Singles Results, First Round Top Half

Bianka Harlow def. [1]Ruflina Taliamanosoko 7/5, 7/6(6)
Bianka is quite consistent and defeats the top seed in Monterrey to continue her venture towards her first tour level title in 2011.

Candela Sanchez def. [8]Sabine Graf 2/6, 7/5, 6/3
Candy upended Sabine, who has now dropped out of the top 20 and looks to be in a slump.

[Q]Samantha Soren def. [7]Marteena Huubere 6/3, 6/4
The third match in a row where the long time veteran was taken out, but Sam is not a newbie. She showed her skills today in a straight set win.

[3]Siri Cornetsson def. [WC]Rita Cebolla 6/3, 6/4
Rita was so excited to play here in the main draw, but couldn't muster much of a defense against a focused Siri.

Lindsay Galbraith shocks Harper, Wins first MD Tour match.

In a stunning upset today, Lindsay Galbraith of Great Britain stunned Harper in a match that was filled with ups and downs. Monterry has proven to be a good surface for Galbraith to hone her skills as a deaf tennis player on. Lindsay really liked that she was able to see the ball easily, and the crowd was not at all distracting for her today. The good news for Galbraith was that Harper didn’t try to mix it up enough, which has been a major problem thus far for Galbraith on the tour. It remains to be seen if Galbraith can continue her dream run in Monterry against a fellow unseeded player.

Interviewer:
Wow, fantastic work out there today. What are the biggest challenges of being Deaf?

Interpreter Signs to Lindsay

Lindsay Signs:
I absolutely HATE going to loud restaurants or loud places. I really love to socialize with other people, but its going to have to be in a 1 on 1 environment. I mean, take a look at Alijah, my best friend on the tour, she has taken time to learn sign language and actually understand what it means to be deaf. Other players still try to tell me good game or give me a tip….at the end of a match..and they just forget that I’m deaf. It can be frustrating to be a deaf person in a hearing world, because there are so many misconceptions about what being deaf is.

Interviewer:
Fantastic Answer. Did you ever think about getting implanted?

Interpreter signs Question to Lindsay:

Lindsay signs back:
It was never really my choice. As a child my parents decided to give me the wonderful benefit of a world of silence. There are times when I wish I could hear…but silence is golden. I have my own little world built up around me…who knows….maybe it includes dragons and other things. The thing about having an implant from my impression of it…is simply they get two worlds. A world silence, or a world of hearing…imagine having that power to turn off the sound. Of course I don’t have that power. I have my solitary confinement, to this splendid silence.

Oh. You all should look at this. A Day in the Life of a Sign Language Interpeter. This is what my interpreter has to deal with.

[Q]Samantha Soren def. Candela Sanchez 6/2, 7/6(3)
Candy was very confident for this one, but Sam has played too many matches - in fact, this is her 6th win in a row.

[2]Giuseppina Benedetti def. Yelena Pirilenko 7/6(3), 6/3
Giusa has won more matches here in Monterrey than all together combined in the rest of her season and is in her first final of 2011.

[2]Giuseppina Benedetti def. [Q]Samantha Soren 4/6, 7/6(3), 7/6(2)
Sam had to win 6 matches just to get here and then nearly knocked off the second seeded Giusa in an epic match. Meanwhile, Giusa snaps out of her horrid streak and hopes to gain some momentum heading into the major events of the next few weeks.

Lindsay and Giusa went from winning nothing to everything - this is now their second event in a row! AND they knock off the top seeds and current Aussie Champs in doing so.

Italy's Giuseppina Benedetti celebrates after winning her first title of 2011 at Monterrey. It was Benedetti's 8th career singles title. She would later capture her 5th career, and 2nd consecutive, doubles title with Lindsay Raymond. The Italian's trip to Mexico looked like it would be a disappointing one after an early exit in singles at the tournment in Acapulco. Giusa managed to find her groove in doubles with Raymond, though, as they took the title and she carried that momentum over to this week. Benedetti will look to chase down the world number two ranking over the next month, before she has a significant amount of points to defend during clay season.
