Press meeting with 400 people held in Copenhagen today.

I hoping Anna Chakvetadze she played so great here and made a great run. and I always like too see her and Caroline Wozniacki play against each other. I think Klára Zakopalová might be here to defend here point though

The Tournament was moved, so Caro also can play in Baastad, Sweden, but I also think it was a bad move, just to be able play her fave MM Tourny...

They hope that the best players been in Europe after RG, they can get some good players playing here... They all can't play in Birmingham.

Oh come on  the linejudges in that tournament were certainly a hot mess but they weren't trying to make Caro win. Caro bettered both players.

They were not all in her favor :weirdo: I remember her getting mad at them. They obviously can't do that. The linesman don't even care who wins and there are WTA supervisors who obviously wouldn't have put up with that.

Yes, I'd guess 6 weeks before the start is a good time to announce the main draw (that's what they did last year).

I'm curious abot the Danish wild cards. Last year 4 Danish players got wild cards: Ejdesgaard (MD), Barbat, Grage, and Melsted (Q). But I'm not sure how many wild cards will be given to Danish players this year, or who'll get them?

Mai Grage has stopped playing pro tennis, so I'm not sure she'd get one. She did play Fed Cup a couple of months ago, so I guess she deserves a wc at Copenhagen. She also won the Danish championship just two weeks ago and seems in extraordinary form (her first singles championship title). She's probably the best Danish player at the moment (besides Caro, obviously), but I'm not sure if that's enough reason to give her a wild card?

Malou Ejdesgaard has not played a match for 6 months now because of a knee injury (ligament tear), and I don't know why she'd get a wc for a WTA tournament if she hasn't even been able to play a club match before that? Don't get me wrong: I wouldn't mind seeing her in the Copenhagen tournament, but she must be fit.

Karen Barbat has been bothered by some sort of minor elbow injury during the entire season of 2011, but she has kept playing a lot and will certainly get a wild card.

Cecilie Melsted should also get one. She was quite good at the Danish championships two weeks ago, and almost eliminated multiple singles champion Hanne Skak Jensen in the semi final (Hanne Skak Jensen is a former WTA player, and still very, very good by Danish standards - in fact almost unbeatable on Danish soil!).

To sum it up: Barbat, Melsted are likely to get a wild card. Grage deserves it based on her results, but not when considering her (lack of) international ambitions. I wouldn't mind seeing her at Copenhagen though. Caro's bff Ejdesgaard will definetely get a wc if she's able to play, but I'm afraid it's not looking too good atm. I'd love to see her again though :) It's really difficult to imagine anyone else besides those four getting a wild card! Martine Ditlev, for instance, is one of the most ambitious girls in Denmark at the moment, and she has a very high ranking in Denmark - in fact just above Melsted (although that ranking can be a bit misleading; she's definetely not better than Melsted) - but Martine is still just 14 years of age, and she's still being bageled when she plays someone like Mai Grage, so a WTA tournament is way too early for her. The same can be said about other Danish talents; they're still too young to play at a WTA event.

What about Hanne-Skak?

this event should be on clay in April, not during the grass court season.

Wozniacki has to play this but is not playing Eastbourne/Den Bosch so no grass court prep for her before Wimbledon this year.

Jorn
May 22nd, 2011, 01:29 PM
Its too early play in April outdoors and we don't have any places outdoor with big stadiums for the crowd. But I agree its a bad move it here in the grass season, just so Caro also can play in WTA in Baastad.

What's really wrong, IMO, is the absurd WTA restrictions for top 10 players. It's absolutely ridiculous that Wozniacki can't play both Bastad and Copenhagen if they're in the same half of the season. Hopefully WTA will change their rules regarding this in a year or two...

But yeah, June and hard court is really awkward. Maybe the Copenhagen tournament will get a more suitable place on the calender next season?

There's no info out yet about Wild cards...

Jorn
Jun 1st, 2011, 12:58 PM
Btw, Ithink this Qualie List is 3 weeks old, so there will be updates...

As we don't have many pros in Denmark, maybe players not from Denmark will get a Wild card...

Karen Barbat should get a wildcard. She just won an ITF.

Which ITF?
On Antarktis, where she had to play against Penguins without rackets?:oh:

Jorn
Jun 2nd, 2011, 10:17 AM
Karen won a "big" 10K Tournament. :)

But as she play there in Greece again this week, she may have a WC in Copenhagen or she won't play what is rare...

But ithink she should play in the Qualies to be able to win a match!

Jorn
Jun 2nd, 2011, 10:49 AM
But i don't know who get the Quali Wild Cards because we don't have many pros in Denmark. we have.

WTA #1) Caroline
about #534) Karen Barbat
about #950?) Malou Ejdesgaard
Junior Cecilie Melsted who played in Qualies last year.

Maybe Mai Grage will come back playing...

Hanne Skak Jensen is still quite good by Danish standards, but she doesn't play pro tennis anymore.

I believe they gave a QWC to Ellen Allgurin last year. Maybe she'll get one again. We also have some good juniors: Melsted, Ditlev and Alipieva. Hopefully at least one of them will get a QWC.

We got a dane in Qualies... ;)

Sakkari's mother was a GOAT though, best Greek before Eleni came :)

@Nick: The other set was 6-2. Maybe it wasn't that bad of a loss, as Sakkari is a good player, but someone who wants a MD WC for a WTA event really should beat unranked 15 year-olds

Jorn
Jun 3rd, 2011, 10:38 AM
Who said Karen want a MDWC? (Even I don't see others from DEN get it...)

Maybe she lost in Greece because she got a Quali wc... But now i don't think we get info before the Q-Draw should be out in 6-7 hours...

Last 2 Main Draw WC.

Julia Boserup (DEN/USA) :)

Karolina Pliskova (CZE)

Last year Karolina's sis got wc, this year Karolina got one...

The reason was she's a big talent...

But they need better rankt players, No. 257, 295 and #812 got the MD WC's.

We also have some good juniors: Melsted, Ditlev and Alipieva. Hopefully at least one of them will get a QWC.
Simone Alipieva is not a Danish citizen though as she still has a Bulgarian passport. So noone knows for sure if she will ever represent Denmark or will keep representing Bulgaria where her parents were bron: http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?p=19539695#post19539695
Not that it prevents her from getting a WC though.

http://www.tennis.dk/Nyheder/2011/Maj/Talenter%20klar%20til%20EM%20Hold.aspx
