a whole different league altogether.

Anyway, Jelena... no words can describe how proud I am. :worship: Who would have thought after all these years that we'd see her in another WTA final? I must admit even though I've always stuck by her, I had my doubts. So, so happy to see her motivated and playing well again. She really deserves it, especially this year since it seems for the first time in ages that she's really committed to working hard and playing a consistent schedule. Leads me to believe she's probably in a much better place mentally as well as physically, which is even better news. :D

Good luck in the final, sweetie  :hearts: :D Whatever happens, she should really be proud of what she's done this week and she'd have instilled the belief in herself that she can still win titles on the WTA level. AJDE! :armed:

I hope Miami ends up giving her an MWC, regardless of what happens tomorrow...

In a nutshell...

2006? Won AO WC, made some noise but had coaching changes and still tormented by father.
2007? Missing in action.
2008? Couldn't qualify for AO. Threw a fit at Tennis Australia.
2009? Won the AO wildcard playoffs, reached AO QF but suffered bad scheduling after AO and retired against Dementieva at RG. Diagnosed with illness.
2010? Plagued by injuries and coaching changes. Highlights included 3 ITF tournament wins.
2011? Finally making a serious comeback, having put personal troubles behind and regaining full fitness.

Best of luck tomorrow Jelena, always behind you and supporting you no matter what!!!:hearts:
