We'll see if Dinara's doubles success with Galya can carry over to the singles court somehow...am probably grasping at straws but...oh well...even a longshot hope is better than none at all

True!!
Back to back wins is what she needs currently.
But I ain't expecting too much in IW or Miami,4-5 Singles matches will be good preparation for the Clay court season. :)

The Dubs Final starts at 2 a.m. in Mexico City...and not until 3 a.m. in MY region of the country...sorry,Dinarik:o---but good luck with Galya:hug:

This would be Dinara's first title since the 2009 Portoroz tourney that she was criticized--at TF--for entering as the WTA #1 seed...and Dinarik's first dubs title since she won IW with Miss Vesnina almost exactly 3 years ago.VAMOS,Dinara!!:bounce:

first, she needs a WC into Miami. second, beating a noname upcoming player outside the top100 is not the same winning matches on Premier level.

She has got 2 Singles matches already at KL.
I think a player of Dinara's caliber should get at least 3 matches in all at IW and Miami.
And when she was partially injured last year, she beat the likes of Francesca Schiavone,Maria Kirilenko and Daniela Hantuchova,so now she is fully fit and I don't see any reason why she can't win big matches now.

Oftentimes, they lump the Doubles results together in the news section on the WTA webpage, but Dinara's win with Galya got its own separate notice.Perhaps they're happy to see Dinara having success in some way...and they really want her to match that in Singles....Safarova said some nice things about Dinara's play in KL but I'm not sure if that's a case where Lucie was being honest or just nice:o

good thing she can't get any seed in the 1st round. (coz theyall have BYE  )

As the link Eliene posted states, she is two handed both sides. She serves huge and hits very hard, but is also very erratic. She moves poorly. There probably won't be long rallies.

6weeks prior tournaments, thats is 1 week beofe Stuttgart. ;)

actually i'm a bit confused about WC's. A random player can get only 3 per year. But if a player had at least 10 seasons on tour, she can get some extra. 2002-2011 is exactly 10, so Dinara could get it. (need to check rulebooks again.)

Any player who is a past champion of a SINGLES Grand Slam,or a Premier WTA Championships can accept UNLIMITED WCs in a calendar year.

redsonja
Mar 11th, 2011, 01:21 PM
There are 19 "Premier" events a year. There's no way they mean that everyone who wins one of those tournaments gets unlimited wild cards for life. If that were true, Sabine Lisicki would never have to play qualies, because she won Charleston in 2009. And that is obviously not true.

Even if you kept it to just Premier mandatories... no.

Also, the YEC is the only WTA "championship" tournament, and is a Premier event.

Norby,I play the game fairly;I'm no hypocrite, and I criticized Ana for whoring WCs last year and complaining when some of the tourneys didn't wanna give her slumping ass a WC.....You should know that I don't give a rat's ass whether you agree with me or not,so stop your damned crybaby whining!:p....I don't have any ETHICAL objections if Dinara chooses to whore WCs;I'd simply PREFER that she played smaller tourneys and gradually worked her way back into form instead of getting early-round ass-kickings at Premiers when she's not ready to face elite competition...but let's see if she can regain her old level with her current plan---maybe she'll shock us,huh?;)

EDIT:See,Norby??Cara figured out what I was saying...time for you to take one of those Interpreting Internet English courses(wink, wink)

okay, looks like i get it now. i just found your post a bit "too much". She played 3 Int tournaments so far this year, and now on the waiting list of Fes and Barcelona, i don't know how she could do more to "please" people...

( is this a new rule that i'm not allowed to cry or be whinny? did i miss something? :ras: )

redsonja
Mar 12th, 2011, 12:46 PM
 But it's impossible for her to whore wild cards. She just doesn't have that many to use. It's totally different from Ana, who as a Slam winner has unlimited wild cards and could whore it up all she wanted.

It wouldn't be out of line for Dinara to drop back and play a few $100k and $50ks. But it's also not so out of line for her to want to play Premier events where, if she manages to get a couple of wins, she can pick up a good number of points. Again, she literally cannot whore wild cards. She's going to have to pick and choose. So far I think she's done that fairly well.

The only way I see this argument working at all is if you think she just shouldn't use the wild cards she has available to her.

C. Drone
Mar 12th, 2011, 01:12 PM
She can get 3MD + 3Q WC by default.
+ 3 (MD or Q) WC because of this rule, most probably. page 61 in rulebook. But i would like to hear a wta official about this.
iv. Players who have competed in WTA Tournaments for 10 Tour
Years or more (not necessarily consecutively) will be allowed
three (3) additional Wild Cards, either in Main Draw or in
Qualifying, in both singles and doubles.

so this can be 6 Main Draw WC. If she use them only for premiers and plays some Internationals too, she has chance to go up in rankings.

