We are waiting for you Serena :worship:

Maybe she'll play a warmup to avoid being unranked

Serena Williams, who hasn’t competed since winning Wimbledon because of a foot injury, says she’s aiming to return to the tour in mid-May. Williams, who had her walking boot taken off sometime in the past few weeks, hopes to be back on the practice court soon. "My foot feels good and I'm starting to train right away, and I intend to be back for the French Open," Williams told the New York Post.

The French Open is basically a warm up for Wimbledon for her this year (if she plays the French). If she gets in 3, 4, or even 5 matches that would be good for her.

Isn't there a new rule if you earn over a certain amount of points in one tournament you get a ranking anyway?

Will be great to have her back anyway :D

Ooh you are right, they got rid of the three tournament rule. I didn't know.

Number of Tournaments
Players must earn (i) ranking points in at least three (3) valid
Tournaments, or (ii) a minimum of 10 singles ranking points or 10
doubles ranking points in one (1) or more valid Tournaments, in
order to appear on the WTA Rankings.

yep, you can now have a ranking with 1 or 2 tournaments played as long as that 1 or 2 tournaments points total is over 10. so serena will have a ranking till the week after wimbledon, should she not play.

Yes there is. I can't remember what the "certain amount of points in one tournament" is but suffice to say it is less than the 2000 Serena got last year at Wimbledon. ;)

I think she just needs to show up in Germany to count as making herself available for FedCup.

She will still have a rank. Yes she does have the 2000 from WIM but she would still have 10 or so tourns on the computer (0 pointers)

Top 20 still plus as its Wimbledon they will make her seed right near top anyway.

I think all of Serena's remaining points come from after Miami - European clay (she didn't play Miami last year) and Wimbledon. She's currently ranked #12 and hasn't played in 8 and a half months. She wasn't out this long when she had her knee surgery. She's got a shit-load of point to defend in a very short period of time - not that ranking mean that much to Serena or her ability.

That is because she is easy to hate, or dislike. She is arrogant, foul mouthed, pretentious bully. She is also a big crybaby and sore loser. Tennis is better off without her.

maybe...but better than an early round Wimbledon exit. If she is indeed healthy enough to return for Roland Garros...she should do it. Even if it means an early exit. Better to get that out of her system there (on her weakest surface) than waiting for Wimbledon (one of her strongest surfaces) where an early exit would really give her critics some bashing material.

I would love to see Serena try and play a warmup just before the French, but whatever works best for her, as long as she is 100% healthy and ready to go, because ultimately that's what matters. She's the kind of player that even if she's coming off a long layoff, more times than not, she can play her way into form, especially if it's at a Slam. So all in all, I'm not worried. I'm just happy that she's out of the boot now, and getting herself into tip-top shape for her 2011 season.

I don't care about her slipping in the rankings before the French, because the lower she's seeded at the slams, the more dangerous she becomes, especially if she meets Caro, Kim or Zvonareva early on.

guyha4

how much points she has to defend on till Roland Garros?

She's asking for a first round exit. :o Please wait til Wimbledon, Serena.

That's a bit strong. Even though clay is her weakest surface, she not as weak on it as some would suggest. She's had some pretty nice results at the French, despite only winning once. And even though this would be her 1st event of the year, Serena's the type of player that can play her way into form, especially over a 2-week period at a Slam, so if I were you, I wouldn't worry. She'll be fine.

Brussels is a Premier tournament with Wozniacki, Zvonareva, Schiavone and Jankovic playing... it's not same crappy MM.

The only reason why maybe she wouldn't want to go is that it's in Belgium or something, and that's where she played the Exho that ruined her foot.

Apart from the mandatory tournaments she only has 2 0-pointers actually, and I think both of them are coming off later this year.

No loopholes needed. You just have to make yourself available for Fed Cup twice in order to be eligible for the Olympics.

Clearly Serena is sending out a message that she will not be back for Miami or Madrid, but is planning to return for Rome (a tournament she likes in one of her favourite cities) or failing that, Brussels. Red European clay is the only surface where Serena generally patronises the warm-up events. As others have said, I think this is more about a build-up for Wimbledon than Roland Garros, where she will do well to make the quarter-final place she makes in her good years. With the Australian off the agenda, her second best slam of recent years, Wimbledon will be the key to her year so she wants to be ready for that and even for Serena, it would be hard to come back and win there if she had not played a single event since the previous one.

Another good reason for Serena to do this is to build the excitement for her return. Women's tennis has taken a lot of hits recently with retirements and slumps of top players and marquee names so there is bound to be a whirlwind of media interest on Serena's return and whether she can defend Wimbledon especially. My guess is that Serena will see increased crowd support too, not just from her former supporters but from many neutral tennis fans. Being fresher than the other top players, Serena could have another psychological advantage over Kim and Caroline et al, but in the end, it will all depend on whether she is fit enough, does not reinjure herself or whether she finds that with such a long lay off, she can find that top form in time or even again.

In order to play the olympics, you have to play at least 1 Fed Cup tie or make yourself available for the team and do appearences. Serena and Venus haven't even come close to doing that. And I'm only gonna say this thing one last time:

EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION: Reguardless of what Mary Joe Fernandez does, unless she flat out says, "THE WILLIAMS SISTERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY A FED CUP TIE" then stop with the speculations. As MJF has said NUMEROUS times, if a healthy sister shows up asking to play, they will be allowed to play without a problem.
