Williams Upsets Kirilenko in Rome
Venus takes out #2 Seed in Straight Sets

Venus Williams hits a shot to Maria Kirilenko in the round of 16 in Rome. Williams won 64 76
*
ROME -- World #15 Venus Williams had a great start for her quest to win her first tour title in Rome, beating Maria Kirilenko in the round of 16 6-4 7-6.
*
After suffering a loss last week in Amelia Island, Venus came to Rome with many questions. Was she healthy? Was she ready to perform well on clay? Would she fade until the grass season came? The opening match in Rome answered it all.
*
"Last week in Amelia Island, it was a difficult week. My coach was away for personal reasons, so I felt lost. I was injured and probably shouldn't have played. All credit to Dom, who beat me, but it wasn't me out there. It's hard to be on the tennis court when your heart and mine are with your coach, who lost someone close to them," Venus said in a press conference. "I want to thank everyone who offered support though. It was very nice."
*
This week in Rome, Venus' coach is back and things seem to be coming together. Facing world's #2 Maria Kirilenko in the opening round, Venus was set up for a rematch of the Auckland Final. In the final of Auckland, Kirilenko stormed to a 63 60 victory. This time, Venus was prepared.
*
"I knew going in how she played. I remembered the Auckland final so well. It was my best result and Maria was at her peak. I just knew I had to excute and stay confident," Venus said.
*
Venus' plan worked and the result was a 6-4 7-6[5] victory over the #2 ranked player in the world. "It's not my biggest win ever, that goes to world's #1 Myskina at the Australian, but it's up there," Venus beamed after the match. "I'm so happy, because I know clay isn't my strongest surface."
*
In the quarter finals, Venus is expected to play Daniela Hantuchova.
*
"I've never played her before, she's a great player. I have so much respect for every girl on the tour, everyone is out here trying to do their best. I"m sure the match will be tough."
*

Venus Williams returns a shot to Daniela Hantuchova in the Quarter Finals of Rome. Williams beat Hantuchova 62 57 64
*
ROME -- For the first time in her young career, Venus Williams has reached the semi finals of a clay event, a surface she claims isn't her favorite.
*
A day after beating #2 Maria Kirilenko, Venus Williams took out unseeded Daniela Hantuchova 62 57 64 in the quarter finals to reach the semi finals of Rome.
*
Williams said after her first round win that clay isn't her best surface, but based on this result you wouldn't have guessed it.
*
"A lot of things played into it," Venus admitted after her three set win. "Maybe clay isn't the best surface for Maria or Daniela. Whatever the reason, I'll take it."
*
After a routine opening set, Hantuchova stunned Venus by hanging in there and taking the second set. "I knew that Daniela woud fight. Everyone on tour wants to win so badly. Everyone wants to reach semi finals, finals of tournaments. It's why we play."
*
In the third set, Venus used her superior serve to win the match and advance to the semi finals. "I just thought to myself, "this is a great chance," I took my chances and here I am. All the credit to Hantuchova, she played so well. I'm just glad I got through."
*
In the semi finals, Williams will tackle Australian Open Champ, #6 Britney Spears. "Britney beat me easily at the Australian. I'll try my best tomorrow and I hope to reach my second final."

Wicked Williams: Venus Stuns Spears to Reach Rome Final
Venus tops Australian Open champ to reach 2nd career final

Venus Williams celebrates her victory over Australian Open winner Britney Spears, winning 76 64
*
ROME -- Venus Williams got a little revenge in Rome today.
*
In the semi finals of the tier one tournament, Williams faced Australian Open champ, #6 seeded Britney Spears. At the Australian, Spears took out Williams 6-3 6-3 in the quarter finals. Today was another story, as Williams upset Spears 7-6 6-4 to reach the final.
*
The first set neither player faced a break point and they stayed on serve in the tiebreak, until Venus went up 6-5. Serving down set point, Spears missed her first serve and Venus pounded her two handed backhand down the line for a return winner on set point.
*
"The first set was as close as they get," Venus said after the match. "I just remember thinking on set point that I had to go for it because if I didn't, Britney would capitalize on it. That's why she's a two time Slam winner, she steps it up when she has too."
*
The second set, Spears had an early lapse on her serve and Venus broke early. Venus held on to the one break of serve in the second set and closed it out on her serve.
*
"Even though I broke, I was thinking 'this is a big game", when I was serving for the match. I never think I have the match until it's over," Venus told the press. "Britney is such a great player, I have so much respect for her. I'm just so glad I got through to my second final."
*
The first time Venus reached the final of an event was back in Auckland of this year, where she lost easily to Maria Kirilenko. This time, she'll face qualifed Polona Hercog, who upset Dominicka Cibulkova in the other semi final.
*
"It's Polona's first week on tour and she's in a final. That's amazing. She has so much talent already. I just hope my experience, as little as it is, can pull to a victory tomorrow. I really, really want to win my first title."
*
Williams and Hercog play for the championship tomorrow.
