Pretty bad perfomance from Caroline today, couldn't get any rhythm, wind didn't help. Serve was MIA and she just was missing easy shots. Surprised she kept it that close, blowing all those 40-0/15 game leads.
Now get some rest and be ready for IW.

Never in doubt. Wozniacki played really well but Bepa was still too good for her and exposed her weaknesses. I'm sure after this match whereby Bepa displayed an aggressive style of tennis, noone will label her as a pusher anymore. As all of you saw today, the real pusher is Pushniacki. Playing aggressively like how Bepa did today is the way to beat such disgusting pushers.

:spit: Zvonareva doing to Caro Woz what Caro Woz does to others... some wicked defenses by the russian...

Once again this shows how overrated Caro Woz is... as soon as you can move the ball around and contain her defenses all this in minimum UEs she's clueless...

...and people were jumping all around with 35-7 against weaponless Pennetta. :haha:

Players like JJ or Vera should beat Woz in 90% of their matches. They can handle her physically and have much more game. The only reason Vera doesn't beat Woz more often is the mental side.Tonight she stayed calm, served well under pressure and mixed it up perfectly.Great week for her.

Cool. I really didn't expect that at all. But very deserved and good to see. The conditions it must be said really suited Vera who over the years has proven herself to be an outstanding player at handling the wind.

Big win for Vera and definately good for the game. Vera is world number 3 and it doesn't do the game much good when the world number 3 doesn't have the clout of holding even one title. And another win over world number 1 is also a good feather in her cap. Hopefully this will give Vera a lot of confidence and she can begin to close the gap that has opened up between her and the top 2.

This time I was reallz sure Vera was going to win. She played really well coming into this final. And mentally strong - her wins over Hantuchova and Jankovic were a great mental test.

She knew what she had to do in order to win today, she stayed calm.

Caro on the other her didnt play well, but Vera didnt give her many chances to take on

Congrats to Vera. She was good today but not scary good. Her serve for instance wasn't too sharp, but she read Caro well. I still think Caro could have won if she had played her best but she had trouble handling the wind so she reverted to more the past Caro than the one we saw the last two days. It's not an excuse, though. Wind is a natural part of tennis and if you have chosen a style of play that's vulnerable to wind you just have to learn to deal with it 'cause it's not going away!

Congratulation to Vera for getting the monkey off her back. She handled the conditions much better than Caro and found some amazing depth, when playing into the wind. Unfortunately Caro appeared to get a little irritated at the conditions, but when your CC FH for the Nth time is take wide by the wind, maybe you should take note. So Caro baby, you really only have yourself to blame. Sorry. Still love you though

I shall now exit this thread and let the usual suspect post their 10 pages of insults against Caroline.

It was not only the wind Vera handled better but as a whole a very smart play. She insisted on playing to Caro's forehand and it broke down.

Nice win for Vera. This match reminded me of their US Open semi final, it just seemed like nothing that Caroline did was bothering Vera at all. Caroline had some games on her serve where she was up 40-0 and struggled to hold and some games where she was up 0-40/15-40 on Vera's serve and she could not take advantage. Vera was great mentally today.

I hope that Caroline doesn't let this bother her and that she can keep playing like she did against Pennetta and Bartoli.

Wow! :hearts:

Vera didn't choke!

I thought she was gonna choke after that bad call, but she really stayed composed, not just today, but throughout the whole tournament.

Today we've seen the difference - of course Caro played her worst match of the tournament, but she had a lot of chances to make a winner, and yet she would just continue hitting left-right-left without any risk, but unlike Bartoli or some others, Vera is much better mover and can switch from defense to attack without problem. These dropshots worked well too...

Caro, I guess it was time for you to lose in a final

Today she played her pusher game, and she was punished. She simply needed to risk a bit more, but I'm sure she's gonna figure it out soon.

Overall, I thought it was a very good week tennis-wise. Caro showed that she can play like #1, Vera showed that she is certainly not a choker she used to be, Jelena is coming back match by match, Daniela raised her game, Bartoli played like #1 too ...

