View Full Version : If you could pick one, who would you 'put" back into the top 20??

There are obviously alot good players on tour who talent-wise should be in the top 20 but because of injuries, fitness, confidence, belief they aren't.....so if you could put one player back into the top 20(kind of giving the a second chance in essence),who do you think would benefit most from it(ie push top players, benefit from a higher seeding, win titles and make things interesting).
I for one would love for Anna Chakevtadze to have more chance in the top 20,she is playing much better tennis nowadays but seems to get injuried just when she could be due for a nice run(last fall, Dubai). If she could keep her head straight i feel her game could def trouble majority of the top 20 and given the current state of womens tennis she could even make a few deep runs at majors and push close to the top 10.

I think it would also be interesting if Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Dinara Safina were in the top 20(though with the latter i dont think she is ready for that level). Minus a hiccup at her last 2 slams(losing 75 in the 3rd at both the USO and OZ),Beth has been having a top 20-30 players resume since last summer: Qualifies for Montreal, wins her 1st round and lead Clijsters 64 41; Qualified and won her first round in New Haven,2rd at the Open,FINAL in Quebec;FINAL in her very next tour event Brisbane, brainfart in OZ and then Semifinal in Paris Indoors.....so she had made atleast the SF in 3 of her last 4 events as a player outside the top 50!

The OP read my mind. :hearts: I'd put Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the top 20. Not just because I love her but she's really been stepping up her game and mind set over the past couple of months. It seems her match vs Kim in Montreal was what did the trick. She's still having laspes in matches but overall she's improved so much that I think she could even crack the top 20 on her own this year. She's already been climbing up the rankings slowly but surely and it's looking more and more that she'll accomplish her goal to be seeded for a slam. Also, this will be the year she not only gets her first top 10 win but I think she'll take at least 5 this year.

After reading these posts I feel like putting at least 20 players there. Geez it´s too hard to pick one.

1. Hantuchova (not best deserved but I want her to do well plus she is Slovak)
2. Safina is top 5 material
3. Lisicki - top 5 is she is back one day without injuries etc.
...Dementieva should come back
...there are two many

this is probably the easiest tennis question for me: little jie. :(

right now i just want her to get back into the top 30... that might take her god knows how long, considering how she said she won't be fully recovered for about 3 months.

Anna Kournikova (it's never too late for a comeback!)
Ana Ivanovic (currently #21)
Dominika Cibulkova
Tatiana Golovin
Anna Chakvetadze
Daniela Hantuchova
Jelena Dokic

I also want to see Maria Sharapova back in the Top 10

the funny thing is that i'm not even sure jie would "benefit" from getting her ranking back; she has a habit of playing her best when no one expects anything from her. let's see... first WC to make a SF at wimbledon. her first win over ANY top 10 player (just so happened to be no. 1 :hearts:) came at wimbledon, when she was ranked 133 and having then recently dropped out of the top 200. then came AO 2010, where she was once again i would assume off the radar. not seeded. went to the SF again. and she did this with a bad wrist (she injured it in the 2009 AO R4, so i suppose she already showed she could do well there. she held off surgery for a long time)

she works her way up to no. 15 in the world only to crash out against MLDB in R2 of the FO. i think it's the pressure; jie even said that at that point she was constantly thinking about her ranking, trying to reach a career high. MLDB also did a lot of grunting, which bothered jie.

anyway, a quote that is the epitome of jie: "I really like playing tennis and I was ambitious," she told CNN about her youth. "If you say I can't make it, I'll prove to you that I can." :)

Daniela Hantuchova in her current form would be in top 20 soon so I am not gonna choose her.

I would go for Dinara whom has been going down down and further down these days. It is always sad to see someone who has been No.1 has to play against the top seed in the very first round, or even worse than that, play in the qualifying matches to play in a tournament which a couple of years earlier would have been its top seed.

Whatever happened to that blond Russian chick who always hung out with her mom? I kind of miss her.

There was another Russian gal I kind of liked, too. She was a little shorter than the first one, and brunette instead of blond. As I recall, she also had something of a temper.

hm well before she got her injury she actually had decent results as in Stanford title, SF at Eastbourne and Quebec as well as 4r at the French where she lost to Serena. And to says he was never in it, she made it to no.21, pretty damn close. I remember when she played in one of her matches at Wimbledon against Jankovic (stunning match) Lindsay Davenport said that she actually had been a very exciting player and didn't understand why her ranking had dropped so much. Her ranking also started to drop off before her injury so . It's just sad though because I think that if she would've continued to improve her game and fitness she couldve made the top 15 close to top 10.

Aleks' 2010 year was nowhere as good as 2008 or 2009, and her injury happened in Stanford against Oudin. That's 6 months of decent result, but nothing good enough to be top 20. Losses against Alves, Riske, Watson, Flipkens and Cornet don't get you close to top 15.

She always was a very up-and-down player, and when her game is on, she is a joy to watch. That match against Jankovic is one example. But she never showed any signs of consistency, even in her best years.

And Aleks was actually called Baby-Lindsay when she was growing up here in Canada, something Lindsay actually knew about as she played against her in Quebec City. The depth and heaviness of her strokes indeed remind of Linds'.

All I'm saying is, Aleks should definitely be ranked higher, but I really can't see how, when compared to players like Hantuchova, Safina, Chakvetadze, etc, you think she should be ranked top 20 while she never has been.
