View Full Version : Which Grand Slam crowd would you NOW consider the best?

I know this question has been asked a fair few times, but given the out of character behaviour of generally well behaved crowds such as the Australian Open and Wimbledon spectators over the last 12 months, who would you now list as the best crowd?

For instance, this year at the Australian Open, the crowd was uncharacteristically rude to many players, imitating grunts and booing injured players.

At Wimbledon, the crowd booed five time champion Venus Williams when she was accidentally late to her fourth round match, which was acutally a slip up from the tournament.

The French Open crowd doesn't need any introduction, but I don't think they did anything out of the ordinary at the 2010 FO,

Not really sure about the USO, but they generally don't cheer heavily for their home favourites like other slam crowds.

Thoughts?

For awhile, most people, considers the Aussie the best crowd.
I must say Federer helped in that effort by constantlty referring to Aussie Open as "The Happy Slam" because of the crowd happy disposition toward every players.

But there was a rude awakening this year among the people who held that opinion.
It is till possible that the sentiment is till out there, but my opinion is its currency has dimisnihsed considerably after this year.

Wimbledon is my favorite!

I like polite crowds too, but there will always be isolated incidents...its not like the fans KNEW it was the tournaments fault that Venus was late.

I do like the French; the crowds actually know their tennis very well (same goes with Wimbledon), and don't put up with bullshit. Although, they are a bit too fickle...

I personally think the Roland Garros crowd is insane. They don't like players pointing to ball marks for balls that landed out but weren't called out by the lines person. What do they expect the players to do? Just stand there, knowing that the ball was out and that they should've won the point and let the match go on, because the CROWD don't like it?

as far as pointing to marks go at RG, the overseer or whatever sometimes looks at the wrong mark, thus hurting my fave player :o

Always a great atmosphere there, especially at night!!

The most boring one is Wimbledon's

USO-good crowd in general, especially at night

Wimbledon I consider the best...AO can get waaayyyyy too rowdy from what I've seen televised.
RG is by far the worst and USO is inbetween. It's the only one i've attended but I've been there several times and they're usually great except for when the JBlock would appear.

RG is by far the worst. Especially for the women. Some of the attendance they have for women :help:

I used to think the Australian but something was up with the crowds this year. I guess a bad crop.

Like someone else has said, nothing beats a night session at the US Open. So many epic matches during the evening, most likely because of the crowd's incredible electricity.

The Wimbledon crowds are nice but they are a tad on the boring side.

I really don't believe, in my honest opinion, that the French crowd is educated. An educated crowd would respect the players and the effort they put in on court. The French crowd simply don't do that, sometimes not even to the top players.

Thsi notion is old notion the mark of education is shown through arrogance, contempt for and misplaced impatience for the "other"

1.Us Open crowd - these peopole are amazing ! Night sessions shows that America love tennis and long matches !
2.Aussie crowd

I think that crowd in London is little bit boring , but very elegant .English treat Wimbledon very seriously and their behaviour is calm and elegant

French crowd's so mean ! It is very funny when they boo players ...

Australia has some of the best crowd involvement and some of the best matches for the women - consistently for the past 5-10 years now, especially relative to the other slams.

Wimbledon certainly has the most civilised and generally supportive crowds, crowds that never overstep their role as spectators to become "sub-umpires and linesmen". Which I appreciate while watching, and while there. Wimbledon also has its great share of matches, although 2010 was a bit of a let down for the men and women.

I'd say those two, then the USO is always fun, Roland Garros

As for cheering the players and for making a great atmosphere in matches I think The Australian Open crowd is the best . They fill out stadiums whenever there is a classic match in contrary of the Wimbledon crowd where Serena and Maria played a match last year at and many stands were empty :)

i feel the same way. i read an article about this old person in korea who would push people around like on subways/trains and make people get out of their seats for her, otherwise she'd attack them... just because you're old doesn't mean you can do whatever you want  (although it would be nice if people would just naturally give up a seat for an old person. i'm not saying i have anything against that.)

What was the story behind it?

The guy was shouting insults at the players all night, he wouldn't shut the fuck up for longer than 5 seconds. he had one of those voices that just makes you want to throw a brick at a baby. that lady was a bitch too, but i'm pretty sure 95% of the people in that section wanted to beat the shit out of the guy, so they both got what they deserved.

the guy sitting in between them was the guy's friend. he got up and left after it got heated. even his friend didn't bother defending him.

The French are the best. They are opinionated (very) and don't hesitate to get involved, and most of the time, they determine the outcome. :worship: Plus, they always chose the right people to root against: Martina, Maria, Serena, Nadull. And on top, they also love the best ones: Roger, Justine, Steffi. :worship:

Wimbledon sucks, especially when a British player gets involved.

Sorry, but nothing beats night sessions on hardcourts. AO, USO and even Miami night sessions are just.... Wimbledon & RG would have far more epic matches, if they got lightning. Rezai-Petrova, Fognini-Monfils were both EPIC matches, but thehy both had to end on a very pathetic note the next day, with hardly the quality of the previous day.