She really handled the windy conditions better than Caro today. Also didn't let that appalling line call get to her.Vera was magnificent it so fantastic so see her give Caroline a hiding. Even an outrageous line call to rob her of match point did not upset her. I do not think many other players would have handled that situation as well as her. The ball was more than 50% on the line and she just carried on without getting upset. I see no reason why Vera cannot get to number but it will depend on Caroline not doing as well as she has. That line judge should be sacked and why cannot the umpire overrule on the far line when it was so clearly in. If Vera had lost this match she would have been robbed.

What's interesting is that Vera was *getting* upset but managed to put it away again - when she used up her last challenge, she was clearly getting worked up by the expression on her face, but managed to calm back down and refocus - something she doesn't often do.

Last time Daniela defeats Vera to her pattaya title for her first title in nearly four years, now she defeats her to her first title in over a year in Doha, solid revenge from Vera! Wozniacki still showing her vulnerability and (even though it's a small one due to the lack of smart players nowadays) it will stay one because of how she plays. Wasn't expecting her to lose but oh well, I was gladly proven wrong. I'm also fucking sick of commentators comparing Wozniacki to Sharapova, they are actually entire opposites apart from the fact that they're both blonde.

Great play from Zvonareva. :yeah: Very deservedly won, congrats.

Well done Bepa , bad luck Woz, Tea must be a little weak, he did congratulate Bepa (sort of) but might admit the huge gulf between Caro and Bepa is a wee bit smaller than he has been preaching:), Anyway looked a good match and Bepa kept her demons under control, still posts saying Bepa didn't win it, Caro lost it, all makes good reading I suppose. Still love Caro's ability to return what should have been a winner from an off balance position right onto the line and often win the point from there.

That was important for Vera. She wasnt holding a title, and its only her 2nd Premier. She beat Wozniacki, Jankovic along the way.
Thats how she got to 2 slam finals.
Caro was making things look too easy, until today. But I still think she will continue on as #1 and win majors.

We are on the same side regarding Woz.

But Woz wasn't on today, but that could also be attributed to Vera being on. It was a demolition job even with 6-4, 6-4. I guess we can take something from that.

But there is no getting away from the fact Vera utterly deserved this win.

Anyone who really watched Caro's matches this week would clearly know that Woz's game was not truly "on" today but Vera did do enough to win easily and totally deserved too.

One positive as a Caro fan could be that losing this final like this should definitely remind Caro and her team that she should not rest on her laurels from her Dubai title and keep plugging away with the training so she can arrive at Indian Wells just as focused as ever.

Regardless...great week for both Vera and Caro. Looking forward to where this rivalry goes next:)

Eh, this is exactly why these calls for Wozniacki to be more aggressive are so, so wrong.

There was no way "Aggressive Woz" was going to win that unless Vera fell apart. Not only is her technique just not good enough to consistently get the ball past a player who moves as well and hits as deep as Vera, but the slowness of her ball in her regular game actually helps her movement so much and gives her more time to recover and get into the perfect position to defend. She's not actually that quick, and it meant Vera found it much easier to get the ball past her.

It's fine for her to up aggresson against the likes of Pennetta. But she just had no chance against a player of Vera's quality who is just a so much better offensive player than her. More power, much sturdier technique, better angles, and just a far superior offensive mindset and shot selection. While Pennetta and co were feeding Wozniacki with the perfect balls (barely clearing the service line) to attack, Vera was hitting with much more depth, angle and even the occasional high ball or slice which, time and time again, completely exposed Wozniacki's countless technical hitches on both sides.

Wozniacki fans keep on saying that she just wasn't "on" today. But the reason she wasn't "on" was because the player on the other side wasn't letting her. She's better off playing her usual retrieving game with a load of junk.

But Caro wasn't "on" today. That's just the truth. Vera was good but she wasn't playing an unstoppable game. Woz had plenty of opportunities to step into the ball more and flatten out her shots for winners. She played tentatively. She could've easily made this match at least more interesting by hitting her shots like she has been most of this week. But she was playing like she didn't trust herself....i.e. her game wasn't "on"

No she wasn't playing unstoppable. But in her earlier matches, Wozniacki had it much easier. She played very well and was aggressive, but with no resistance at all. Today Vera was completely different. When Vera wasn't bossing the points, she was putting the ball in difficult and varying positions on the court. And when Wozniacki did try to be aggressive, as you said, she either ended up backing out and being tentative, playing the wrong shot, or her technique would completely let her down. But today was completely different to earlier on in the week when opponents were inviting her to be aggresive.

She's better off behind the baseline, doing what she usually does than trying to play like an aggressive counterpuncher.

I do see what your saying but all I'm trying to say is Caro has been playing more aggressively recently. It seemed to work fine against Kuznetsova, Petrova and Bartoli (all pretty aggressive players) I believe that if Wozniacki had come out of the gates playing like she has been this past week and a half...she would have had more success against Vera. It did not seem like she was feeling her game today. Movement wasn't as strong, mind wasn't as clear and shots weren't as penetrating. Vera is a higher quality opponent for Caro so it was important for her to come out playing strong. She didn't in my opinion and that contributed to her loss.

But just because she didn't play as strong today doesn't send up a red flag to me that she needs to stay behind the baseline and retrieve until her opponents make errors. It would be best if she continues to practice coming in and finishing off volleys and developing her aggresive/defensive game like she's been doing recently.

I agree with the second statement but not the first.

I think Wozniacki realises that with her usual game she'll eventually win a Slam, but if she adds more elements to her game she could actually dominate. She's going to get a bit worse before she gets better at learning to harness her aggression, but it will be worth it. A Tier 2 final is a perfect learning opportunity for this purpose - a big enough event to try out new things under pressure, but not so important that you should stick to the tennis you're most comfortable with.

i was really pissed that Vera missed so many chance lately to win something, finally she did hold together herself. :)

 for Caroline, too bad she couldn't keep up the performance all week, maybe conditions affected her little bit. Still was pretty close, she shouldn't lose games from 40-0... this way pressure was on her in many times, not on Vera. Hope she (and her daddy) won't blame the more aggresive attacking game for the loss, she needs time for the transition, but this was a good live test for now.

Wind played a HUGE part in this! Vera seems to be so calm in the wind, she's played some really solid matches in the wind. Caro on the other hand had NO CLUE, bad timing, really bad timing. Serve was shocking, just really disappointing. But she goes into IW and Miami with a great record behind her, to be honest I didn't want her going in there on a winning streak; more likely to lose. She's got the crap out of her system, now to get serious. On the other hand IW is really windy too we'll see.

What did please me was that even when Caro was losing, she still stayed aggressive, so many more errors but good to see she's committed to playing with this new style.

It wasn't THAT much wind though mind you, just enough to upset Caro's timing, she was even more vulnerable seeing as she's trying to change the way she plays.

Are you indicating that Caroline doesn't play well on Windy conditions ?

Well just to remind you Indian Wells is one of the most windiest tournaments played on WTA and Caro made the final there last year so  yeah I think she sucks on Windy conditions .

The wind is no excuse. You cant start by being broken twice.
This match was close. Caro had a break point and Vera hit the edge of the line, or it was 4-4 in the 1st. But Caro made too many errors. She's trying to force the issue more, and she has to be better than today.

Zvonareva played 3 great matches in a row - nothing less than a towering achievement by today's standards (and add to that the Danka d. Shriekarenka match, which was also fairly good, and it's undeniable that this was a quite good week of tennis).

Of course the (slightly) windy conditions helped, but Zvonareva played a near flawless match in terms of tactics, shot selection and match play. She knew when to rally patiently and when to be aggressive and go for her shots. And she was much steadier under pressure than Wozniacka (which was reminiscent of their USO match), and dealt with all the junk and framed moonballs that are a side effect of Wozniacka's game with a good rate of success. Zvonareva got lucky on that long deuce game early in the 2nd set in which she blew a ton of BPs by playing passively only to break in the end just the same (or maybe she was just toying with Wozniacka there, intentionally making the game drag before taking it just to break her opponent's spirit, like prime Jankovic used to do?), but other than that she played clutch and managed to set up and win quick points (rather than letting herself get dragged into endless rallies on every decisice point) when required. She didn't serve as well as she had done against Jankovic, but well enough to do the business (and expose Wozniacka's poor return game).

Judging by what I saw of her QF, SF and final matches this week, Wozniacka was hitting a bigger, heavier ball than ever before, and being genuinely aggressive in patches. Yet she wasn't leaking that many random errors (granted, that is due in no small part to her shot placement remaining extremely conservative). So I'd say that the predictions, made by myself and many other h8t0rz in here, that if Wozniacka attempted to play a more aggressive game she'd bury herself in errors due to her crassly rudimentary technique, are turning out wrong.

She did get pwned nearly every time she went to the net today, which was good to see.

I don't think Wozniacka played all that differently from the way she had done in the QF and the SF - yet her winner count was way lower. This was due on the one hand to the consistent depth and accuracy of Zvonareva's shots, even those hit while on the defensive, which didn't give Wozniacka as many easy putaways as Pennetta and Bartoli did, and on the other to Zvonareva's movement, footwork and defensive skills, with allowed her to keep herself in the sort of midpaced rallies that are Wozniacka's trade for as long as required until getting the right ball to counterattack. Bottom line hitting through slow players such as Pennetta and Bartoli (one of the worst, most awkward movers in her ranking range) is one thing, hitting through Zvonareva quite another.

And she was much steadier under pressure than Wozniacka (which was reminiscent of their USO match)That USO match was windy if you remember. Same thing today in Doha also (it was windy enough that Vera put on that long-sleeve top on top of her skin baring skirt). That's why I'm not (yet) convinced that Vera can beat Caro at will just by maintaining her composure and playing her more versatile game to the best of her ability. The be convinced of that I need to see Vera do this to Caro in calm conditions. I'm sure that opportunity will arise in the near future since both are currently the top of the bill fulltime players out there

If Caro would have broken Vera for 4-4 or 5-5, then won in 3, everyone would have blamed Vera.
So she deserves credit for serving out a final against a player who wins a lot of titles.

Vera played as well as at USO, tactically and mentally. She hit the ball actually better at that USO SF.

Vera, Sam and Kim will should always be difficult opponents for Caro. Their games are efficient against her.

Definitely a disappointing result for Caro after absolutely dominating in her Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches, but I'm happy to see Vera win a title again after going more than year without one. And Caro just won Dubai anyway, so she'll probably continue to take a lot of confidence from that. Hopefully both of them can kick some major ass at Indian Wells, Miami and the French Open :)

i can't explain this, maybe wozniacki was tired of 2 full weeks of tennis, but she just destroyed pennetta and bartoli while zvonareva fight hard vs hantuchova and jankovic! zvonareva wasn't playing particularly good either, i think she would have lost to pennetta who was just streamrolled by wozniacki who lost to vera, tennis is strange

Zvonareva def. Wozniacki & Indian linesman 6-4 6-4. :worship:

That was an awful call in set 2 game 9. To make matters worse Push won game 9. However,in the end truth and justice was served. For a moment it made me think back to Sweden last year when the refs took the game right out of Georges hands with the crown in the hands of Push. I am happy Vera was resilient, while Georges can't beat anybody these day.

I dont think you can assume Vera was at her peak against Dani because Vera had a bad loss to Alisa between those 2 matches.
I think Vera stepped up this final. Maybe less pressure because she was a huge underdog, maybe because she knew how important winning a final was.
Vera was at her best this whole match. Watch the 1st point, watch the last point. She was on all match

Honestly, it actually looked like Vera's form was slowly fading. She was so passive in Pattaya and Dubai and it carried over into Doha. Against Hantuchova, easily one of the slowest players on tour, she was just hitting the ball straight down the middle without doing anything. But she toughed out the win and I think that helped her confidence a lot. She was much more aggressive vs JJ and though she sprayed a lot of errors at times, another tight win further helped her confidence. All that confidence culminated in a great played final yesterday.

Finally a well-played final from her. You have to hope that this will give her confidence to play most of them like that from now on.

Well yeah, I think I phrased that wrong. Developing an offensive game is good, but when she plays a player of Vera's level playing even decent tennis, the only thing her quicker shots are doing is giving players more speed to work with (compared to the usual no-pace junk) and making it easier to get the ball past her. IMO.