( is this a new rule that i'm not allowed to cry or be whinny? did i miss something? :ras: )Just having fun with you since you're the only frequent guy visitor here;),and I also made a mistake because,as c-H-ristina pointed out,Ana had more liberty to whore WCs and was abusing the privilege,attitude-wise...but Dinara doesn't have that same opportunity right now....Dinarik really hasn't done anything wrong;I was just having flashbacks over the Serbian drama last year and I incorrectly feared that Dinara would do the same...but,as c-H-ristina explained, that's not possible

Just to get it out of the way first, should I assume that you all wanna just close the Live Scores Thread??It's a bit difficult keeping pace in the Tournament thread when we get point-by-point,blink-by-blink updates every half second but,on a much brighter side,I'm glad that Dinara is giving us matches for which we can keep score...and even winning twice in a row at that!!!Sounds so strange to consider that an accomplishment but the dry spell was so low,and the young folks ARE revitalizing a thread with an enthisiasm that's been missing for most of the past few months,so that's another positive.

Stosur might be the most erratic player of anyone in the Top 10;yet,a victory against her would be notably more significant than today's was,IMO...a sign that Dinarik truly IS getting closer

Good old mum.

Against Sam will be very interesting. I'm sure other players are taking notice that Dinara is showing signs of returning to form, so Sam will come prepared for a tough match. A win would be big for Dinara, a loss would be no disgrace.

A stream would certainly be nice to actually see what Dinara is doing on court.

uh, 16DF is good serving now?
hope ES shows this afternoon, Sam should have played really-really bad if she couldn't win a set. i mean more than 20% of her points came from Dinara's DF. THATS A LOT.

I agree with this. Without seeing the match, it's hard to conclude Dinara served well- in fact, with 16 DF, we'd have to conclude she served badly. I'd also guess Sam played poorly. But Dinara is probably rallying and returning better than before.

If we look at the stats to see what was happening on second serve, we can see she hit 32 second serves. Of those 32 second serves, she missed 16, exactly half of them :help: :tape:, for a 50% success ratio. However, of the 16 second serves she landed, she won 12 of those points. Still, that means her second serve percentage was actually lower than her first serve percentage- she got 64% of first serves in but only 50% of second serves in. This is very concerning and makes one think she was not handling the pressure of second serves very well at all. Despite the other good things this is pretty bad. Every time she was going to hit a second serve you knew she had a 50% chance of doublefaulting. It's amazing to be able to win a match like that, against quality opposition.

There are good signs for sure though. But with 16DF it's a minor miracle that she was only broken 3 times. That must mean she's hitting the ball better- off the ground anyway. I would be interested to see exactly what Sam was doing with her serve. Dinara did very well on Sam's first serve, reducing her to only winning 55% of first serve points. That's almost the same as Sam's stats on the second serve. Did Sam get in a rut of repeatedly hitting the same kick serve, which helped Dina get a rhythm on the return? Dina is tall and strong so by definition the kick serve to the bh is less effective against her. Sam could be a truly fearsome server if she mixed in more flat and slice serves on the first serve, as well as body serves, instead of going for the kick to the bh all day long. To be reduced to winning 55% only on her first serve is a disaster for her and one of the key stats that Dina won in this match.

Another thing to note: Dinara won 67% of points when she actually got the second serve in, and she had almost identical stats when she got the first serve in- 68% won.

From these stats we can also conclude that her first serve was not actually giving her an advantage compared to her second serve. Overall, it seems like Dinara won despite of her serve, rather than because of her serve. That's okay though, for her. Her serve was never that good, and she always relied on her groundies much more. So the core of her game is beginning to function.

Dina always had serve problems, so the fact that they remain is not necessarily as big a problem as it is for other players. But having only a 50-50 chance of the second serve going in is a little too much. Par for Dinara at this stage is probably what she produced against Dani- 8DF out of 28 second serves, or having about a 30% chance of doublefaulting on any given second serve. Pretty bad for most pros, but okay for Dinara (at least for the next few months).

HowardH
Mar 15th, 2011, 09:54 AM
The indication I'm getting from comments around the board is that this was not a high quality match. Sam's rallying was particularly abysmal, apparently. But it seems at least Dina was hitting heavier than before.

I would like to see it for myself though. Different people see matches differently.

redsonja
Mar 15th, 2011, 10:36 AM
I've heard differing things about Dinara's performance, but everyone seems to have thought Sam absolutely sucked. Still an amazing win for Dinara, but if you're looking for a way she could possibly serve 16 double faults in 2 sets and only get broken three times, I think you need look no farther than her opponent's quality of play.

Or lack thereof.

yes.the DFs is crazy!but it's much better than before few DFs and high rate of 1st serve in but it's useless she couldnt build any advantage by serve.her serve was too weak!I just hope she will improve her serve slowly with more matches she plays.neednt so hurry:p
The most important thing is she gets some confidence,at least now it's not hopeless anymore to see her play:D it's still early to talk about something like if she will be top10 or even top1 again, focus on every match at the moment.Davai

Well, after seeing the match I have the following conclusions-
Dinara's serve was shaky, but she was going for it.Big serves you know,so 16 DFs had to come.
When it comes to ground strokes, again Dinara was trying to be aggressive which is good,in the process hitting winners as well as UE's.
Well, the main change was mentally, she was fighting for every point, she had that determination to win in her eyes, just showed how much she wanted to win.
As Dinara herself said "You can't forget playing tennis,it's just the problem lies with the head, mental " something like that. :p

And she was real solid mentally today.
As for DFs,well she used to hit a lot of DFs when she was No.1 as well, not 16 though. :tape:
