Unfortunately Schiavone got injured in the 2nd set tiebreak, it was a great set of tennis. Then in the third, Dokic just needed to hold serve.

Yeah Fran was struggling, rolled ankle late in the second.

But well done Jelena, she did well to keep it close in the second and really played well before Fran went over. After that it was pretty much a given that Fran would lose, very classy for not retiring though. Hope she gets better soon.

Dokic's 1st top 10 (and hence top 5 as well) since beating world number 1 Kim Clijsters back in Zurich, October 2003. So quite a long time. ;)

Remarkable quite unexpected win. But clearly with this result and Paris too, Dokic is playing better than she has for many many years, keeping in mind even her AO quarterfinal was a very isolated result.

She was playing well on serve, but didn't really use her brain and take advantage of the injury. She still tried to hit a winner off every service return.

that was good tacticts cause whenever she had to be slighty bit more defensive in any rally she would lose it. The truth is she was great when Fransexa was giving her practice balls in the middle of the court to finish. She won numerous 3-balls rallies, but it's not like she was constructing anything there.

Exactly; that's the majority of the WTA, in fact. ;) Despite being tired and injured, Fran being Fran :hearts: was hanging in there, very ready to take advantage of any late choke. She didn't get it; JD served it out in style. It was a legitimate win and the 2nd set, at least, was very well-played by both at the same time. Good tennis, very fun to watch. Nice match, ladies. :hatoff:

Now get some rest and let that ankle heal, Fran! And Jelena, please take advantage of this upset and KEEP GOING TO THE END this week.

The idea that Jelena's victory was marred by Fran's injury is, to put it gently, BULLSHIT.

Fran didn't get injured until the 2nd set tiebreaker - and she got injured because Jelena punished a ball into the corner that Fran had to go very far wide for.

Until the injury, Jelena was playing clearly better in the 2nd set - she had a set point at 4-5.

All the haters must accept this: in the last month alone, Jelena has now beaten Safarova, Petrova and Schiavone - and was beating the world #5 BEFORE she got injured - an injury caused by Jelena's punishing play.

You seem to have forgotten that she beat Wozniaki and Kleybanova to reach the QF of the AO in 2009 - and almost took out the then-#1 Dinara Safina in 3 tough sets.

She also just won 5 straight matches -- including beating Safarova and Petrova indoors, at a tournament where both have been finalists -- to reach the QF.

Nice try, though.

Woah. Was not expecting this whatsoever when I saw the draw. Hope the injury isn't too severe as Fran is such a breathe of fresh air and she fights for every single point and never gives up. That's why this win is pretty huge for Jelena because even though Schiavone was injured in that final set she is hardly the type of person to hand over the match and makes her opponents win it.

On a side note, only 30 points for beating a top 5 player. Hopefully she now takes advantage of her draw and gains more points!!

I Imagine playing Schiavone injured has the potential to be more difficult than when playing her fully healthy. For one, Jelena had to get over the mental battle of playing and injured opponent, and Francesca would've been doing everything in her power to either stay on the attack, or throw huge amounts of junk at Dokic in an attempt to unsettle her. Overall, injured or not, Dokic still won the second set against a healthy opponent and held it together.

Some people here are impossible. Winning over an injured opponent is difficult, and by the sounds of it, Schiavone didn't just roll over and hand Jelena the match. Dokic won, Schiavone didn't. Facts are, Dokic should be applauded for putting herself in a position where from she could win the second set, and eventually the match.

How the fuck can she be beating the world #5 when trailing a set? Chances are if Fran didn't get injured in the TB, she would have won in two.

She'd had a set point at 5-4* and was clearly playing the better tennis at the point Fran got injured, she was already up in the tiebreak too. Not to say she was literally "in front", but she definitely had the momentum.

Great win for Jelena!! Her first top 5 win in how many years???
2011 is shaping up as a very promising year :bounce: :bounce:

First top 5 win since Zürich 2003 when she beat world # 1 Clijsters.

Amazing! Stunning result!

How the fuck can she be beating the world #5 when trailing a set? Chances are if Fran didn't get injured in the TB, she would have won in two.

You obviously didn't watch the match - which apparently doesn't stop you from commenting on it and making bold predictions about it: about a match you didn't see.

Jelena was clearly the superior player in the 2nd set. She was holding easily and Fran was struggling to hold. Jelena had a set point at 4-5 on Fran's serve. In the tie-break, when Fran got injured, Jelena ALREADY was leading 3-1. Fran got injured because Jelena bashed a ball out wide into the corner that Fran couldn't get.

In short, she was out-playing Fran in the second set BEFORE the injury. Your claim - "if Fran didn't get injured in the TB, she would have won in two" - is totally ignorant, negated by the facts, and wouldn't be issued by anyone who actually saw the match.

Other than that, though, your comment was really insightful.:lol:

Who gives a fuck? Even if you lead 5-0 but trail by a set, you can't claim to be beating the other player. :tape:

what a fantastic win, Jelena!:eek::hearts::woohoo:

Beating a Top 5 player!:speakles: Despite serving 15 DFs!

Finally some luck for Jelena. She was so unlucky vs Dementieva at FO.

Now don`t crash out in next round, Jelena!:tape:

Why is everyone saying that Schiavone would have won the tie-break without her injury? It's not like she's the tie-break queen. And Jelena was playing far better than in the 1st set.

Once again: Schiavone got injured at the end of the tie-break. The score was 5:1 or 6:1 for Jelena. Jelena would have won the tie-break anyway, she needed just one more point at that time.

But Jelena did beat Franny. Get over it.
